Description

The Cougal Spiral is a heritage-listed single track railway tunnel and spiral feature of the North Coast railway line in Australia that connects New South Wales with Queensland through the Richmond Gap. It was built during 1930, and this cache is located at an excellent vantage point to watch a train snake it's way through the loop. There's toilets, wood burning BBQs and picnic tables very close to the cache location, so an excellent place to have a rest and a picnic lunch.

If you'd like to hang around to see a train pass by, freight trains timetables are available at the following website:   ARTC Master Tain Plan

  • Click the link,
  • Find NSW - QLD,
  • Click on Telegraph Point to Roma St (Northbound Trains) or Roma St to Telegraph Point (Southbound Trains),
  • Find Loadstone time on the timetable.

Or you can watch the loop in action on this YouTube video.

The cache is a small container, loaded with swaps and trinkets and stuff. Don't forget the other cache a bit further up the road, which will take you to the mouth of the train tunnel between NSW and QLD.

I was here with the previous finder so had confirmation this was definitely gone. I happened to have a container in my car that could work as a replacement. So, I've placed a small container with swag that may hopefully survive a while till the CO can come and place one more suitable.

Was great to finally get to this location after watching caches come and go over the years.

I finally got here!!!
... and there was almost nothing to see of the railway through the trees. And no geocache. I wondered if someone found the archived GC cache and removed it because it was archived and a cool cache and had cool swag. Sad

I decided to drop in to visit this area on route back to Queensland after spending a wonderful weekend inside Border Ranges National Park. Lots of history and interesting things to look at and discover in this location. There’s more to this road than I ever imagined! I’m looking forward to checking out each cache and area over multiple visits. I’ll wander along the nearby Border Loop walking track sometime soon.

It took me while find this cache. It turned out to be in the first place I looked. I eventually returned to this place and followed the hint in a more extreme way... there you are! The cache and contents are in perfect condition, thanks for placing Smile

Called by today and wanted to check on this cache, however roadworks had the entrance blocked so I'll have to check again another day soon.

Our last stop for the day and no luck here ,the GPS was all over the place ,and the one spot which we thought matched the hint was bare
