Safe pull-off area if heading towards Outram. Smaller pull-off area on opposite side of road.
The cache gets its name from something that happened for me in circa 2008 at this exact spot. I always think of it as I pass the location. It was late summer so the evening was still reasonably light. A new geocache was published at the road/rail bridge on the road from SH87 to Pukerangi. I decided to jump on the bike and try for the FTF. The ride from Dunedin was pleasant and uneventful. As I passed this spot I noticed two elderly women dealing with a flat tyre on their car. Even from the briefest glimpse I got as I passed I could see that it wasn't going well. I found a safe place to turn further along the road and went back. From the moment I pulled up on the bike I could tell that my presence was unwelcome. However, I offered to change the wheel for them. NO! was the immediate response. They quite aggressively informed me that they were fine and added that help had been summoned and would be there any moment. This surprised me as I doubted there was mobile phone reception at the location at that time. I bid farewell and continued to the cache.
I was left a bit bemused by the exchange. They clearly were having trouble getting the wheelnuts off and I was sceptical that they had been able to call for assistance. So why had they refused my help? Could it have been because I was a motorcyclist? Would they have been open to accepting my help if I had been wearing a suit and pulled up in a flash car? Oh well, let's hope it had nothing to do with stereotypes and discrimination and that they were just fiercely independent.
