Description

This is a special Burke & Wills cache listed on Geocaching Australia.

This cache requires you to visit a Burke & Wills historical location and take a photo as described along with your GPS receiver and if possible yourself in the picture. Once you have logged this cache as a find, you are required to load your picture to your log to validate your find.

Validating Your Log
Take a picture of your GPS receiver and if possible yourself in the Flagstaff Gardens and attach it to your online log.

Important Information
The Burke Wills Historical Society notes: "The actual route Burke and Wills followed once they left Camp 78 is unknown and one of the most intensely debated issues. Wills' map and some of his journals containing astronomical observations have been lost. Because the journals have never been transcribed, it means the expedition's track north of the Diamantina, through the gibber rises, confused sand dunes and extensive claypans, is a matter for conjecture."
Travel in Outback Australia can be extremely hazardous. Plan your trip with care and seek and follow local advice on what precautions to take. Be aware of private property restrictions. Do not risk your life to log this geocache.

About This Location
William John Wills, born in Totnes, England, on January 5, 1834, had first been a shepherd when he migrated to Australia in '52, but three years later he began studying surveying and astronomy and moved to Melbourne to work at the magnetic observatory and weather station that was situated here in Flagstaff Gardens until 1863 (interference from the surrounding buildings forced its relocation to the King's Domain). Thus also knowledgeable in meteorology, Wills was named the expedition's third-in-command, showing himself to be a quiet, hard-working individual, and one who always managed a good working relationship with Burke.

The original Flagstaff observatory was founded in 1858 by Georg Balthasar von Neumayer, a Bavarian-born member of the expedition committee who had been Wills' employer. He accompanied the expedition as far as the Darling River, completing his magnetic survey of Victoria. He died in Germany in 1909.

Thanks for sharing this interesting location.
In 'town' for the night after dropping my daughter and her friend @ Rod Laver Arena for a concert. That left me with about 7 - 8 hours to explore the city, grabbing caches, and photos. Geocaching - always a great way to explore areas. It's amazing to see the country in the eyes of a Geocacher and finding things that you may never have discovered if not for them. Not a fan of all the traffic so it's great to be here after the rush hour has died away. Dancing

Appreciate you highlighting this area and bringing me here. Clapping

Beautiful park we had fun Thank you.

20-Nov-18
After checking out of the Motel I had nearly the whole day to do caches around the area before heading out to the airport so decided to walk from the motel into town doing GCA caches along the way.

From this cache I was doing Burke and Wills caches and a couple of history caches as I passed them.

Requested image was taken and attached.

Thanks Geocaching Australia for the cache.

travelled back home to SA from Perth for family reasons and decided that Melbourne is only a short hop from Adelaide, so I logged an attendance at the Parkville Mega event and headed over for 5 days in Melbourne. I hired an E bike and had it for 4 days so was able to get around to many places and grab lots of caches as well as biking from the Youth Hostel in North Melbourne to Parkeville which was only a short ride. I arrived Thursday arvo and headed into the cbd from North Melbourne for a quick look around and then back to the Hostel I was too early to pick up the bike so jumped on a tram and headed to the docklands and grabbed some caches in the area. I can not believe how much the CBD and docklands has changed since we were here about 5 years ago. On my way back to the youth hostel i jumped off the tram a few times to grab some caches including this one. Thanks for the cache Geocaching Australia. Great to see lots of history of Burke and Wills. Clapping

I was walking past on my way down to docklands and decided to complete this b&w cache while here. Great little park

03-Jan-18
Lots of people enjoying the beautiful day in the gardens. A great inner city refuge

29-Dec-17
Caching between showers this afternoon has been great fun!

The view from up here in Flagstaff Hill is blocked by high rise buildings these days, but I can still get glimpses of the far horizon - a very urban horizon mind you- which shows why this spot was once so good for an observatory and a signal station, and why it's not very good for these purposes today.

Chasing down these caches is a great way to learn more about Melbourne.

Today we decided to tick off some B&W virtuals and bag ourselves a Dragon Zone trophy. This was one we snapped and we enjoyed our visit to the various locations. Beautiful gardens in the middle of the city.

Thanks Geocaching Australia.

Arrived in Melbourne a bit earlier today for a weekend get away. rather than sleep I decided to walk a bit. Enjoyed a peaceful walk around the gardens as the damp weather was keeping most others indoor.

Parks when it is getting dark can be scary. When it is fully dark at least you know what you see, but when it is twilight it still can be anything...

