Description
The Tenterfield Saddler
"Time is a Traveller, Tenterfield Saddler turn your head. Right again Jackaroo, think I see a kangaroo up ahead..."
Tenterfield NSW is a town steeped in history. On the 24th October 1889, Sir Henry Parkes gave his famous Federation Speech in this town, and it is often referred to as the Birthplace of the Nation. How shocked and appalled I was to find there was not a single cache hidden in town! While many may be unaware this is where the Federation Movement really began to gather steam, those same folk may have heard of a tune called "Tenterfield Saddler" by the Boy from Oz, Peter Allen.
Peter Allen was born and raised in Tenterfield and the song he wrote is about his Grandfather, George Woolnough, who worked in the Saddlery from 1908 to 1960. These days the Saddlery is National Trust Listed and is a Museum / Shop of a bygone era. On November 26, 2005 an extension of the Tenterfield library was opened and named the "George Woolnough Wing".
Sir Stuart Alexander Donaldson purchased the land in 1858. He later went on to be the First Premier of NSW. The Saddlery itself was built in 1870 out of local hand-cut bluestone and during its life served as a bank, a private home, and then reverted to a Saddlery in 1897 as it stands to this day.
"Time is a Tale Teller, Tenterfield Saddler make a bet. Fly away Cockatoo, down on the ground Emu up ahead."
Unfortunately being a Sydney Boy I couldn't maintain a physical cache this far from home, so a Virtual will have to suffice and hopefully encourage local cachers to populate this historic town in a few more real ones!
June 2018 Update - It completely slipped my mind that when History caches were introduced this would be a perfect candidate. The cache type has been updated to reflect this.
To Log this Cache:
Take the obligatory photo of your good self in front of the Saddlery at GZ. You may claim your log right away but you'll need the answers to these two questions to prove your visit to the site.
1) Outside the Saddlery parking illegal unless you meet what condition?
2) Next to the front door of the shop/museum is a sign. How much did Sir Stuart Alexander Donaldson pay for the land in 1858?
You can generate your unique Codeword to log this cache by answering the questions here!
Upload your photo, enter the codeword and complete your log! :D Then have fun exploring the rest of this great Aussie town!

Went for a walk and got some breaky and thought I'd check out what caches were in the area. 2 where I parked! One on each site. Well when I returned to my car it started to rain and a couple of people took shelter at the saddler. Half hour later they left and some tourists arrived following an historic map. I say on the step waiting for them to go trying not to look too obvious but just couldn't do it. So I got the info required for this one, and finding out I have to stay the night, decided to return under cover of darkness for the other.
Thanks for populating this place with caches. Who knows, maybe I'll move here and help populate it with more GCA physical caches. I've got a soft spot for this area and am searching for work and a place to sit for a few years, so....
On the move from Uralla to Tenterfield and stopped to find this history cache. Unfortunately the shop was shut as were a lot of others in the town, must be Monday. TFTHC
Thanks for the cache.
I sometimes wonder if Peter Allen hasn't mentioned the saddlery in his song, whether this would still be here. Since we called in here while doing Net88's whereIgo I noticed at least one other building (now closed down) with signage to suggest it was a saddlery. Something to consider.
Thanks for the cache.
TFTC.
Thanks for the visit Zalgariath....
We parked nearby when we saw the signs at the front then walked back to check it out. Worth a quick visit.
Logged with CO's permission.
Thanks Zalgariath.

Thanks, we learnt quite a bit about the song during our stay in this town.

The Bunny remembered all the answers for me.
Thank you for placing and maintaining this cache for us to find!
We have been here BC (Before Caching) and was impressed with the display so a night time visit to grab a couple of caches was on the cards.
Information grabbed and sent.
Thanks for the cache Zal.
Thanks Zalgariath for the cache.
Happy New Year

178km from Home
On the way home from our Car Racing Team's Christmas party.
The signs are still there, took the required photo, gathered the required information.
Unfortunately (again) we picked a day when the museum wasn’t open.
We then headed off and did the GC cache by the same name making a total of 3 caches we have found by that name (We did the now archived GC cache as one of our first 5 finds
Took nothing but memories and left nothing but our tag and footprints.
Thanks for the cache Zalgariath.

Discovering Australia and the World, one hidden treasure at a time.
Clip clop, clippity, neigh.
Illegally parked ? Not me
I peered through the saddlery window on a Sunday morning to inspect the wares on offer.
Window shopping was all I could do as the shop is not open today.
But I did take the time to gather the trimmings required to claim a find on this cache
Log with permission by owner.
Thanks for bring me here and interesting history.
Thanks Zalgariath
My boss is a history nut, and gave me a long talk on Parkes & federation on Friday before I left work. Unfortunately we didn't have to look around Tenterfield in the dark to find the spot Parkes gave his speech. Maybe next time? At the time, finding somewhere open for dinner & then somewhere to camp were higher priorities. Dinner was solved by finding a gourmet pizza shop (where they gave us free pizza, as they'd overcatered for a function), and the camp spot was solved by driving towards Casino & pulling over for the Crooked Cache, it's located at a free camping ground.
This was a good spot, we got to log 2 for 1, as there is now a traditional GC cache here.
Thanks Zalgariath .
Thanks Zalgariath.
TFTC and the tenor.
Thanks for the cache.
