Description

Captain Charles Sturt's Boat

Sturt wanted to settle the debate as to whether there was an inland sea and he was driven to be the first European to stand in the centre of the continent. In August 1844 Sturt and a party of 15 men, 200 sheep, six drays and a boat set out to explore north-western New South Wales and to advance into central Australia.

His party consisted of James Poole, Dr J Harris Browne, John McDouall Stuart, Louis Piesse, Daniel Brock, George Davenport, Joseph Cowley, Robert Flood, D Morgan, J Jones, Turpin, W Lewis, H Foulkes, J Mack, J Kirby, and R Sullivan.  Equipment included a boat for travelling on the inland sea that Sturt still hoped to find, and a flock of 200 sheep - meat on the hoof.  Edward Eyre accompanied them in the early stages of their journey.

They travelled along the Murray River and Darling River before passing the future site of Broken Hill, but were then stranded for months by the extreme summer conditions  at Depot Glen, near the present site of Milparinka.

They went as far north as Fort Grey (on the NSW QLD Border) and explored the area for a while, then returned to Adelaide. The whale-boat was finally abandoned at Depot Glen - there had been no inland sea for it to sail on.  Instead it was floated on the creek.

There is a replica of Sturt's whaleboat in Tibooburra Pioneer Park.

To log this cache simply take a photo of yourself and your GPS with the boat and post it with your log.

Visited at night (that's the only time I had available), but still an unusual sight.

Got the photo, It makes one question why this heavy boat was not abandoned a lot sooner.

We have been through Tibooburra a number of times. I was looking to see what photos we had taken of the Ship of the Desert. The most memorable time was with viaggio0001. We came across to Tibooburra from Wanaaring. After we left Wanaaring it started to sprinkle. Half way there the rain started! As we slid into Tibooburra we heard the road from Wanaaring had closed some time after we had left. We thought we might have needed "The Ship of the Desert" that trip. The next morning we woke to a dry day and the roads had reopened. Took the attached photo before we left Tibooburra. However worse was to come... That day a massive dust storm came from SA and we were camped at Sturt NP when it blew through!!! Thanks for the Virtual.

On the way south we stopped the night in Tobboburra. How could I visit here and not grab an image of this iconic boat. A pity it was not needed. Thanks

well i'm not sure if this quite meets the requirements for this cache, however i think the cache owners will possibly attest to my being at the location as they were standing beside me when i took the photo.
amazingly it was bout 7:30 at night, but the cameras compenstation made the image look like it was day time...
thanks for the cache.

I still worry about the guys who dragged a boat all the way out here!, there isn't any water for hundreds of miles deep enough to float it in.!