23-May-15
On a recent trip to Melbourne we visited Flagstaff Gardens. We wondered how this area got its name... now we know. Fascinating stuff.
Here's a couple of photos of our visit.
Thanks for this cache.

#GA341 - 12:25; Day 2 of my B&W expedition in Melbourne. After eight finds and a single DNF on day 1, there were 12 caches left on the list for today. Taking to the geomobile, after a day on foot yesterday, I'd made it to Moonee Ponds, and was now back in the city via Parkville and Melbourne Cemetery. I made an unsuccessful search for the B&W traditional, only to find when I went to log it that it was archived ages ago (I really must clean up my GSAK lists!). Took a couple of photos in the gardens for this, the last on my list for this trip. TFTC Geocaching Australia Whistle

This was the last location on my private B & W trip around Melbourne. Southern Cross station just down the road, twelve minutes left on the Share bike and sixty minutes before my plane was due to board, I was able to indulge in a few minutes gentle pedalling around the park before a final mad rush.
Thanks for a great series. I had a lot of fun chasing around Melbourne picking these up. Very HappyClan Phoenix

It was great to be at a spot associated with Burke and Wills history. Came out from my hotel on the way to work and snapped away while muggles galore were oblivious.

Heading off to meet some people at a nearby pub, and with a few minutes spare thought I'd enjoy a nice stroll through Flagstaff Gardens. No time for a cache search, so it was nice to at least be able to grab another Burke and Wills cache. Smile
Nice to read the information for the area, having appreciated the beauty of the park.

Nice gardens, we'd just finished a study tour nearby, so I was walking back to my accommodation. The day was so nice, that I might get changed and go back there for a bit of a jog around. Better than the hotel gym. Thanks for the cache.

23-Aug-13
Another Burke & Wills cache knocked off, still so many more to do. Nice and quiet in the gardens today. Thanks!

10-May-13
Knocked off work early so I stopped in the city for a coupe of caches and a stroll around these lovely gardens. I remembered to grab a photo this time for another B&W cache. I love learning about all these locations.

In the city for some b & w virtuals, then the cricket

Out for a Melbourne run, had a plan that lasted till the second cache then it was a matter of simply heading for the next nearest cache I hadn’t found. Eventually this led me here. Took a while to work out how to hold the phone (That I usually use to take photos and as a GPS) in one hand and the Blackberry tablet in the other hand to get all the requirements in the shot while caching alone
Didn’t leave our tag, took nothing but memories and left nothing but footprints (Not that anyone will see them on the footpath).

A nice location to visit.
Thanks for the cache Geocaching Australia.

Killing time while the car is in for a service, so into the city to meet the other half for lunch... and to tackle a few caches (of course).

Having completed the B&W caches at the cemetery last week, it seemed only fitting to add a couple today. This was the first.

30-Aug-12
Nice area. Took a gpsless pic as my phone/camera is my gps. Will upload later.

07-Aug-12
No problem with muggles or high rises interfering with GPS reception on this one. A nice easy find in a very pleasant spot, before heading off to a day of meetings in the city.

Cheers

01-May-12
As I found my self in town for a few hours with nothing critical to do, except geocaching of course, I set out to find few caches. Inner city caching is not really my thing, the the B&W virtuals are ideal and interesting.

I used to work within a hundred metres or so of here, but rarely got out to visit the gardens. Thanks Geocaching Australia.

GCA 339 - 4666. Flew down to Melbourne for a friends party and a long weekend. Today was a good day to walk around the Burke & Wills Trail in the CBD.

Ninth 'find' today in this interesting series - lovely Gardens !

As usual I had planned a night of caching with my good buddy jsmyong55. We had quite a number on the list, and I never thought we would get through them all. We did and then some! The final tally for the night has not yet been realised as there are both Geocaching Australia.com and Geocaching.com caches in the mix, but we both know we both grabbed over 50 caches each. To get jsmoyong55 over the line we detoured from a direct route to his home to get a few more. It was the first time for both of us to get over 50 so we were both pretty pleased with our efforts. This cache was one of those we grabbed. The photo shows the sundial and GPSr.

03-Sep-11
3rd stop on my B&W walk around the Melbourne CDB.

A great day to be out.........exploring???

25-Jul-11
My gps is my phone and camera , so I have no way of proving except taking a photo beside the sundial to prove I was actually there.

18-Jul-11
Thanks for the cache. I enjoyed wandering around these amazing gardens which I had been to but not looked around properly before attempting the caches. I got this cache in the fading daylight and rainy afternoon - hence the half-hidden shot of me behind the raincoat. GPS is in the photo but you can't make out the location. This photo was taken at the plague celebrating the original observatory at Flagstaff as I found this one of the most interesting historical places in this garden.

