Description

This is a special Burke & Wills cache listed on Geocaching Australia.

This cache requires you to visit a Burke & Wills historical location and take a photo as described along with your GPS receiver and if possible yourself in the picture. Once you have logged this cache as a find, you are required to load your picture to your log to validate your find.

Validating Your Log
Take a picture of your GPS receiver and if possible yourself in front of the tram building and attach it to your online log.

Important Information
The Burke Wills Historical Society notes: "The actual route Burke and Wills followed once they left Camp 78 is unknown and one of the most intensely debated issues. Wills' map and some of his journals containing astronomical observations have been lost. Because the journals have never been transcribed, it means the expedition's track north of the Diamantina, through the gibber rises, confused sand dunes and extensive claypans, is a matter for conjecture."
Travel in Outback Australia can be extremely hazardous. Plan your trip with care and seek and follow local advice on what precautions to take. Be aware of private property restrictions. Do not risk your life to log this geocache.

About This Location
Burke fired another assistant for being "a little too hilarious through excess of beer", but hired three more men on the spot.
Then, to the roars of some 15,000 citizens and a brass band playing "Cheer, Boys, Cheer", the party marched north in the direction of the Sarah Sands Hotel, turned, traversed whole length of the park again and headed out the South Gate onto Flemington Road, thence to Mount Alexander Road and out of town. One wagon broke down before it had even left the park.

An amazing part of history.
Thanks for sharing this interesting location. Dancing
Dropping someone off at the Women’s Hospital, I took a stroll whilst I waited seeing the sights, the amazing colours, the natural beauty. The geocaches are a great bonus of my day out.

After checking out of the Motel I had nearly the whole day to do caches around the area before heading out to the airport so decided to walk from the motel into town doing GCA caches along the way.

From this cache I was doing Burke and Wills caches and a couple of history caches as I passed them.

Requested image was taken and attached.

Thanks Geocaching Australia for the cache.

I traveled back home to SA from Perth for family reasons and decided that Melbourne is only a short hop from Adelaide, so I logged an attendance at the Parkville Mega event and headed over for 5 days in Melbourne. I hired an E bike and had it for 4 days so was able to get around to many places and grab lots of caches as well as biking from the Youth Hostel in North Melbourne to Parkeville which was only a short ride. After checking into the hostel on Thursday i jumped on a tram and headed down to the markets and then jumped off and went for a stroll through a park nearby for another cache. On the tuesday after the event I rode all around the cbd getting caches and was passing through here to go to some other caches so i stopped by here to have a look and and grab some photos so i could log the cache. The things you see when riding a bike....much better than having a car. Thanks for the cache Geocaching Australia. still trying to log all my finds from the event.... Clapping

Today we decided to tick off some B&W virtuals and bag ourselves a Dragon Zone trophy. This was one we snapped and we enjoyed our visit to the various locations.

Thanks Geocaching Australia.

#GA333 - 07:45; Day 2 of my B&W expedition in Melbourne. After eight finds and a single DNF on day 1, there were 12 caches left on the list for today. Taking to the geomobile, after a day on foot yesterday, this was the second stop as I headed out towards Flemington and Moonee Ponds for a couple of those outside the inner city precinct. Parked the geomobile and haeded across this busy road at the lights. The traffic was building as people headed into the city. TFTC Geocaching Australia Very Happy

I've been meaning to stop here for ages but I always forget til I've gone past. Today I remembered and parked quite a long way up the road before making my way to gz.
Thanks Geocaching Australia. I love reading the history on there.

Used to travel on this line to and from school. This stop (it used to be an actual stop) was particularly notable because it is where the St Als girls would pile on.
Thanks for the cache and the series.

If I've gotta go out in the wet wintry night to send a travelling cache on its way, I may as well make it worth my while. A few more B&W hides not too far from home fit the bill quite nicely.

Thankfully, the rain had petered out, so I could get the necessary photos without a drenching. This was my last stop... I guess I did these bass-ackwards tonight, starting at the aftermath and finishing near the beginning.

Found this cache while in the area looking for a few more caches.
I can remember using this tram stop occasionally on the way to/from school. What memories it brings back!
Used as a meeting place for the girls at the local girls high school and had many of "pash" in the area as well!!!

