Description
A bit of history in the Hunter
Wollombi's first genereal store was run by Michael Byrne, and was opened by 1840. He was also the correspondent for the Maitland Mercury from its inception in 1843 and left many insights into early Wollombi through his articles.
It was common for stores to run a delivery wagon around the district on a weekly basis buying and selling produce on the round.
Wollombi had two stores for much of the period from the 1850's to the 1930's but due to decline in the local economy, all were closed during the 1960's & 70's other than the Laguna shop.
At the current Wollombi General Store, the Chapman family were the original operators, opening it in the mid 1880's. Morley, a chemist followed, and Richard Owens who went on to found the Savemores chain of shops was the operator around World War 1.
Currently the Wollombi General Store is run by Sully and Sally, long time friends of yours truly bshwckr, and they have kindly permitted me to place this chirp.
The chirp will give you a secret message. if you mention the secret message to the shopkeeper, you will receive a treat. Obviously you will need to visit during shop hours to collect.
The secret message has to be the first words you utter otherwise no treat.
To log the visit, take a photo of yourself and/or your gps in front of the shop. This counts for those without the special Garmin chirp gps as well but you will miss out on the treat.

The Hancock Clan

Our Christmas ‘Family Catch Up’ run…
After an early start from South of Sydney, it was time for another leg stretch and this virtual provided the perfect opportunity. The shop wasn’t open so we didn’t feel cheated by not having a chirp capable gps. Very busy here even on Boxing Day. Interesting to read how the town had come back after almost dying during the hard times of last century.
Thanks for the cache bshwckr.

Discovering Australia and the World, one hidden treasure at a time.
We were on our way to Broke to look at a campsite for a weekend away not too far from home for the Brethren.
So all we could do was take a photo.
One day we hope to be back with a chirp enabled GPS.
Thanks.
However took the required photo so am able to log this cache - and very happy to claim a FTF!
And then worked out on way out of town, but with no time to return, what 'chirp' was about, so was unable to check it out... maybe will come across another like cache some time in the future.
Thanks for the fun of this cache with a difference bshwckr.
