Description

Despite appearances to the contrary, Preston Road is a legal public road. It is signposted from SH85 a few kilometres east of Kyeburn. The other end is on Mundell Road, which is signposted from SH87, also a few kilometres from Kyeburn. It is listed in at least one 4x4 guidebook so that provides an indication of the type of road.

To help keep you on the right path here's some help.

SH85 end of Preston Road.

Zero tripmeter

0.3 kilometres Cattlestop

0.9 Cattlestop. Shed on R.

1.1 Turn R through gate. Track deteriorates.

1.5 Gate. Track turns R to follow fenceline.

2.6 Gate.

2.8 Small rise. Fenceline on R.

3.6 Gate. Fenceline now on L. Track now ruts through long grass.

4.3 Gate. Intersection with Cemetery Rd. Veer left (Preston Rd signposted). Surface improves.

7.5 Haybarn.

7.9 Ford.

8.3 End. Mundell Rd. Go R to SH87.

Obviously, if travelling in the opposite direction, make the appropriate adjustments.

Cache should be a straightforward find. Small snaplock. BYOP. Please re-hide carefully.

Cautions: Ford probably impassable if there has been heavy rain. If so, use Cemetery Road as a bypass. Cache can be walked, run or MTBed to. Track great for trail/dualsport or adventure-type motorcycles. Probably not suitable for two-wheel drive cars even in dry conditions due to ground clearance issues. Possibly OK in a soft-roader with good clearance. Piece of cake in a 4x4. Judge the time of year and recent weather carefully and make a call.  When previously published on another platform, a cacher doing the three Preston Road hides had to have their 2WD car towed out by a tractor - you have been warned!

Logs

20-Mar-22
See our log for PR2 - from there, it is a good road all the way to this cache. Lovely to see this part of the country and fill in a new area - those conical hills are scenic! Cache nicely tucked away, all good and dry. Signed our name, wrote the new cache code onto the logsheet, signed our name again! Then a lovely glide downhill back to the car.

Our recommendation for people who don't have proper off-road 4WD trucks - drive in from the Pigroot, find this cache PR One and then PR Two. The road is okay for 2WD cars as far as PR 2. Then turn around and return the same way.

This cache was previously published on another platform (from where it has been archived for several months). The log sheet will have entries relating to this previous 'life'. Please disregard them. The first to log after 21 December 2021 is the FTF for this iteration of the hide. Hopefully the log sheet will be changed shortly.
