Description
Byrangery Grass Reserve
The Byrangery Grass Reserve is a pristine 15-hectare environmental sanctuary situated south of Goonengerry in the Northern Rivers region, close to Byron Bay. It’s a vital piece of the ecological puzzle, forming part of the remnants of the once vast "The Big Scrub," a subtropical lowland rainforest dramatically reduced in size due to agricultural expansion. The reserve's unique topography supports a mosaic of habitats, including grassy woodlands, wet and dry sclerophyll forests, and patches of rainforest, which collectively provide refuge for a plethora of wildlife, including endangered species.
This rich diversity of habitats has made Byrangery a crucial wildlife haven, offering food, shelter, and a corridor for movement to species like koalas, which enjoy a specially designated “safety zone,” black cockatoos, Pacific bazas, major skinks, various migratory birds, and several bat species. Additionally, the reserve is home to numerous endangered and significant plants, such as the arrowhead vine, southern quassia, and the red bopple nut, all contributing to the site's ecological value.
Despite its relatively modest size, the Byrangery Grass Reserve punches above its weight in ecological importance. It acts as a dispersal point for fauna moving between nearby national parks and other regenerated private lands. This connectivity is essential for the genetic diversity and resilience of species populations, particularly in the context of environmental changes and habitat fragmentation. The reserve is a living testament to the benefits of long-term ecological planning and management, demonstrating how a small-scale conservation effort can have a far-reaching impact on the broader landscape.
The ongoing management of the reserve focuses on fostering an environment that can sustain itself. Over the years, the natural regeneration of native flora, coupled with the control of invasive species, has transformed Byrangery into a self-managing ecosystem. This sustainable approach ensures that the reserve will continue to thrive as a biodiversity hotspot, supporting the natural heritage of the Northern Rivers region for future generations.
To find this cache you'll have to take the walking track that takes in four different ecosystems, in just 20 minutes or so. The walk is marked and easy to follow. There's a bit of up-hill on the way there. A sign at the car park mentions its a 60 minute walk - return. The cache is a thermos which should be found quite easily at the listed coordinates. A logbook, pencil and some swaps are within, including a few pathtags. There's parking for two or three cars at the entrance on Mafeking Road.
