Description

This brand new series will have you exploring various areas around the Great Lake in Tasmania's Central Highlands.

Great Lake (also known as yingina) is located 1,034 metres above sea level on Tasmania’s Central Plateau. Prior to its damming in 1916, it was one of Australia’s greatest natural freshwater lake systems. To boost storage, the Miena multiple arch dam was built across the outlet in 1922. Downstream, a sloping core rock fill dam was built in 1967. The rock fill dam was then elevated 6 metres in 1982, and a levee was constructed over a saddle on the storage rim. The lake has a capacity of 17,610 hectares and 3,178 million cubic metres of water when full.

The Great Lake is also well known for its Trout fishing and is a go to fishing spot for some Tasmanians.

Some of these caches will be driveby but other will require some walking. Some will require you bring your own writing implement while others may have a pen in them.

This area maybe inaccessable during the winter months when there is snow around if you dont have the appropriate vehicle or gear.

If attempting this series in the snow you do so at your own risk. So make sure you check the forecast before heading off to do this series.

If you’re spending a whole day here or staying overnight, it’s worth remembering that this is a very isolated part of Tasmania. There are limited options for buying food, you may want to bring in your own food and if necessary any medication or first aid supplies.

Hi DEZ055.
Today VK7HCH continued our plundering of caches between home and the northwest of the state.
On Day 1 of the plunderage, your cache was one of those that we found.
We worked our way from Mangalore to Deloraine via the Central Highlands finding caches as we went.
Thanks for placing this cache for us to find.

Swampy and I decided that we needed to continue our plunder of caches in the north west of the state. Countless hours were spent solving puzzles, planning routes and generally preparing for the onslaught. This was going to encompass caches both from GC and GCA. Thanks for placing this hide.

Caching in the highlands we only managed to scratch the surface of this series. We found everyone we looked for.
Thanks DEZ055

This was another road that was easily negotiated and we soon had the cache in hand. Container and contents were in good condition.

Thanks for this cache and the series Dez055. We appreciate the care you have taken when selecting hides and placing caches.

Today was the day to head to the lakes. The forecast looked good before it was going to deteriorate so we headed off early at 6.45 am and returned home by 4.45 pm. A fun ten hours of driving and caching and all up 31 GCA caches and 5 GC caches were found. Spot on coordinates helped us in the search but as sirius said a high clearance car is needed. Thanks to sirius for the helpful comments in his logs. We have a 4 x 4 but in some places left it parked and walked as the tracks consisted of loose large stones. Also you have to get the right track as there are plenty to choose from. A very enjoyable day out. We hope the cache doesn't get blown off its perch in strong winds. TFTC
