Description

This is a special Burke & Wills cache listed on Geocaching Australia.

This cache requires you to visit a Burke & Wills historical location and take a photo as described along with your GPS receiver and if possible yourself in the picture. Once you have logged this cache as a find, you are required to load your picture to your log to validate your find.

Validating Your Log
Take a picture of your GPS receiver and if possible yourself somewhere along Station Pier and attach it to your online log.

Important Information
The Burke Wills Historical Society notes: "The actual route Burke and Wills followed once they left Camp 78 is unknown and one of the most intensely debated issues. Wills' map and some of his journals containing astronomical observations have been lost. Because the journals have never been transcribed, it means the expedition's track north of the Diamantina, through the gibber rises, confused sand dunes and extensive claypans, is a matter for conjecture."
Travel in Outback Australia can be extremely hazardous. Plan your trip with care and seek and follow local advice on what precautions to take. Be aware of private property restrictions. Do not risk your life to log this geocache.

About This Location
The camels for the VEE came from Karachi (then of course still part of India), arriving here at Hobson's Bay aboard the Chinsurah on June 13, 1860. They were paraded the next day across the Princess Bridge and down Swanston and Bourke Streets toward stables at Parliament House, inevitably creating a sensation at every turn. The man who brought them to Australia, Landells, was subsequently named second-in-command of the VEE.
Some Melbournians had seen camels before, at George Coppin's Cremorne Gardens pleasure park, and the expedition actually purchased 10 of his beasts to supplement those brought from India.

Filling in some spare time logging a few caches. Very Happy

on a windy warm day in Melbourne

21-Sep-19
Over for my yearly visit to Maffra for work. I had some time up my sleeve today before I headed back to Melbourne to get back on the big red bathtub destined for home. Easy find with photo attached.

Tonight we are on the boat traveling back to Tasmania after a week away in the Victorian high country, we grabbed the required photo to be able to make this log. Have been to station pier many times but never ever thought to grab the photo till today. TFTC Clan Cerberus

On our way to Queanbeyan from Tassie, we managed a photo of Station Pier. TFTV

31-Mar-19
We swung by the pier to snap a quick photo. I've been here so many times but never took the photo until now.

24-Jan-19
Arriving at Station Pier on the Spirit of Tasmania made me think how vastly different the scene is today from when Burke and Wills arrived here.
Thanks for this one in the B&W series.

Dropped by during my afternoon walk.
The Spirit of Tasmania I was berthed at Inner East and the Golden Princess was preparing to depart from Outer West.

12-Mar-18
Getting the last of the city B&W virtual caches on a holiday weekend. Took a nice light rail trip to Station Pier

A late start to today's caching adventures, as I had to go to the other end of the train line to reunite short-stuff with her mother before heading to the city. The cluster of GA points of interest at the end of the Port Melbourne line piqued my interest.

With this visit, I think I only have the elusive Queens Park virtual multi left before I will have logged all existing Burke and Wills caches within suburban Melbourne.

Thanks, Geocaching Australia. The pilgrimage continues.

Here we are at Station Pier. No sign of camels, but GZ has a memorial to the ships which brought migrants and unloaded them here between 1922 and 1962.

I love finding such unexpected things while I'm out looking for something else.

I've actually never been to this pier before, so that was cool. It was pretty windy though.

Thank you for the interesting history lesson. Visiting from Perth WA.

19-Jan-17
This is the second B and W cache in add many days. These are rare and I've only ever found one before in Broken Hill but there seems to be lots here in Melbourne.
Photo to come when I get them off my camera.

21-Nov-16
I was filling in time and having fun finding caches, as we waited for the Spirit of Tasmania to take us to Tasmania tonight.

19-Jan-16
My picture was taken as u boarded the spirit. so on the dash is my GPS and the ticket from the exorbitantly expensive parking machine because i was early.

