Description

The Tenterfield Saddler

"Time is a Traveller, Tenterfield Saddler turn your head. Right again Jackaroo, think I see a kangaroo up ahead..."

Tenterfield NSW is a town steeped in history. On the 24th October 1889, Sir Henry Parkes gave his famous Federation Speech in this town, and it is often referred to as the Birthplace of the Nation. How shocked and appalled I was to find there was not a single cache hidden in town! While many may be unaware this is where the Federation Movement really began to gather steam, those same folk may have heard of a tune called "Tenterfield Saddler" by the Boy from Oz, Peter Allen.

Peter Allen was born and raised in Tenterfield and the song he wrote is about his Grandfather, George Woolnough, who worked in the Saddlery from 1908 to 1960. These days the Saddlery is National Trust Listed and is a Museum / Shop of a bygone era. On November 26, 2005 an extension of the Tenterfield library was opened and named the "George Woolnough Wing".

Sir Stuart Alexander Donaldson purchased the land in 1858. He later went on to be the First Premier of NSW. The Saddlery itself was built in 1870 out of local hand-cut bluestone and during its life served as a bank, a private home, and then reverted to a Saddlery in 1897 as it stands to this day.

"Time is a Tale Teller, Tenterfield Saddler make a bet. Fly away Cockatoo, down on the ground Emu up ahead."

Unfortunately being a Sydney Boy I couldn't maintain a physical cache this far from home, so a Virtual will have to suffice and hopefully encourage local cachers to populate this historic town in a few more real ones!

June 2018 Update - It completely slipped my mind that when History caches were introduced this would be a perfect candidate. The cache type has been updated to reflect this.

To Log this Cache:

Take the obligatory photo of your good self in front of the Saddlery at GZ. You may claim your log right away but you'll need the answers to these two questions to prove your visit to the site.

1) Outside the Saddlery parking illegal unless you meet what condition?

2) Next to the front door of the shop/museum is a sign. How much did Sir Stuart Alexander Donaldson pay for the land in 1858?

You can generate your unique Codeword to log this cache by answering the questions here!

Upload your photo, enter the codeword and complete your log! :D Then have fun exploring the rest of this great Aussie town!

Spotted on our LGA hunting drive from Inverell to Tamworth, Kyogle and back to Armidale.... We couldn't visit Tenterfield without going to the Saddler. We were a little disappointed that the only souvenir they had was a tea-towel though!

Out and about in Tenterfield today and this is one spot I visited.

Wow what an interesting bit of history and I had heard of this before. Thanks for showcasing this.

I wasn't planning to be here today exactly, but my caravan wheel had other ideas. Left the caravan at Bridgestone this morning (reversing the caravan in the main street isn't great at 8.30am - very grateful I could hand the keys to a more experienced caravan tower from the park I stayed at last night). Just (10.30am) informed the van will need to stay there till tomorrow awaiting more studs. After dropping off the caravan I drove around the block looking for somewhere to park and happened upon some strange no parking signs with a parking space right next to them. Oh, look where I've ended up!

Went for a walk and got some breaky and thought I'd check out what caches were in the area. 2 where I parked! One on each site. Well when I returned to my car it started to rain and a couple of people took shelter at the saddler. Half hour later they left and some tourists arrived following an historic map. I say on the step waiting for them to go trying not to look too obvious but just couldn't do it. So I got the info required for this one, and finding out I have to stay the night, decided to return under cover of darkness for the other.

Thanks for populating this place with caches. Who knows, maybe I'll move here and help populate it with more GCA physical caches. I've got a soft spot for this area and am searching for work and a place to sit for a few years, so....

One thing Covid has taught me is how to log a GA cache, I know I have been here at least a dozen times and taken the pic but then not known what to do with it, hopefully I got it this time. Thanks for taking me on a visit of favourite site of mine.

I loved the sign outside, made me tell Peter that he would have to move the car. I wonder if that kind of vehicle ever comes here? Its a pity that we were not here when it was open, Max and I had to peer though the window instead.

Thanks for the cache.

I have the sneaking suspicion that this is the first History cache I have found. Granted I have published four - an early adopter but until we visited Tenterfield this has been the first I have been able to do

I sometimes wonder if Peter Allen hasn't mentioned the saddlery in his song, whether this would still be here. Since we called in here while doing Net88's whereIgo I noticed at least one other building (now closed down) with signage to suggest it was a saddlery. Something to consider.

