Description
The Launceston Jewish Cemetery was established in April 1847 and the earliest burials were three children; Jona Lyons and Elizabeth Nathan in April and May 1850 and Elizabeth Robinson in December 1853. While it was believed that only 12 people were interred there is has been suggested that there were actually at least 20 burials. This was the result of a report in the Tasmanian Mail on March 9th 1927, reporting the "shocking state of disrepair" of the paddock containing 17 to 20 headstones.
The trustees , Harry Joseph and Sim Crawcour took responsibility to clean up the grounds with financial assistance provided by Miss Elizabeth Fall and Mrs Catherine Hartnoll of Evandale. However, by 1938 the state of the cemetery had declined again and only 12 headstones remained. These headstones were removed in 1938 and the trustees offered the land to the Launceston City Council. It was named Monash Reserve in 1939 after WW I Army Commander Sir John Monash. It was also used for six months in 1942 as the site for an air raid shelter during WW II. The trenches were dug at a distance from the cemetery site, based on a plan made of the grave plot locations prior to the headstones removal.
