Description

C&C continues its association with Wattle Park with a cache that explores evidence of Wattle Park's original ownership by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board.

The W class tram was introduced in 1923 to replace the A to V types that had existed under local tramways trusts prior to the formation of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board. The W Class tram has operated on Melbourne's tram network ever since, albeit in decreasing numbers in recent years.

Between 1923 and 1956, 748 trams were built in several variants, starting with the W1. These weren't a big success, and were later converted to the W2 design which endured for 60 years. The W6 version pictured here entered service in 1951 and was the most popular variant. At the playground in Wattle Park you will find the bodies of a couple of W2s which first entered service in 1927. (Their predecessors at the park were originally quite intact and were enthusiastically "steered" by a certain geocacher in her distant childhood. Ah, yes, the days when an icecream in a cone cost thruppence from the Chalet kiosk...)

These days, most of the remaining W Class trams are in storage at the Newport Workshops, although a few are still in service on some inner city routes, the free City Circle tourist route and the Colonial Tramcar Restaurant. A few were exported to the USA and other places; however their export was banned due to numerous calls for their preservation.

Futher information is available on Wikipedia and on railpage.org.au and many other places on the Internet.

The cache is quite close to Riversdale Rd, but we strongly suggest you don't try to park there. Inside the park there is ample parking and several other caches to be found. Bear in mind the name of the cache when you're trying to find it.

In town for a couple of days with LuckyL10n and we were out tonight trying our luck on a couple of caches. LuckyL10n had found this one a year or so ago, so I lead the way in, arrived at GZ and started the search. Being around 8.00pm, it was certainly dark, but with a bit of a search, the torch light soon showed me what I was looking for. Log was quickly signed and it was then just a matter of retracing our steps back to the high road and over to the car.

Thanks C&C....and interesting location, and I guess one has to wonder what it was all about. Very HappyVery Happy

I happened to finish up with my patients quite early and was able to sneak in a trip to Wattle Park for two more scavenges. This one was second on my to-do list and it was delayed by my receiving a ticking off. I parked at the cottage in what appeared to be an open-gate, asphalted area begging for cars to park there and no signs saying it was for authorised vehicles only. Parks Victoria's grumpy man says no. Grumpy no matter how much I apologised. If I'd had my big girl boots on, I'd have pointed out the lack of signage but my high horse was off chewing grass.

In the end, I harrumphed off over here, delighting in the lack of munzees on the backs of signs meaning that Mr Grumpy Pants probably wouldn't like to know there were caches hidden here (so nerny ner ner - still haven't got the big girl boots on). I inspected two possible entry routes to gz - one long grassy and the other overgrown, and took the latter option given the temperature and slithery-creature risk. A quick find after peering in the right spot. TFTC Coffee and cache!

I caught the tram out here to find this cache... na, just kidding. Couldn't tell you the last time I traveled on a tram.
Enjoyed a walk right around the park this morning and scored a couple of finds on my way, this was the first.
What an amazing "structure" here at GZ. How on earth do you find these locations in the first place?
Cache located quickly and log signed. The zip lock bag is ripped but the log book is none the worse for it. I guess it is nicely protected where it is hidden.
Thanks for the cache in a lovely park, that I should visit more often. Very HappyClappingClan Phoenix

Today I enjoyed a walk around Wattle Park with a mixture of GC and GCA caches. This was the third cache on my list and was an easy find once I got to GZ. No muggles in this part of the park. Thanks for the placement, Coffee and Cache.

After finding Last Minute Hide we noticed that this cache was nearby so off we went. After a delightful walk we arrived at GZ where, after a short hunt, we located the cache container. We were not sure whether there was once a wall here or a load of concrete, rocks and railway iron had been dumped. Either way it provided a good area to secrete a cache.
Cache and contents were in good condition. Thanks Coffee and Cache for the cache and giving us an excuse for a walk on this lovely afternoon.

#GA1004 - 17:50; I was on a caching run around Melbourne collecting a few GCA caches in this area. After a DNF on a nearby Gnome, I made my way down the hill to GZ for this cache and made a quick find and sign to get back on track Rolling Eyes Log signed and then it was off up the hill again to try for a few more. Following a round of golf up the hill, I hooked up with 88andy88 and we found this overlooked little grove.

Happy to sign and return on gorgeous sunny winter's day.

Had previously looked for this one during the Bingo game a few years ago. Since then, I have often thought of it as I drove by Wattle Park. Today, on a drive with L-Plate daughter, we stopped by and walked down to make the search. We had to wait out a few dog walkers, but then moved in under cover and began our search. Given much more caching experience, I made the find quickly today and added my mark; only the fifth finder in almost three years. These GCA caches do become a little unloved, so it was good to give this one some life again.
Thanks for the placement, Coffee and Cache.

I was in the area today so I went looking for a cache or two.

Found it straight away as it was exposed. I re-hid it properly after I had signed the log.

Found this cache once again this evening after a string of DNFs on movables in Wattle Park (presumably moved...) in the hope of picking up a few DragonZone points Smile It still took me a minute to locate it despite previously finding it - a very nice hiding place.