26-Sep-15
Easy find at start of B & W trail

19-Jul-15
Today we leave on the Spirit to return to Tasmania. I was hoping to get a few B&W caches on the mainland as we only have one in Tasmania. However I have left it to our last day here to start on my collection of B&W caches. It looks a great series which I can't wait to earnestly work my way through.

16-Jan-15
#GA331 - 17:55; I was in Melbourne for a few days on the way home after a trip to Tassie. I had picked up my first B&W cache last month while in Melbourne on a Great Aussie Icon Hunt and the opportunity arose to continue with the series. This is the ninth of 18 successful finds over a couple of days, after the first of three DNFs on the nearby traditional. Another visit to a familar area, having caught the ferry here a few times over the years to head south. A large cruise ship, the Celebrity Solstice was in port along with the Spirit of Tasmania II. 29-Oct-14
We've been to a few B&W spots in our travels - the dig tree, grave sites at Innamincka etc. But that was in years BC. Good to get this one. In fact, great as the ship in which Mr Tardis & family emigrated to Australia many many years ago (BC), the "Fairsky" got a mention! How good is that?

04-Aug-14
Coming into Melbourne on the Spirit at Station Pier

15-Apr-14
A quick visit on the wart home from work.
Thanks Geocaching Australia for the cache and the history.

11-Feb-14
Took a ride down to the beach after work hoping to spot the new LHD sitting on the back of the Blue Marlin, but alas I couldn't spot it.
Checked the GPSr and decided to at least knock this one off in my work clothes.
Took a picture of "Destination" as it seemed appropriate for Burke and Wills, before going for a ride over to Princes Pier. Wow Princes pier is a beautiful spot - just a pity that a terrain 5 cache sits there rather than one that will take more cachers to the area.

Cheers

19-Oct-13
Whilst out for a ride, decided to extend the ride to include a bit of the bayside and pick up this cache. TFTC.

05-Aug-12
We were invited to visit the HMAS Tobruk today. A truly memorable afternoon. A guided tour of the ship with family and friends.

I remembered that there was virtual here from the B&W series, so am posting a few pics of the visit.

Cheers gordo

While waiting to board the spirit I remembered that there was a b&w virtual here! Bonus!

Photo to follow when I get home

23-Jun-12
After a flop at finding the traditional B&W cache nearby I kept going to grab a quick snap of the Pier and Spirit of Tasmania that was in dock. The pier itself seems off limits to non-travellers so I settled for a shot from on the end of the pier outside the security zone (taken with my GPS - see EXIF data for confirmation if needs be). Parking here is obscenely expensive and the ticket machine ripped me off too (no ticket) - I shouldn't have bothered doing the right thing... TFTC

14-Apr-12
Wait a bit for full log and photos please

16-Mar-12
An easy find while we were waiting to board Spirit of Tasmania II to go home at the end of our mini caching road trip.

04-Dec-11
Finally I am finding the closest caches to home. Although I've been here so many times it's a nice spot worth coming back to. Thanks for the cycle ride in the evening.

03-Sep-11
Caught the tram down fo the two B&W caches at Station Pier. With the Spirit of Tassie in, it was a busy palce today.

Thanks for the another in the series.

01-Sep-11
Came here after work. The ship, Spirit of Tasmania was in dock too which was perfect. My phone acts as my camera and gps, so I can't take a photo of it. I did however 'touch' the station pier.

28-Jul-11
A nice sunny day for a tram ride down to the pier. The 109 Tram dropped me off right at the pier entrance. I had been down here early for leading lights but had missed the fact this was here as well. TFTV

I haven’t had a Monday night cache run for a couple of weeks so I was pretty eager at work to get going after knock off time. I initially headed west to the coast but after an early and unsuccessful start I moved into the city precinct where I knew I could bag a few finds to push me towards the 800 finds mark. I spent most of the night running between caches so I’m pretty tired, but I’m sure I have over the 800 now. This was one of the caches grabbed tonight, and although it was raining I’m sure I got about a strike rate of 90%.
I have provided the photo in the wrong area - see GA2494

13-Jun-11
See Code1 below who has provided the photo. An interesting area that we seemed to of spent a fair bit of time just watching the world go by.
JABs.