Thanks for the cache.

#GA2990 - 10:10; Day two of a trip to the Gold Coast and after a quiet night in Glen Innes, I headed off to grab a couple of the local trigs, then it was time to hit the road again, next stop Tenterfield. Collected the local CORS and then on to thsi cache. Enjoyed having a good look around and learned a few things along the way. This would make a great History cache, now that cache type has been created. TFTC Zalgariath Very HappyClan Cerberus

On our way home to QLD today and we arrived in Tenterfield this morning. We stopped by 'Australia's Oldest Cork Tree' first - pretty impressive - then on through town. As we drove past the 'Tenterfield Saddler' museum we saw it was open.
We parked nearby when we saw the signs at the front then walked back to check it out. Worth a quick visit.
Logged with CO's permission.
Thanks Zalgariath.

What would a visit to Tenterfield be without a visit to this establishment. Such a pity it is not opened and the signs in the window suggest that it mightn't be for a while.
Thanks, we learnt quite a bit about the song during our stay in this town.

On our way up to Tin Can Bay to visit some friends and family and decided to drop in to Tenterfield on the way.

We have been here BC (Before Caching) and was impressed with the display so a night time visit to grab a couple of caches was on the cards.

Information grabbed and sent.

Thanks for the cache Zal.

I stopped by on my way home after working in Armidale this week. At 5:30pm on News Years Eve there weren't many people about. All getting ready for a big night. I've been past plenty of times but never stopped to have a look.
Thanks Zalgariath for the cache.
Happy New Year

Tenterfield Saddler

178km from Home
On the way home from our Car Racing Team's Christmas party.
The signs are still there, took the required photo, gathered the required information.
Unfortunately (again) we picked a day when the museum wasn’t open.
We then headed off and did the GC cache by the same name making a total of 3 caches we have found by that name (We did the now archived GC cache as one of our first 5 finds
Took nothing but memories and left nothing but our tag and footprints.

Thanks for the cache Zalgariath.

Whoa there boy !!
Clip clop, clippity, neigh.
Illegally parked ? Not me Wink
I peered through the saddlery window on a Sunday morning to inspect the wares on offer.
Window shopping was all I could do as the shop is not open today.
But I did take the time to gather the trimmings required to claim a find on this cache Very Happy

Toriaz and I did the GC traditional cache here on Saturday night. She said the saddlery was also the site of a GCA virtual, so we got the required photos and pictures done. I remember Peter Allen's song from years ago. Now I actually got to see its inspiration. Thanks

Bikerbuddy & I spent the long weekend driving up to Tenterfield, across to Casino then back home via the Pacific Highway, just so that we could log caches in the last 3 regions of the State for the NSW State Challenge cache in Katoomba. Tenterfield had been our goal to reach on Saturday & we were glad to finally make it.

My boss is a history nut, and gave me a long talk on Parkes & federation on Friday before I left work. Unfortunately we didn't have to look around Tenterfield in the dark to find the spot Parkes gave his speech. Maybe next time? At the time, finding somewhere open for dinner & then somewhere to camp were higher priorities. Dinner was solved by finding a gourmet pizza shop (where they gave us free pizza, as they'd overcatered for a function), and the camp spot was solved by driving towards Casino & pulling over for the Crooked Cache, it's located at a free camping ground.

This was a good spot, we got to log 2 for 1, as there is now a traditional GC cache here.

Thanks Zalgariath Very Happy .

Found at 1400. Have sent the required information to the CO. Very quiet in the street whilst I was there. Very interesting looking in the windows and reading what was there. Will upload photo soon. Had to drive around theblock to find a park and later discovered I could have parked in the car park at the back. Closed today.

PM sent. Unable to load photo yet as USB port not co-operating. I used to live in this town & at that time, the saddlery was a black smiths & we took our horses there to be shod. Never met that other bloke. Thanks Zal.

Found this cache on a Senior Cit's field trip from Emmaville. We came to Tenterfield to see the movie Red Dog and had lunch at the Hotel. It was a beautiful sunny day but I'll have to return some day when the Saddler is open.

Found it on a cold, wet Saturday morning. The business wasn't opened while I was there. I've driven past here a number of times, and didn't know the Saddler was here. I'll email the answers to the questions now. Thanks Zalgariath - nice one!

Seeked out the Saddlery early before it had opened, so I didn't have to "explain" to anyone what I was up to. TFTC
