Description

Burke and Wills 150th Anniversary Cache

Important Information
The "Cooper Creek" cache is located in Outback Australia and travel in this area can be extremely hazardous. Plan your trip with care and seek and follow local advice on what precautions to take. Do not risk your life to log this geocache.

Burke and Wills Expedition
In 1860-61 Robert O'Hara Burke and William John Wills led an expedition of 19 men with the intention of crossing Australia from Melbourne in the south to the Gulf of Carpentaria in the north, a distance of around 3,250 kilometres (2,000 miles). At that time most of the inland of Australia had not been explored by non-indigenous people and was completely unknown to the European settlers.

The south-north leg was successfully completed (except they were stopped by swampland 5 kilometres (3 miles) from the northern coastline) but owing to poor leadership and bad luck, both of the expedition's leaders died on the return journey. Altogether, seven men lost their lives, and only one man, John King, travelled the entire expedition and returned alive to Melbourne.

The area

Cooper Creek is the area that the Victorian Exploration Expedition spent a great deal of time. Some from the party spend four months on the banks of Cooper Creek, at the Dig Tree.

Burke, Wills and King decided to follow Cooper Creek to Strzelecki Creek and then to the cattle station at Mt Hopeless. Unfortunately they did not get to Mt Hopeless. They were unable to leave the Cooper Creek area as they were unable to carry sufficient water after the loss of their last two camels.

Both Burke and Wills died, and were originally buried on the banks of Cooper Creek, there are monuments at both, and King was rescued along the banks of Cooper Creek also.

The cache

The cache is an ammo tin located near Cullyamurra Waterhole.

On our trip from Birdsville to Broken Hill with our caravan on tow.

The track was very rocky and bumpy after having had so much Big Red Bash traffic. We parked the caravan on Innamincka Town common
then headed out to explore to find these caches. That is after realising how we had misloaded the GPSr and didnt have any caches at
the dig tree. Brick Wall

Great to now be finding some caches and exploring the history of the area. Clapping

Did a little maintenance here to hopefully keep
the integrity of the cache.

Tassie Trekkers

Whilst staying at Innamincka and following in the footsteps of Burke & Wills this was one of the B&W caches we found. Cache and contents are in excellent condition however it was difficult to extract the inner container but managed to sign the log and return as found.

WOW! Tree must've grown since this cache was placed. Couldn't get the box out but just managed to lift the inside container out of ammo box. So glad we got to sign this log. The inner cache is in perfect condition.
Someone found this cache by accident in 2015 and left a note. Lid of ammo tin has been broken off and is now just sitting on top to keep the crawlies out.
Wonder if we'll be the last to sign this log? This was a real challenge to work out how to extract the inner box. Loved it.

Little Ravens

Tree has grown some more but eventually managed to extract the container inside the ammo can. A great place to camp for a couple of nights - wish I'd brought a canoe. Can't believe this one hasn't been found for so long. It's still in excellent condition. Made a couple of swaps before heading off towards Burke's grave.

Posspet Boys

We camped nearby under a coolibah tree and read "The Dig Tree" at the time. What a beautiful part of the world and both easy and hard to imagine what happened around here.
The tree that the cache is in has grown since being placed I think and I had to open it within the cavity. No way would it come out.
