Description

This is a special Burke & Wills cache listed on Geocaching Australia.

This cache requires you to visit a Burke & Wills historical location and take a photo as described along with your GPS receiver and if possible yourself in the picture. Once you have logged this cache as a find, you are required to load your picture to your log to validate your find.

Validating Your Log
Take a picture of your GPS receiver and if possible yourself in front of the lake and attach it to your online log.

Important Information
The Burke Wills Historical Society notes: "The actual route Burke and Wills followed once they left Camp 78 is unknown and one of the most intensely debated issues. Wills' map and some of his journals containing astronomical observations have been lost. Because the journals have never been transcribed, it means the expedition's track north of the Diamantina, through the gibber rises, confused sand dunes and extensive claypans, is a matter for conjecture."
Travel in Outback Australia can be extremely hazardous. Plan your trip with care and seek and follow local advice on what precautions to take. Be aware of private property restrictions. Do not risk your life to log this geocache.

About This Location
By midnight of the first cold, wet day of the expedition, August 20, 1860, the half-kilometre caravan had only covered a few times its own length, reaching Essendon on the edge of Melbourne. Here two more wagons broke down, so the party set up camp at the town of Moonee Ponds, in what is now Queen's Park.
Moonee Ponds and the municipality of Moonee Valley tend to be more famous today because the comedian Barry Humphries claims his alter ego, Dame Edna Everage, hails from here, but the locals shrug off his derision and take pride in their hometown's cosmopolitanism - more than a third of the population of 110,000 were born overseas - its Maribyrnong Riverside park and, of course, its historic Queen's Park.

I was helping with a children's holiday program at The Clocktower Centre today so in my lunchbreak I went for a walk and completed this cache.

Had lunch in the park today and after a lap of the lake arrived here.
Cheers

on the way to the airport we decided we had enough time for a detour to knock off this Burke and Wills and start the other one here. Still plenty of time for a pint at the airport. TFTC

11-Feb-18
A nice inner city park. hard to comprehend how much trouble the expedition had just getting here

01-Jan-18
Visited Queen's Park with a friend this afternoon and grabbed this cache.

Sadly not enough time to do the other one too, but hey, that means I've got a good reason to come back.

TFTC GCA.

Today we decided to tick off some B&W virtuals and bag ourselves a Dragon Zone trophy. This was one we snapped and we enjoyed our visit to the various locations.

Thanks Geocaching Australia.

great park. Took plenty of photos.

This looks like quite an interesting series - I will have to get a few more of these while I am in Melbourne. Out swimming at pool with my daughter when I realised I was very close to this lake

#GA335 - 08:30; Day 2 of my B&W expedition in Melbourne. After eight finds and a single DNF on day 1, there were 12 caches left on the list for today. Taking to the geomobile, after a day on foot yesterday, this was the first stop as I headed out towards Flemington and Moonee Ponds for a couple of those outside the inner city precinct. I'd made it to Moonee Ponds after a few stops along the way. Parked the geomobile and headed into the park to have a wander around. Gathered some information for the other B&W cache as well as collecting a couple of GC caches as well while I was here. TFTC Geocaching Australia Very Happy

A nice easy grab and a gorgeous park. Thanks for bringing us here Smile

26-Oct-13
Found today after enjoying a picnic lunch beside the lake. We took some B&W-style supplies of corned beef and lime juice (as well as beef jerky/dried beef and dried fruits). A fun day following some of the trail.

Quite a few small ducklings to admire, too!

Beautiful park here.
Take my time to walk around lake and had cuppa at the cafe here.
Great park and interesting to know about Burke & Wills history here.
Thanks Clapping

AS a previous log states, is a bit tricky to sometimes meet requirements to log a cache. I drive by here quite often lately, so remembered to load some GCA caches into geosphere and fire it up on the ipad. You can just make out I am about 3m from GZ. Couldn't get any closer, a council vehicle was parked right on it...

This is my first GCA cache find in over a year, had a big dry spell, time to start logging them.

Cheers Gordo

My phone is my GPS and camera, so I took a photo of my transport instead.

27-Nov-11
In Melbourne for long weekend break and headed out to grab the 2 B&W caches around here.

This was quick and easy and appreciated. Good to see and learn a little more about the trek. Photo attached.

Thanks for the cache...

Great Spring day to be out and about caching.
I have driven past this park on numerous occasions but have never stopped and visited it.
Great place to unwind for a few hours. Very busy day at the park with loads of families, kids, dogs, sports balls etc.. in every direction.

