Description
Meshtastic! This geocache is not at the listed coordinates. To find this cache you'll have to have an understanding, and some compatible hardware to connect to a Meshtastic LoRa Node. Meshtastic is a communication system that doesn't rely on the internet or cell phone networks. It uses inexpensive radio boards to create a network, or 'mesh', that allows messages to be passed around. You can set up these boards, called 'nodes', in different locations, like on top of a hill, to extend the network's range. It's particularly useful in areas where phone service is bad or nonexistent, such as remote hiking trails or during emergencies. As more nodes are added, the network becomes stronger and can cover larger areas. This makes Meshtastic a practical choice for outdoor enthusiasts and emergency responders who need to communicate over distances without relying on traditional networks. Part of the fun is placing a node on top of a hill and seeing how far it can broadcast. Anyone within range of the node can see it's coordinates and can communicate to other people if they have a node in range. This cache is located directly underneath node: OQR: Old Quarry Repeater. You'll need a Meshtastic node and be in line of sight to the towers located at the listed coordinates of this cache. With your node powered up, eventually you'll see the Old Quarry Repeater appear on your list of nodes. Go to the coordinates that the beacon is broadcasting from and you'll find the cache at your feet. I have been able to see this node active from most parts of the CBD You'll walk about 1km though scrubby terrain, and need to park your car halfway along Old Quarry Road to begin your hike - it's not the easiest slog - but then nothing about this cache is particularlty easy. Expect long grass and an overgrown faded trail. Some keen Meshtastic folks have likened parts of the hobby to Geocaching, so I thought why not combine the two! Plenty of information online about Meshtastic - or drop me a message if you need pointers on what to do. I found learning about the thing was part of the fun. Located very close to the Lismore Trig, so might as well log that one if you make it up here. |
Area in red should have visibility of the beacon. Trees/Buildings can stop the signal though, so best to be outside with as few obstructions between you and the listed coordinatees as possible. |
