Description

We have moved this one over to GCA as a virtual as the original GC traditional has disappeared.

From the Heritage listing -

The Heritage listed water tower at the Sunbury Railway Station, built in 1861 on the Melbourne to Bendigo railway line and remains one of few, substantially intact, examples of water towers constructed during the late 19th century to facilitate the operation of steam engines.

It is a standard 20,000-gallon, riveted iron rectangular tank, surmounting an arcaded brick base. The base features a basalt plinth, sills, impost moulding and stringcourse. The arched window openings have been bricked up.
The water tower is also significant, being constructed as part of the 'main trunk lines', Victoria's first railway lines. This period of construction, c1857 ? c1869, were the formative years of railway development in Victoria.

Approximately 50 metres north is a second historic water tower of a later vintage.

Opposite is the Sunbury Railway Station built in 1910 which, to V/Line’s credit, they restored a few years ago maintaining the period style. A lovely garden has been established and maintained on the town side of the station by the Sunbury Garden Club.

To log this cache simply photograph a water tower with yourself or your GPSr.

Have indeed visited this one before. Nicely tucked away in suburbia. Parked on the wrong side today but that was soon sorted.
Very Happy Thanks for this one Team Ladava Smile

GCA Find#127

A wonderful old Water Tower. My ancestors arrived in Melbourne the following year and then shifted Bendigo. Maybe they caught the train. ClappingClan Phoenix

Thanks TEAM LADAVA.

An unusual find while wandering in the area - I had expected this water tower to be a little further from civilisation, but progress is encroaching on the old tower. Requisite photo taken. TFTC.

Wandered towards GZ with busy muggles streaming past. When the coast was clear we moved and grabbed some photos of a lovely old tower. TFTC

Making the most of my new job, grabbing caches in areas rarely visited.
Today I am in Sunbury and this was my target.
A marvelous old structure. Interesting to see daylight through the corroded skin.
A bonus of 1248 days or 3 years, 4 months, 29 days {unloved}.
This qualifies for one of the Summer Scavenger Series.
Thanks for the Virtual cache, Team Ladava.

It is a pity that many of these water towers have been removed and, most likely, sold as scrap. However in our various trips caching we have now come across a number which have been retained, varying in condition from magnificently restored to very much in need of love and attention. Two photos have been added to the Gallery, one of each of the water towers at Sunbury. TFTC.

A trip to Sunbury for an appointment gave me the perfect opportunity to chase a few caches left over from our last visit.

This ws the last stop in town before heading home. I gathered some info for a nearby GC multi then crossed back over to the car and snapped the tower from a spot visited a couple of years ago. I well remember the frustration on the first visit, what with muggles picking up pizza, shopping, transiting etc. A virtual is a much more relaxed "find". Clapping

Thanks Ian and Sandra.

It's been a good morning so far, with a few GC caches under the belt, including two nearby, and this second GCA.

The contrast between the modern and the original features was highlighted even more as I attempted to take the first picture of the water tower and got a screen-full of the Sprinter that was just rolling in.

Every time I come here, the car park is bigger, and the water towers are disappearing amongst the new constructions. I made my way to the upper level of the carpark today for this photo, which is of the newer circular tower, 50m to the north of the older rectangular one. Thanks for the virtual cache!

Don't think this would hold much water anymore. Hardest part of this cache was finding somewhere to park. Thanks.

A huge day of caching that started in the wee hours of the morning and ended at about 9:30pm with one exhausted trail runner. I had agreed to pick up my caching buddy jsmyong55 at a reasonable hour and when we had finished he and he had added another 120 caches or so to his tally. It was a nice way to end our partnership as J is heading back to Malaysia soon. It will be hard to find someone to cache with that can fill his shoes.

I apologise to all the CO’s for using a generic log but after the 130+ caches for the day for me I’m too exhausted to even think of writing an individual log for each. Thanks to each and every one of you.

Found this cache while on a "Sunbury Sunday" geocaching day!
Nice part of the world it is.

Found by Roma and Max.
With few GCA caches to find near home and having reason to make a now rare visit south, we decided to devote our geo searches to mainly that type!
It was a chance to visit some old acquaintances that we enjoyed finding in their former life.
Thank you Ian & Sandra for keeping these venues on a geocaching circuit.
Cheers,
from Romax.

And so the old water tower is reborn as a GCA virtual cache. I remember being here when it was a GC traditional.
I was almost misled by the newer tower nearby, but then decided to look at the GPS and wandered over to the correct one.
It's getting a little bit rusty now and I'm not sure it would hold any water. Nice of the council to leave it there as a memory though.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks Team Ladava for this cache, a GCA virtual cache, and the opporunity to come back and revist the location.

Stopped of on route to try for a couple of nearby caches. I used to zoom past this structure twice a day when I used to get the train to Melbourne, but now I work more often from home and travel the few days into the city by car.

Thanks for the chance to get this virtual.

Right in the middle of a Mall / Railway crossover - and at height! Thought the GPSr might be about to learn to free fall when resting on the balustrade.
