Description
This cache can be found as you drive towards the township of Cherbourg. During our travels we have visited many First Nation LGAs and towns, but never have we seen one like Cherbourg. It is the neatest, cleanest we have seen. I am not sure if they participate in the Tidy Towns programme but they would certainly do extremely well if they did. I recommend a visit and drive around the well laid out streets of this pretty town.
Originally known as Barambah, firstly as a Mission and then as an Aboriginal Settlement, in 1932 the name was changed to the Cherbourg Aboriginal Settlement. It was initially populated with a few local aboriginal people but later people were forcibly removed from their own homes and resettled into Cherbourg.
During the 1980s Cherbourg was granted a Deed of Grant in Trust giving its local council formal recognition as a Local Government.