Out on a legendary cache run with caching buddy Trailrunning. For the first time, we actually completed the whole list and added a few more on the way home to meet the 50-find cache mark. Started early at 5.45pm all the way till 2am before we went home tired, but happy. 2 DNF's along the way but an awesome run all the same.

Grabbed this one on the way to the other nearby caches. It was dark and with poor lighting conditions, the photo isn't very clear. Hopefully its good and clear enough. TFTC Smile

As usual I had planned a night of caching with my good buddy jsmyong55. We had quite a number on the list, and I never thought we would get through them all. We did and then some! The final tally for the night has not yet been realised as there are both Geocaching Australia.com and Geocaching.com caches in the mix, but we both know we both grabbed over 50 caches each. To get jsmoyong55 over the line we detoured from a direct route to his home to get a few more. It was the first time for both of us to get over 50 so we were both pretty pleased with our efforts. This cache was one of those we grabbed. The picture is not great due to the light, but the lake is visble in the background.

Took my Geomate for walk in this park. Nice water fountains. T4TC.

256. Decided to try and knock a couple more of these off while in the general area. Didn't have time to do the Multi but managed to grab the shot in the home of the housewife superstar and while some workers watched on.

Being here at 07:05am not many souls around and an easy 'Log' for the cache. (setting the camera and trying different poses.
The new board-walk should look great when finished.

I dropped by here at 15:30 on a glorious Saturday afternoon. Yet another enthralling and informative instalment in this wonderful series Very Happy.

Took pickie, L. Thanks once again Geocaching Australia.

A few months ago we didn't manage to get this far up to log a find on these caches, but this Tuesday public holiday was the time to do it!

We managed to snap a shot in front of the pergola over the water.
I've never been to this park before, I think it will be good once they finish the boardwalk on the southside of the lake.

(Photo will be uploaded at a later date, I have noted it first)

A very busy place on a sunny spring day! TFTC

Lots of people enjoying the lovely location here and I was one of these. Very Happy

20-Sep-10
Night time was approaching very quickly as we arrived at GZ - something like B&W arriving to camp for the night.

15-Sep-10
Was in the area today so completed both here in Queens Park. Have been past here many times but have never taken the time to stop here and stroll around. Nice place in a busy area. Very Happy

12-Sep-10
I found this cache with caughtatwork today while we were hunting down the B&W caches around the city. I loved the ducks on the water today. It was cold but fun here.

The second last of the day. We were starting to run late, but we decided to make the effort to collect these, the last couple of B&W caches on the way home.
The lake was quite full, both of water a water birds. We were disappointed we didn't bring anything for them to eat.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks to everyone involved in the B&W Project.

RDO...had to do something down town so happened to be here for lunch.
Couldn't get a decent photo. To much contrast between ground and sky.
So you will have to make do with my one handed photographic achievements. The fountains are good.

BTW, lots of construction happening around one end of the lake.

Continuing in our quest to follow B&W. We were impressed by the park and happened to be there when the fountain erupted! Lots of construction work being undertaken in the area.

The young daughter and I had time on our hands today so we decided to make our way to this great park and tick off a couple more B&W caches.
After observing the ducks and stopping at the playground we made our way to GZ to take the required photo at 11:45 am.
Thanks for another interesting caching experience.

After finding the codeword cache I took the required pic of the ponds and continued to the next B&W cache.

A belated log, a bit slack with getting photos out of the phone.... Continued the walk around the lake to pick this one up - quite a bit of construction was going on nearby at the time. Thanks.

22-Aug-10
I know this area very well, having lived nearby for many years, hence I got the job of hiding the nearby B&W codeword cache. Today was my chance to grab this virtual to cross it off my list. A crisp, clear and sunny morning.

22-Aug-10
Had a great walk round the lake this morning as it slowly warmed up. Had the photo taken and also picked up the nearby code B&W.

21-Aug-10
Came to grab this one and the codeword cache with the 3yo. Unfortunately, I looked at the wrong tag for the codeword, but I'll be back!

Photo is a bit dark, but is the 3yo in front of lake. My iphone is both camera and gps so couldn't get it in the photo.

20-Aug-10
I looked and looked and looked and looked, but not a camel could I see.
Lots of muggles enjoying the stroll around the lake though.
Thanks, Robmc.
