Description

This brand new series will have you exploring various areas around the Great Lake in Tasmania's Central Highlands.

Great Lake (also known as yingina) is located 1,034 metres above sea level on Tasmania’s Central Plateau. Prior to its damming in 1916, it was one of Australia’s greatest natural freshwater lake systems. To boost storage, the Miena multiple arch dam was built across the outlet in 1922. Downstream, a sloping core rock fill dam was built in 1967. The rock fill dam was then elevated 6 metres in 1982, and a levee was constructed over a saddle on the storage rim. The lake has a capacity of 17,610 hectares and 3,178 million cubic metres of water when full.

The Great Lake is also well known for its Trout fishing and is a go to fishing spot for some Tasmanians.

Some of these caches will be driveby but other will require some walking. Some will require you bring your own writing implement while others may have a pen in them.

This area maybe inaccessable during the winter months when there is snow around if you dont have the appropriate vehicle or gear.

If attempting this series in the snow you do so at your own risk. So make sure you check the forecast before heading off to do this series.

If you’re spending a whole day here or staying overnight, it’s worth remembering that this is a very isolated part of Tasmania. There are limited options for buying food, you may want to bring in your own food and if necessary any medication or first aid supplies.

Hi DEZ055. Today we found your cache on the Devo trip for the year.
VK7HCH and I hatched yet another plan to whip it up to the north to continue our plundering of caches both GC and GCA. As there are so many caches in this area we had freedom of choice to do those we wished to. We have solved a few puzzles so we can find those and lots of others. Although I didn’t find the girl U want, the caches were enough. It’s a beautiful world here in Tassie.

Thanks for hiding the cache for us to find today.

Swampy and I headed back to plunder more of the Northern coast over the Hobart Show long weekend. 4 day long weekend for 1 days annual leave. Sweet. This is day 1. Hobart to Devonport via the central highlands. This run has us finding both GC and GCA caches. So many caches, so little time.

Caching in the highlands we only managed to scratch the surface of this series. We found everyone we looked for.
Thanks DEZ055

We had not been down this track before but it looked OK. As we proceded the track became very rocky so we parked about 50m from the cache and Mrs y'stassie walked the short distance. We love the little old shrubs in this area. They are often covered in a short version of Old Man's Beard - a lichen found in cold areas. Many of these trees were burnt in the fires several years ago. Once burnt they die and do not regenerate like gums.

The cache was found quickly and the log signed before everything was replaced as found. They cache and contents were in good condition although the log sheet was slightly soft.

Thanks for another cache in this series Dez055. After reading Whitewebbs log we were glad it was cold and the snake they saw was keeping warm well away from us.

Today was the day to head to the lakes. The forecast looked good before it was going to deteriorate so we headed off early at 6.45 am and returned home by 4.45 pm. A fun ten hours of driving and caching and all up 31 GCA caches and 5 GC caches were found. Spot on coordinates helped us in the search but as sirius said a high clearance car is needed. Thanks to sirius for the helpful comments in his logs. We have a 4 x 4 but in some places left it parked and walked as the tracks consisted of loose large stones. Also you have to get the right track as there are plenty to choose from. A very enjoyable day out. Coming from the south we turned into the track too soon. Turn in where there is a large GRID sign. Saw a huge big black snake on the road heading to cache. We parked 60 m short of GZ but got too rocky so walked. TFTC