Another B&W virtual. We actually walked past it last night looking for dinner without realising it. Came back today but there doesn't seem much to see here these days, so got a picture of me next to the Royal Park sign. Cheers.

13-Feb-12
Took my life in my hands crossing the tram tracks from Royal Park, as the Childrens Hospital construction site has blocked off the walking path.

Out on a legendary cache run with caching buddy Trailrunning. For the first time, we actually completed the whole list and added a few more on the way home to meet the 50-find cache mark. Started early at 5.45pm all the way till 2am before we went home tired, but happy. 2 DNF's along the way but an awesome run all the same.

Grabbed this one on the way to the other nearby caches. It was dark and with poor lighting conditions, the photo isn't very clear. Hopefully its good and clear enough. TFTC Smile

As usual I had planned a night of caching with my good buddy jsmyong55. We had quite a number on the list, and I never thought we would get through them all. We did and then some! The final tally for the night has not yet been realised as there are both Geocaching Australia.com and Geocaching.com caches in the mix, but we both know we both grabbed over 50 caches each. To get jsmoyong55 over the line we detoured from a direct route to his home to get a few more. It was the first time for both of us to get over 50 so we were both pretty pleased with our efforts. This virtual was one of those we grabbed. The photo is of poor quality due to the light, but is can be seen in the distance.

Next stop as I worked my away around the B&W series. Actually grabbed a tram to this one. Once at GZ, photo was taken and it was then a walk off towards the next one.

Thanks for the series.

02/03/2011 19:59 Found: #298 After an ACS (Australian Computer Society) meeting I made the short walk to the # 59 tram then on to this virtual cache. Checking the database I see I am close-ish to another B&W. Hmm yes! lets go for a walk. TFTC TNLN SL

With a meeting less then a few hundred metres away tonight, I thought I might try for this one before heading home. In the very heavy gloom, it turned to be just as much a learning experience on how to lengthen the exposure times on the camera Shocked. Eventually though, I reckon I got a suitable shot at 20:20.

I couldn't help wondering as I finally got an acceptable pickie if they left this very spot in these light conditions on 20 August, 150 years ago!

Took pickies, L. Thanks for yet another informative instalment in this sensational series Geocaching Australia Very Happy .

We're on our way now. Not quite by the same method as B&W. I think we might be travelling in a little more luxury than along on camel back. A few quick snappy pictures from GabGab and I and we were off to the other side of this gorgeous park to find another sweet set of B&W caches.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks to everyone involved in the B&W Project.

This was the closest cache to my hostel for this stay in Melbourne. Used it as a starting point this afternoon for a wander to grab some B&W and other caches on the north side of the river. Cheers from Sydney

"One wagon broke down before it had even left the park" - alot like some of the trams you catch these days Wink I've waited here for a tram about a billion times, sorry for the photo quality but all I have is a really old phone.

No Camel tracks around here these days! Difficult place to find a car park, but we managed today. Cheers!

On the day of the Federal Election, along with Robyn of The Morris and Princess Diala, we voted to follow the B & W Party.
At the location of this virtual cache we were able to blend in with the regular tourists and capture a photo of Alice – The Ship of the Desert (SW0228) along with the GPS’r.
It was interesting to contemplate the contrast in scenery and activity 150 years on.
And so we must be on our way as well. With inclement weather closing in, we decided to call it a day, dropping the Princess at the station and then heading for Bendigo.

We had a great day wandering around the city completing the B&W caches, both traditional and virtual. Found in the company of Princess Diala, Phetlern and Alice.

This was the last for the day

I decided a long whilst ago that since I helped place this series, I would not be crazy and hunt for this series on the first day, instead work through the city caches during on the Saturday.

Interesting building to take a picture of in relation to the Burke and Wills series. I'm sure they would have loved a tram to cart all their stuff instead of the camels.

You can't get trams though...

Many thanks for the Pheltern and The Morris for the company shared throughout the day.

(Will upload photo once I get the camera cable I ordered, lost my other one).

20-Aug-10
So am I to assume that B&W took the tram from here? Very Happy
Must have, it is certainly a bugger of a place to park your wagon!
Thanks, Robmc.
