Description

This brand new series will have you exploring various areas around the Great Lake in Tasmania's Central Highlands.

Great Lake (also known as yingina) is located 1,034 metres above sea level on Tasmania’s Central Plateau. Prior to its damming in 1916, it was one of Australia’s greatest natural freshwater lake systems. To boost storage, the Miena multiple arch dam was built across the outlet in 1922. Downstream, a sloping core rock fill dam was built in 1967. The rock fill dam was then elevated 6 metres in 1982, and a levee was constructed over a saddle on the storage rim. The lake has a capacity of 17,610 hectares and 3,178 million cubic metres of water when full.

The Great Lake is also well known for its Trout fishing and is a go to fishing spot for some Tasmanians.

Some of these caches will be driveby but other will require some walking. Some will require you bring your own writing implement while others may have a pen in them.

This area maybe inaccessable during the winter months when there is snow around if you dont have the appropriate vehicle or gear.

If attempting this series in the snow you do so at your own risk. So make sure you check the forecast before heading off to do this series.

If you’re spending a whole day here or staying overnight, it’s worth remembering that this is a very isolated part of Tasmania. There are limited options for buying food, you may want to bring in your own food and if necessary any medication or first aid supplies.

Hi DEZ055. Today we found your cache on the Devo trip for the year.
VK7HCH and I hatched yet another plan to whip it up to the north to continue our plundering of caches both GC and GCA. As there are so many caches in this area we had freedom of choice to do those we wished to. We have solved a few puzzles so we can find those and lots of others. Although I didn’t find the girl U want, the caches were enough. It’s a beautiful world here in Tassie.

Thanks for hiding the cache for us to find today.

FTF: No

Swampy and I headed back to plunder more of the Northern coast over the Hobart Show long weekend. 4 day long weekend for 1 days annual leave. Sweet. This is day 1. Hobart to Devonport via the central highlands. This run has us finding both GC and GCA caches. So many caches, so little time.

Caching in the highlands we only managed to scratch the surface of this series. We found everyone we looked for.
We had to watch for muggles, but soon realized they didn't have any interest in us
Thanks DEZ055

We were returning to the coast after spending some time with our daughter and, as the weather looked OK we decided to go home via the central highlands and look for some of the Trout GeoArt caches. When we originally looked at this series our plans were for an approach from the north however today we were starting from the other end so had to make a few adjustments.

Having found the right track we started with No28, then No29 and finally this cache. We made the short walk from the track and had no trouble spotting the cache. Reaching it was another matter as we needed to climb onto a lower branch. After a little prodding and poking we were sure the area was solid. Once closer to the hide we were able to access the cache container and add our name to the list of finders.

Thanks for this cache Dez055. We were glad it was only 6 degrees as this area can be quite snakey in hot weather. As there was a lot of water on the track we turned and headed back the way we came.

Today was the day to head to the lakes. The forecast looked good before it was going to deteriorate so we headed off early at 6.45 am and returned home by 4.45 pm. A fun ten hours of driving and caching and all up 31 GCA caches and 5 GC caches were found. Spot on coordinates helped us in the search but as sirius said a high clearance car is needed. Thanks to sirius for the helpful comments in his logs. We have a 4 x 4 but in some places left it parked and walked as the tracks consisted of loose large stones. Also you have to get the right track as there are plenty to choose from. A very enjoyable day out. Drove down a track from the boat ramp and did #29 and #28 before coming back out as coming from the south. Another recommendation here for the whole series. We too went on lots of tracks we have never been on before. TFTC

Finally the last cache. Continued along the track from the previous 2 caches where the hide was soon spotted.
Continued south along the track a short distance to the boat ramp ane exit.

Have thoroughly enjoyed this series of caches taking me to places I've never been to and being able to explore all the tracks.

Many thanks DEZ055 for placing a great geoart series in a great location....highly reccommended...and very much appreciated...cheers ST.
