Description

This is a special Burke & Wills cache listed on Geocaching Australia.

This cache requires you to visit a Burke & Wills historical location and take a photo as described along with your GPS receiver and if possible yourself in the picture. Once you have logged this cache as a find, you are required to load your picture to your log to validate your find.

Validating Your Log
Take a picture of your GPS receiver showing the same co-ordinates as the cache page (plus or minus 100 meters) and attach it to your online log.

Important Information
The Burke Wills Historical Society notes: "The actual route Burke and Wills followed once they left Camp 78 is unknown and one of the most intensely debated issues. Wills' map and some of his journals containing astronomical observations have been lost. Because the journals have never been transcribed, it means the expedition's track north of the Diamantina, through the gibber rises, confused sand dunes and extensive claypans, is a matter for conjecture."
Travel in Outback Australia can be extremely hazardous. Plan your trip with care and seek and follow local advice on what precautions to take. Be aware of private property restrictions. Do not risk your life to log this geocache.

About This Location
Dost Mahomet, Burke and Wills' Afghan camel driver, chose to settle in Menindee. He'd lost an arm following a run-in with a camel, but found work in the bakery of William Ah Chung, which is today an art gallery on Menindee Street. In the aftermath of the expedition, when accounts were being settled back in Melbourne, Mahomet's formal request to be paid at the full rate of his European colleagues - £10 a month - was rejected. Mahomet died some years later; his grave is just outside town.

Doing a day trip from Broken Hill, it’s been a long time since I have been to Menindee so great chance to re-visit and get some caches too. I don’t use a gps much these days so am attaching a photo at or near to GZ with my Fitbit watch. Very interesting historic site. TFTC

Staying at Broken Hill for a couple of days we decided to explore Menindee and surrounds. As it turns out this area is a hot spot for Burke and Wills virtuals and traditionals.

Central Australia trip Crossing the Simpson and Innaminka, August 2014. Some of the story about this mission is well known, but there are so many details that are not and add so much to the story. Thanks.

31-Mar-13
I don't think I have done many B&W caches so good to get two here close together! Thank you.

06-Jun-11
A lovely memorial to a person who dedicated a significant part of their life to exploring our country.

28-Mar-11
Grabbed this one after visiting grave memorial cache nearby.
On our B&W jouney from Broken Hill to Victorian border.
Would not recommend GZ for photos with geokids as is between white post and white line - not a safe place to be with speed limit at 110 km. At least this one is accessible today, unlike several other virtuals in this area.
