Pacific Fair

Some people lose themselves in Pacific Fair, wandering between one designer shop to another - credit card in hand. If you appreciate shopping even less than I do, why not appreciate some of the gardens and fountains at the fair and then set off to find this nearby geocache.

Like most Gold Coast attractions, what was once a modest, budget friendly place has now blown out into something hugely grand, where expensive and luxury items are a-plenty.

In the 1950s the western side of the Gold Coast Highway from Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads had very few developments, as it was a swampy area with some  sand mining activity.

By the 1960’s urban development was underway and, in 1970, the Albert Shire Council gave approval for a 50 acre shopping centre on the western bank of Little Tallebudgera Creek at Broadbeach, south of Margaret Street. Construction started on the new shopping centre in May 1976. The new complex took 16 months to complete at a cost of approximately 17 million dollars.

Pacific Fair opened on 23 August 1977 and was a state-of-the-art shopping centre with 96 specialty stores, entertainment, a fish pond and 300 carparks. Pacific Fair had a colonial Australian style of architecture with verandas and awnings, themed ‘village style’ streets with ample seating, lakes filled with water lilies and goldfish and a small train for customers to ride. In 1989, a three year five stage redevelopment project took place. The appearance of the complex was drastically altered and pink turrets were constructed on the roof tops overlooking Little Tallebudgera Creek. During this period, Pacific Fair was the third largest shopping centre in Australia.

Four decades after the complex opened, Pacific Fair underwent a major multi stage transformation at the cost of $670 million. The pink turrets were removed and replaced with a simple logo of intertwined initials. The centre measures 150,000 square metres adding 46,500 square metres of retail space equating to 350 more retails shops and 6,200 more parking spaces than when it first opened in 1977.

Pacific Fair features outdoor resort style seating, gardens, a grand staircase over waterways connected by timber bridges, a glass roofed atrium and skylights with powder room style toilet facilities inspired by 1950s surfing artwork and the iconic Pink Poodle Motel.

The cache is a tiny thing, attached to a pole. You should be able to get it without looking to circumspect.

I failed here today. Not saying it isn't here, just that I didn't try hard enough in location 1 assuming it was in location 2, which i spent a lot of time walking in circles at and obviously wasn't the right location.

Arrived after a HOTA visit, a gorgeous sunset, and dark. I then proceeded to wander in wonder at how this place had changed so much since my last visit... when it was only 1 level with 1 pool in the centre of the courtyard (I swear it was larger though! haha), had remote control boats you could pay to play with on the pool, and a little shop shack by the pool where I bought a cute little white shell bracelet that was my pride and joy for a few years. I might be remembering it all wrong though as it was quite some time ago. haha. I enjoyed window shopping, thankful that they were all shut so I wasn't tempted to buy anything, and munched on a delicious burger. Then it was cache hunt time, and then find where I parked my car time, and then hunt again time.

I figure I could go back to Location 1 and try again, but the peak-hour traffic should have subsided by now, so it's time to return to 'base camp' and save my energy for tomorrow's sculpture festival garden wander.

We haven't been to Pacific Fair in yonks. The amount of cars that take the turn off the Gold Coast Highway is frightening in itself, let alone the carpark where they're going. Shocked But today we sucked it up and turned in to the shopping centre with the horde. MrG wanted to know where to park. I suggested where the buses come in because in 1979 that was a good parking space. Cool Things may have changed somewhat but the parking hurdle was done. Now to find the cache. Awestruck by the towering facade we almost got ran over twice but arrived with GZ in our sights. This is the most audacious hide and there was no point in waiting for a completely mugglefree moment so we sidled up and did a deft grab of the container. Just as we hoped, a blank logsheet. {FTF} about 3.30pm.

We had no intention of venturing further into the retail metropolis but 2 pairs of shoes, a jumper, 3 pairs of socks and an icecream later we emerged shaking our heads like we'd been hynotised.... How did that happen... Confused We needed to get outta there... it was just a matter of finding that 1979 carpark.

And what was wrong with the 96 stores and the fishpond anyway..... ? TFTC MattyRx

If you've seen one retail job, then you've seen the mall.