This was the last of 3 of this little cluster of Wattle Park GCA caches for me on this cold, wet and miserable morning. Thankfully, The O3 played nicely and led me straight to the find at 09:00 Smile. A very interesting GZ Very Happy.

Finally got around to this one nearing the end of my quest to clear all the caches within 5k of my house. This just sneaks in. I wanted to pick this one up a couple of weeks ago while frog hunting here but the geokids gave up after 10 frogs and walking about half way around Wattle Park. I stopped in on my travels today. After searching the obvious place first with no luck I checked out a few other likely locations before coming back and finding at the first obvious location. Too many possible hides I suppose. Thanks Coffee and Cache for another nice hide in this lovely park.

Well it's about time we looked for this one!!!!! I remember it being published almost 1 year ago but wasnt able to get out here so left it for "another time soon" Ha! We have been here a few times since but either not with the GPS or with only GC caches in the GPS or only frogs and not this cache (not sure how that happened) .....
Anyway ..... some friends of ours who occasionally cache with us when on holidays with us sms'd us coz a soccer match had been cancelled and wanted to do some "Frogging". We came here as it is half way between our houses.
Our friends daughter's new boyfriend was quite bemused by the whole process lol and we actually took ages to find what was actually an easy find lol!! Too many cooks and all that lol
Took 2 fridge magnets, left soldier and animal

I was feeling sleepy so I wanted to do some caching in a place with a cluster of caches before it got dark. Wattle Park seemed to fit my bill today. 6 finds and 1 DNF made it quite a good run with the rain threatening to pour but thankfully it did not.

First cache of the day. Easy find. I have no idea what the tracks are there for but anyhow, still a sight to see. TFTC Coffee and Cache Smile

07/08/2011 16:43 Found: #591 Looks like these were just dumped here! I assume that was before the area became a park. An easy hide. I see I followed caughtatwork by only a few hours. I recall seeing and riding in one of these trams in Christchurch, NZ. It was painted to suite their tram colour scheme but I knew it was one of our W1's before I saw the plate stating it had been restored in Bendigo/Ballarat (can't recall which). I have fond memories of catching these trams down Glenferrie road in the 70's when I used to attend Swinburne college. We used to pass MLC (Melbourne Ladies College) and the girls used to swarm on board. One day a girl actually smashed a window in her enthusiasm to got on board and ended up covered in broken glass. What on earth are those things doing there? Retaining the wall / bank?
Not to worry, we found the good things in amongst them and then walked up the embankment through the long wet grass back to the car and were were away.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks Coffee and Cache for this cache location here today.

I was looking over the GA website and found this one very close to home so I thought I'd drive in and grab the cache. After a short ride from work I parked in the access road and walked down to GZ. I pretty much new what this park was all about as I have considered joining the "Friends of..." but I wasn't aware of this little stash. The things you discover during your geocaching. Nice spot. I signed the log and headed home. Thanks Coffee and Cache for the history and the cache. Very Happy

I was getting a bit stressed at work in the office, so decided to get out for an hour to walk around the park and find a cache too. Not many people around today despite the fantastic sunshine. Nice easy find, am now de-stressed, time to get back to the office. Thanks to Coffee and Cache for the hide, TNLN. Dancing

Found by Facitman and Mrs Facit at 14:55
We set out for Wattle Park in search of a rather large gnome but took the hint from the hider and planned to grab this cache as well. Surprisingly we found it easier to find this small sistema than the 4.5kg gnome (yes, we weighed him) but as we were logging the find Mrs F spotted an approaching figure. Quickly we realised it was the Gnome's owner gmj3191, after a brief chat we teamed up to find his gnome.
Took Giant Clip
Left mini-rubik's cube
Grabbed Flaggie #5 Swaggie

I had several reasons to visit Wattle Park this afternoon, this cache being one of them.
Setting eyes on my gnome, Gnorman, was another, and he was located very close by.
I parked in the car park and made way to this location vis a GC.com cache by C@C. As I approached GZ I head a voice come from within a tree at GZ "It's a give away when they come straight at you for no apparent reason" or words to that effect. It was Mr and Mrs Facitman who were already in attendance and logging the cache.
I veered off after saying hello to try to find Gnorman, and after that returned to the cache which had been re-hidden by the Facits.
I had an audiobook but it wouldn't fit, it was a TNLN.
Thanks for the cache C&C.

A nice Christmas eve find for the Happy Chappies after an early knock off at work. Beautiful day and a nice walk to GZ. Quirky little use of recycling here! Great stuff.

Now off home to prepare for the dietary onslaught! Smile

Thanks Coffee and Cache... another great highlight to this park.

~13:00 *FTF* King and King with Geoprince

The Solomonfamily have a lot of history with this park and it was a pleasure to hunt for the cache today.

I actually saw the listing not long after it was published last night, at the time I was in SES truck on the way to another job - as I was not driving at the time I lost the argument to go straight to it away (EVS). - It had to wait for today. Actually my SES unit have a lot to do with this location too as we every now and then use the W class trams here for training.

Despite our many years of history with the park we have never noticed this little spot before. A perfect spot for this cache.

Our Sincere thanks to Coffee and Cache for a top cache.

Swapped a clip for a train.
