Description

A spiral of sandstone pieces from around Sydney

This cache is the second in a series highlighting the curiosities of the Botanical Gardens.

"Memory is Creation Without End" is a collection of sandstone artifacts from relics of Sydney's past, such as the Pyrmont Bridge, put together by sculptor Kimio Tsuchiya. It sits on what was once the Tarpeian Way, from which sandstone was quarried for some of Sydney's early buildings.

In order to claim this cache you must do two things:

1. Include in your log a photograph of yourself or your GPS with the carved number "1924". There are two possibilities, and

2. Email us with the answer the question: "One of the pieces is not old and is not sandstone. What is the word carved on this piece?"

Logs

This geocache appears to be in a state where the answers cannot be provided so we'll archive it.

What a great little secluded park with unusual curiosities. The GC mystery cache brought us here and on checking GA noticed this virtual. Found the two stones required for question one, but was unable to locate the additional non-sandstone stone required for question two which appears to have gone missing / moved way back in January 2012.

The 2nd part of the logging requirements isn't possible anymore.

Please update the logging requirements or archive this virtual.

Walked past this, and through it, a couple of times in the past and today was time to find the right stones. Added photo to the log.

The Queens birthday weekend had been set aside for a work trip to Sydney. Free time meant geocaching time. With lots of virtual geocaches around the city I decided that would be a good way to spend my time. At each GZ there were plenty of muggles to content with but as most were tourists taking photos I blended in.
This was my last one for the afternoon. I found the 2 dates easily but an empty space for the second part of the cache. As previously mentioned it has been missing for a while. Email sent to CO. TFTC

Found this one after taking the geosobe to an afternoon with Steve Backshall and his "Deadly 60 -Live"
Found the first clue easy but not the second and noted from previous logs that it is missing

Yet another interesting virtual from glenferns. Given that I couldn't find the object required for the second piece of evidence, I was going to await permission from CO before logging the find, but after reading previous logs and noting that CO has been inactive on GCA for almost 3 years, decided to log it as found. 'Top Cache' again glenferns.

I came past here today our way to two GC caches. I actually remember taking a photo here a few years ago, after the Harbour Bridge walk event. But for some reason I didn't log it then.

Today I took the rehired photo for the first task. The item needed for the second task is missing, and from looking at old logs, has been missing for some time. Time the cache notes to be updated?

Anyway, an interesting installation, thanks Rolling EyesVery Happy

We had a team of 3 (myself, phlphotos and a keen muggle) scouring the stone for a "non-sandstone" but we could not find it amongst the stones and parcour apprentices. We thought it might have been a plaque. We hope you accept our find despite this.

wandering around the city and botanical gardens while waiting for my daughters concerts, thankyou

Beautiful day in Sydney and a fantastic collection of bits and pieces. Found some real gems in this lot, thanks for making it a feature cache.

I visited this first on 26 December 2011 and failed to find the final piece. I had been back and came away confused, and rather forgot about it.

At the recent IGD Cross the Coathanger event we walked past it and enquiries resulted in me being shown the depression in the ground where once the final piece had been (I have a photo of this spot!).

Thanks for bringing me here (several times over a couple of years). Interesting artwork.

Argh the last of the Curious Botanicals for me! I do vaguely remember the non-sandstone installation that has since been removed. There is just a hole in the ground where it was. Perhaps it got smashed and unsafe? Anyway Im sure next time Glenferns visit they can think up a suitable replacement question. It was a great walk during the "Cross the Coathanger" event that lead me here, and the series has been a rewarding one.

Cheers Glenferns!

#GA49 - 15:50; Spent ages walking around looking for the piece which didn't fit Exclamation Reviewing earlier logs, I now know it wasn't a trick question to make sure you really did a close inspection of these works of skill and art Clapping TFTC glenferns Very Happy

Indeed a strange collection and a shame these pieces are not to see at their original spots anymore. I took the less used option for the 1924!

I am visiting Sydney from Kyogle NSW, and decided to grab a few GCA caches in the CBD today. What an interesting area - and so close to the city. Really enjoyed this cache. Virtuals can be a lot of fun when it comes to city caching - I think I enjoy them more than searching for containers! Thanks!

Love these old pieces of history. Two guys were doing parkour but there was space for all of us. No idea where the non sandstone piece was, I must be blind. This was an enjoyable location to wander around.

27-May-12
Interesting artefacts! Like others have reported, no sign of the non sandstone!

19-Apr-12
It was hard finding the right piece in the dark and the second piece was impossible, luckily the previous logs explained why.

Thanks.

29-Mar-12
Found during a lunchtime of caching. As others have reported - no sign of any non-sandstone pieces.

04-Feb-12
A group were practising parkour in the area but carefully moved out of our way while we searched. Unfortunately, there were only sandstone pieces to be seen. The second pic is of a slight depressionl with grass missing and a couple of small pieces of thick steel pole poking out of the ground, which makes me think it's been removed.

GCA 454 - 4833. Visited a number of mainly Virtuals and Trigs during some spare time in Sydney over a two day period.

It was interesting looking at all these old pieces - I think I recognise the large round ones - there are same/similar ones on Pyrmont Bridge approaches. As already mentioned the non-sandstone piece appears to be missing - Thanks to glenferns for bringing me here!!

We found this one and quickly took the photo.

But we couldn't finf the item for Question 2!

After conversations with the CO, we believe it is missing!?!

Another spot I'd visited before and always wondered what it was and why. Now I know Very Happy

Amazing little graveyard of history, where the bones of lost buildings have been laid to rest. Thanks for showing us this interesting little location we wouldn't have found by ourselves glenferns.

24-Sep-11
A strange collection of sandstone pieces, which I have looked at previously and wondered what they are about. I had not noticed the "other" piece before though. Thanks for a reason to come and revisit here while we were in the city today.
Pic and email also done as req'd.

Found this cache on the way home from a morning meeting, even found the CO skulking about nearby:)
What a strange array of sculptures/sandstone and other fragments.

07-Sep-11
I was going to log this one yesterday, as I was right there but that is when the battery in the camera decided to give up!
So I came back today, no problem finding the spot as I have spent a lot of time in the past looking at all the bits sandstone (mainly) and trying to figure out what they were in a previous life.
Quite a surprising spot and very popular with the office crowds at lunch time.
