Description

You need to travel to Chinchilla in Southern Queensland to collect information.

Recently we stayed overnight at Chinchilla Weir in our camper trailer and the camp site by the weir has FREE powered sites for campers. This was in July 2011 and there were about 15 vans there on that night. It is a very pleasant place to stay and the fishing is supposed to be very good as the weir is stocked with fish by the local council.

Chinchilla Weir

History

Chinchilla Weir, which was built in 1973, is located on the Condamine River, eight kilometres south of the town of Chinchilla. The weir has the dual purpose of providing supply of irrigation water along the alluvial flats of the Condamine River and of augmenting the water supply to the town of Chinchilla.

Chinchilla Weir is a concrete faced earthfill structure and is the only storage for the Chinchilla Weir Water Supply Scheme.

Uses of Water

Irrigation

Water is supplied from Chinchilla Weir for the irrigation of cereal and melons as well as pasture and fodder crops.

Urban Water Supplies

The town of Chinchilla is supplied from the scheme.

At the co-ordinates listed above, you will see three plaques that were installed about the Opening of the Weir. Answer these questions, one from each plaque; and you can claim a find if you are correct.

1. Name the Chairman of the Shire Council when the weir was constructed???

2. What was the date (Day, Month & Year) of the Opening of the weir???

3.How many outlet valves are there and what diameter are they on the weir???

This must be the third time TG47 and I have stayed here and the 2nd time that we were lucky enough to pull into the last available powered site. What a great place. Thanks for drawing attention to the historical details Sun Toledo. Answers have been sent and accepted by the CO.

Stopped by today as we headed into Chinchilla for the night. Lots of caravans taking advantage of the free camping on offer...and it was only 4.30pm

Gathered the required answers ok and have sent them off to CO.

Thanks for the cache and the reason to stop Sunshine Toledo, have never been here before so always good to check out something new.

We had an overnight stop in Chinchilla and decided to check out the weir while here.
The concept of Minimum Energy Loss (MEL) weirs (developed by late Professor G.R. McKay) are of particular interest to one of us. Very Happy The design was developed to pass large floods with minimum energy loss, hence with minimum upstream flooding.

Not much water here at the moment but there's still quite a number of folk in caravans enjoying the spot. Then we visited GZ and gathered the information for this cache.

Logging with CO's permission.
Thanks for this cache Sunshine Toledo.

Our Big Weekend Out West
What a fantastic little spot this is, after doing some of the local and not so local GC caches we camped here taking advantage of the free powered sites and pitching our tent not to far from this cache. After a big day out yesterday and the work Christmas party Friday night, we were both asleep by 7:30 last night. I WAS wake and out of bed by ten past four this morning so I wandered down and did this cache. A new record for how early in the day I have claimed a find… I had the entire area to myself but while I could see perfectly, my cunning plan of photographing the information for later use failed. My Blackberry tablet however got a nice photo from the GZ and that is attached to this log. (P.S. E-mail to follow)
Took nothing but memories and left nothing but footprints.

Hide, log and container are in good nick.
Thanks for the cache Sunshine Toledo.

"FTF" at 1230. I was going to attempt this one on the 22nd August but things change. In Toowoomba today to visit family and had some time up our sleeves so decided on coming home the long way. Toowoomba Chinchills Jandowae kumbia and home. Chinchilla used to be a rest stop for us in the 80's when we used to travel between Roma or Charleville and Toowoomba. Picked up some lunch in town and arrived at the weir at 1230. Ate this in very pleasant surroundings watching the condamine river flow over the top of the weir. Then a quick visit to GZ and gathered the information. A lot of people here today either having a picnic or boating or just up the road camping. TFTC Sunshine Toledo
