Description
Gibberagee Fire Lookout
You don't stumble across this fire tower by accident. It's only 6km or so from the little village of Whiporie, but you don't stumble across this town by accident either. Located halfway between Casino and Grafton, you head east along Bungawalbin-Whiporie Road, turning into Hannas Rd, then onward to Lookout Road. You’ll be in state forest now, so the roads are dirt and conditions can be variable. When placing this cache the roads were just graded, and conditions dry. I could have done this a 2WD, but any other time a 4WD would be better. At the end of Lookout Road, the fire tower is just a few hundred meters North along Cahills Road. The tower serves as a vantage point for spotting bushfires, however from ground level there are only small bits of vista can be seen between the trees. There’s a fence around the tower too, so not possible to go up and have a look at what must be some spectacular views over the various forestry plots that are located out this way. The box is hidden on the side the road - shouldn’t be too hard to find. There’s a few swaps in there and a GCA FTF Pathtag for the first one to find it. |

Note to anyone interested: Devil's Pulpit SF within which both east and south coordinates fittingly end in 15.666 is not accessible. There goes a good themed cache I was going to hide.
Likewise, [Now To] Mororo SF is also locked off.
AND the most southern part of Gibberagee SF at Tullymorgan is currently being forested so it's closed too. That's 3 locations I now won't be hiding mmmmystery caches. Haha
Well, as I was in the area, I figured I'd come check this cache and fire tower out. It was a nice drive through the forest, quite like one I did happen to find open on my way here. The fire tower is still standing tall looking out over the countryside. Shame Lookout Rd didn't live up to its name, unless the person who goes up in the fire tower named it. As I wandered over to GZ a big shadow fell upon me causing me to look up. It was the top of the tower, perfectly hiding the sun. I had to take a photo of it.
Great location for a cache. Thanks. Took some swag and left some in return.
