Description

This brand new series will have you exploring various areas around the Great Lake in Tasmania's Central Highlands.

Great Lake (also known as yingina) is located 1,034 metres above sea level on Tasmania’s Central Plateau. Prior to its damming in 1916, it was one of Australia’s greatest natural freshwater lake systems. To boost storage, the Miena multiple arch dam was built across the outlet in 1922. Downstream, a sloping core rock fill dam was built in 1967. The rock fill dam was then elevated 6 metres in 1982, and a levee was constructed over a saddle on the storage rim. The lake has a capacity of 17,610 hectares and 3,178 million cubic metres of water when full.

The Great Lake is also well known for its Trout fishing and is a go to fishing spot for some Tasmanians.

Some of these caches will be driveby but other will require some walking. Some will require you bring your own writing implement while others may have a pen in them.

This area maybe inaccessable during the winter months when there is snow around if you dont have the appropriate vehicle or gear.

If attempting this series in the snow you do so at your own risk. So make sure you check the forecast before heading off to do this series.

If you’re spending a whole day here or staying overnight, it’s worth remembering that this is a very isolated part of Tasmania. There are limited options for buying food, you may want to bring in your own food and if necessary any medication or first aid supplies.

Hi DEZ055.
Today whilst plundering caches from Mangalore to Deloraine, we looked for this cache.
Alas, we only managed a DNF. We resorted to reading previous logs and confirmed we were looking in the correct place.

Today was the day to head to the lakes. The forecast looked good before it was going to deteriorate so we headed off early at 6.45 am and returned home by 4.45 pm. A fun ten hours of driving and caching and all up 31 GCA caches and 5 GC caches were found. Spot on coordinates helped us in the search but as sirius said a high clearance car is needed. Thanks to sirius for the helpful comments in his logs. We have a 4 x 4 but in some places left it parked and walked as the tracks consisted of loose large stones. Also you have to get the right track as there are plenty to choose from. A very enjoyable day out, the weather was fine, clear, calm and reached 21 degrees. Thanks for creating, a lot of work has gone into the series. We drove in to the boat ramp as came from the south and did the GC, GCA #10 and this one. We walked from the boat ramp but could have driven. TFTC
