Description
Eucalyptus rubida (Candle Bark)
During the pastoral phase of this area, this tree was used as a boundary marker between the two properties that existed prior to the development of ANU (Springbank and Canberry).
The remains of this tree represent the tree cover that once dominated this site prior to European settlement.
In the 1830s, Springbank stretched from the Mologolo River to Black Mountain to what is now the ANU and was the home to John and Helen MacPherson - the first European family to live in Canberra.
They built a homestead on what is now known as Springbank Island.
They and then the Kaye family lived on the property right up until the site was cleared to create Lake Burley Griffin.
To qualify for this find, you must take a photo of yourself with the tree or a photo of the plaque with your foot to show evidence of your visit.
Please include this photo with your log - finds without a photo will be deleted.