Nice gardens, and worth the visit, even without the cache to bring me here.
Nearby was a tree that had one of the metal skirts to discourage possums - and sleeping a few feet above it, in the fork of the tree was a possum, so not onlu do they bot look great, but they dont all work (maybe the possums run up the unskirted trees, and then jump across?).
thanks for the history and series.

Last one of the night. Wasn't sure what I was going to be photographing here then I re-read the description. In the back ground there is the shining eyes of a park inhabitant.

23-May-11
Another B&W virtual. GPS playing silly buggers for some reason, it initially thought I was near Hay NSW until I reset it. But this seems to be the right area of the gardens for a photo. Cheers.

Found on the way back to the office this afternoon. My GPS is also my camera, so the exif GPS data will have to do!

15-Feb-11
Was in the park to find all the caches. This is a photo of the kids playground near the QV markets.

16-Dec-10
Found this cache on my first day in melbourne.

25-Nov-10
Second of three successful B&W finds after today's meeting in town. The weather was pretty bleak but I was still able to grab the shot at 17:45.

Thanks again Geocaching Australia.

27-Oct-10
Grabbed this one today while in the Gardens getting the other caches here. I must say the coming to the gardens is value for time - cache wise anyway Very Happy

11-Oct-10
Well, my first GCA cache. Nice afternoon for a stroll around the gardens. I hadn't known about the B&W connection. I'll have to try to find more of the B&W caches in future.

03-Oct-10
Doh - I seem to have missed loading the Flagstaff Hill (and some other GPXfiles) to my GPS so I could only get this virtual cache this time...

28-Sep-10
Went for a cycle around the CBD while in town for work. Thanks for the cache, photo to come when I get to some wifi or get home to my USB cable.

28-Sep-10
A great day to be in the park today. Strolled to gz and snapped away. Very Happy

The deciduous trees in this lovely park are just beginning to show their new leaves. Very historical part of Melbourne. TFTC

16/09/2010 20:43 Found: #27 An easy lunchtime train ride from Parliament station had me in Flagstaff in minutes which is great as there are a surprising number of GCA and GC caches here. Not too hard to collect this one as it is a virtual photo and chose to also take a pic at the monument. Only just realised that there are 2 B&W caches here. Will get the next one tomorrow, weather permitting. TFTC

I found this cache with caughtatwork today while we were hunting down the B&W caches around the city. I loved the gardens today. They were beautiful.

What a beautiful set of gardens. We made our way over to the location indicated by the GPS and took turn taking pictures of each other to claim the find.
It was great day to be out in the gardens with everything so green and the gardens flowering beautifully. A really quality virtual location to come and visit.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks to everyone involved in the B&W Project.

Unfortunately it looked like the nearby B&W Traditional is muggled but at least I got a virtual smiley! Few good caches around this park, both GC and GCA. Cheers from Sydney!

First cache of the day! Is was windy and rainy, but I just had to cache.....

On the day of the Federal Election, along with Robyn of The Morris and Princess Diala, we voted to follow the B & W Party.
At the location of this virtual cache we were able to blend in with the regular tourists and capture a photo of Alice – The Ship of the Desert (SW0228) along with the GPS’r.
It was interesting to contemplate the contrast in scenery and activity 150 years on.

We had a great day wandering around the city completing the B&W caches, both traditional and virtual. Found in the company of Princess Diala, Phetlern and Alice.

I decided a long whilst ago that since I helped place this series, I would not be crazy and hunt for this series on the first day, instead work through the city caches during on the Saturday.

I've now visited this park several times, and now own a Burke and Wills cache here too! Thanks to all involved with getting this series off the ground!

Also, many thanks for the Pheltern and The Morris for the company shared throughout the day.

21-Aug-10
While I was here finding the nearby traditional, I thought it would be a good opportunity to claim the virtual as well - two for the price of one! This photo is taken very close to the physical hide. Now to find the remaining 150-odd caches in the series!

My first B&W cache! Thanks to all those involved in planning this series.

20-Aug-10
Managed to get the morning off so we could do some of these B&W virtuals round the city. A very nice way to spend the morning even if it was quite cold.

20-Aug-10
Visited whilst completing the traditional cache nearby. Back in the late 80's you could stand on the hill in the Gardens and see the bay. I remember a story in one of the newspapers back then, reporting that a building was being completed that would block out the view. Used to work around here back then and spent a lot of time in these gardens. Thanks to everyone involved with the B&W series
