Description
Byron Bay Dwarf Graminoid Clay Heath
The Byron Bay Dwarf Graminoid Clay Heath is the accepted name for the plant community that is found on gently sloping clay ridges of low relief, within the Byron Bay Council area. It's a mixture of woody and grassy species that and only 5ha of this ecosystem are left in the Byron Council Area. This type of ecosystem is quite rare and there a plants here that have only been found in Byron Bay and the Tweed area. To ensure the ecostystem survives, the area has to be burnt occasionally, which promotes seed germination. Tall trees, even natives, have been cut down or poisoned as they threatened to take over the area.
The view from GZ is quite good too. You look down the heath onto the busy little township of Byron Bay. The views extend over Arakwal National Park and out to the sea. One of the best vantage points in town.
There's an information board at GZ, you can find the cache by standing here. No bush bashing required. There's no need to walk though the heath to find this stash.

Niely hidden and still in place. Cache and contents were in excellent condition.
Many thanks MattyRx for placing this cache and adding to our geocaching experience today.
So it was off to Uncle Toms for some sustenance. I was still too tired to drive home so I pulled in at Byron. Besides I wanted to check out the new road and old water tower. I ended up sitting in my car for ages resting and listening to an audio book and before I knew it the sun was going down. I headed up to this cache and found it was at a very popular place to watch the sun set. There were people sprinkled all over the place sitting and standing amongst the heath and whatnot from this hilltop right over to water tower. I couldn't see beyond that but no doubt they were there too. It really was a spectacular view watching the sun slip down behind the mountains and the change in colour and shade of the land and sky within minutes.
Thankfully the folk standing at GZ left just after the sun set and I was close enough to claim the space next. It's funny how the groups of people stayed a fair distance apart and this worked in my favour. I had the space to myself and everyone was looking out over the horizon or chatting with each other leaving me to find the cache. I started out looking with my feet and hit someone quite solid. Turned out to be a huge crystal rock that was probably placed there as a forcefield blocking the 5G over Byron so as to keep Covid away from it. I thought I'd better leave it there just in case that was the case. Hahaha. No, seriously, I wasn't sure if the person who placed it might be nearby and might get upset. I've heard some people around these parts are very set on crystals being placed in certain spots and giving out good vibes or power or something so thought it best to leave it.
I broadened my search according to the hint and still came out empty handed. I was determined not to walk away without it so broadened the search again and discovered that left wasn't really left, but right. Hahaha. Signing duties were done, photos were taken, and then it was time for the long drive home... well it felt long anyway. I almost turned off at Ross Lane out of old habit. Haha.
Thanks for the cache and bringing me to the views.