13-Jun-11
Picked up the Traditional nearby before venturing up to snap JABs pic at the virtual cache while waiting to get on the ferry to go across the creek.
Lots of people about on this public holiday.

26-Mar-11
An easy cache to fill in time waiting to catch the boat home to Tassie.

03-Jan-11
How easy is this one whie waiting for the spirit to dock

02-Jan-11
I chose a busy time to get here today with the Spirit of Tas docking

22-Dec-10
Visited Station Pier this morning. On my way to Geelong to do some caching today with draw four.

11-Dec-10
How easy was this virtual when you are killing time waiting to get on the Spirit. Thanks.

30-Oct-10
As we were dropping a French travelling mate (Mathieu who we hope will join the GC fun soon) off to Station Pier last night, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to find the 2 B&W caches (and our first B&W finds also) despite the intermittent heavy rain attempting to thwart our effort!

TFTC & hopefully many more B&W finds to come Smile

28-Sep-10
We dropped by to do this one at 12:20, and its neighbour, while on a round-a-bout way to the show. Another find in this wonderful series that is giving me itchier feet the more of them that I do Wink.

Took pickie, left. Thanks Geocaching Australia.

27-Sep-10
Found 9.10am
Spent the morning round the city picking up a few B&W caches, this was the first.

18-Sep-10
Vastly different view to when Burke and Wills' camels arrived.

14-Sep-10
Found @ 0630Hrs
Found last night but the camara did not want to take a decent photo so on my way to work i had some time up my sleve so it was time to get the required photo.
Then head to work.
There was cars were still comming out so i could not get as close as i would like to have but it was still good to see the boat up close again.

27-Aug-10
Still a little dark when I arrived at GZ,and the Nokia takes HORRIBLE pics in the best of daylight.
See attached for my visit to this wonderful Station Pier.
What was it like here 150 years ago?

24-Aug-10
Pleased to say this was my second B&W cache. It was pouring rain and the cars were heading onto the ferry so I did'nt get to far out.
TFTC Very Happy

23-Aug-10
Visited in morning at around 8.10am. Nice sunny morning in Melbourne. Thanks everyone for this series. I can just imagine the commotion the camels would have caused as they were being unloaded.

22-Aug-10
Another one where we were collecting the physical cache, so couldn't miss the opportunity for the virtual, too. We strolled down the pier and up into the departure/arrival hall. Couldn't quite get onto the boat to get the "SPOT" virtual cache, but managed to get a photo to allow us to claim this virtual instead. No sign of camels around here today!

21-Aug-10
14:20
On the day of the Federal Election, along with Robyn of The Morris and Princess Diala, we voted to follow the B & W Party.
At the location of this virtual cache we were able to blend in with the regular tourists and capture a photo of Alice – The Ship of the Desert (SW0228) along with the GPS’r.
It was interesting to contemplate the contrast in scenery and activity 150 years on.

TFTH.

21-Aug-10
We had a great day wandering around the city completing the B&W caches, both traditional and virtual. Found in the company of Princess Diala, Phetlern and Alice.

21-Aug-10
I decided a long whilst ago that since I helped place this series, I would not be crazy and hunt for this series on the first day, instead work through the city caches during on the Saturday.

Back tracked south to visit this pier. How fascinating would it have been to sight unknown animals!

Many thanks for the Pheltern and The Morris for the company shared throughout the day.

21-Aug-10
Found by The Empire @ 11:50am
Short walk and the pic was taken. Thanks to all those involved in the series.

20-Aug-10
W00t! I found it Smile
The first of the Burke and Wills virtual caches that will keep me busy as I get around town.
The cold weather didn't slow me down at this cache location and I was able to find a car park quite close to the pier entrance. Bit tricky with the one handed photo and GPS, but I think you can appreciate my ugly mug, GPS and Station Pier all in one.
No camels in sight today Mr. Green
Thanks to all who were involved in the B&W Project.
