Description
Oates Bridge was named after Charles Oates and opened in 1912. It was a single lane timber bridge supported by steel lattice girders. It was designed by Mr Middleton of the Public Works Department and constructed for a cost of around £3,500. Mr Middleton's intent was that the bridge should endure beyond the lifetime of those present at its opening. And that it did, surving for 111 years.
On 1 September 2023 a new concrete bridge took its place at a cost of $6.4 million. While the new bridge lacks the charm of the original narrow rickety bridge, it operates with two lanes of traffic and incorporates a separated shared path for improved safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
The bridge crosses Mountain River on the Lollara Road. Under the bridge is a wonderful spot to fish for a trout.
Take care when climbing the rocks. Please take away any rubbish.
