Description

Part of the ICEM series across Australia

This Cache is located in Dandenongand is part of the ICEM series.

I've cached everywhere manis the largest cache series hidden in Australia. It is made up of the locations

made famous by Lucky Star in the song " I've been everywhere" in 1962, lyrics by Geoff Mack.

Dandenong is in the 4th Verse of the song.

I've cached in Ettalong, Dandenong, Woodenbong, Ballarat, Canberra, Milperra, Unanderra,

Captains Flat, Cloncurry, River Murray, Kurri Kurri, Girraween, Terrigal, Fingal, Stockinbingal,

Collaroy, and Narrabeen, Bendigo, Dorrigo, Bangalow, Indooroopilly, Kirribilli, Yeerongpilly,

Wollondilly, dont be silly.

CACHE is a small, contains log book and pen no swaps at this stage, can hold small trackables.

DANDENONG is situated 31 kilometres south-east of Melbourne on the outskirts of the city. The name is thought to be a corruption of an Aboriginal word meaning lofty mountains, and referred to the ranges which overlook the area. The country is flat to undulating and was originally densely forested with red gum.

Dandenong’s population was estimated at over 133,000 in 1995. Industry and manufacturing provide the main employment, with service industries becoming more important. Approximately 40% of Victoria’s manufacturing base is located in and around the City of Greater Dandenong.
The State Government has recently pledged almost $300 million dollars to be invested into the city’s Central Business District. This venture coupled with the enormous amount of immigration to the area, will see Dandenong become the “Second City” to Melbourne in the state of Victoria.

A little more history...

Joseph Hawdon established a pastoral run on Dandenong Creek in 1837, overlanding the cattle from Sydney. Soon a few timber cutters and a police camp were also located there. By 1850, the whole area had been taken up for grazing. Dandenong Creek was first bridged in 1840. A road was made from Melbourne, making Dandenong, by the late 1850s, an important staging post for travellers into Gippsland. It became known as the 'gateway to Gippsland'. A township was surveyed in 1852. Milling of the red gum timber became an important industry, and charcoal burning, tanning, quarrying and brick making also flourished. A stock market was established in 1866.
The Western Port Aboriginal Protectorate Station was located north-east of Dandenong from 1840 to 1844. This area had been an important meeting and ceremonial site for Aboriginal tribes. The Native Police Corps established its headquarters there until its disbandment in 1852. The Police Paddocks were then used for breeding and resting police horses.

By 1861, there were 40 houses in the township housing 193 people. Dandenong Shire was proclaimed in 1873. The Australian Handbook records the progress of the town by 1875.The grandiose Town Hall with clock tower, constructed in 1890, attested to the growing importance of Dandenong. It was the market town for a large rural region supporting dairy farming, grazing and some market gardening. In 1926, a new cattle market was opened close to the town centre, followed by a produce market the next year. Road and railway into Gippsland passed through Dandenong and it was the junction of road and rail into South Gippsland. In 1911, there were 2,824 inhabitants in the area. By 1933, there were 4,270 in the town itself and another 1,204 in the surrounding area. The Victorian Municipal Directory described its development by 1938.

The cattle market became so large that a new site was needed. By 1959, the saleyards had moved to a location south of the town centre and the produce market expanded onto the old site. Each Tuesday, market day, brought hundreds of farmers and their families into the town.
Although Dandenong already had some secondary industries, it retained this country town character until the advent of three large companies in the early 1950s. Heinz, International Harvester and General Motors Holden established factories on the flat land south-east of Dandenong. Many other firms, large and small, followed. The abundant new jobs attracted many workers, especially European migrants. The Housing Commission established the new suburb of Doveton, north of the Princes Highway, to house the rapidly increasing population.
By 1994, the Victorian Municipal Directory described a large retail and commercial centre that had been engulfed by the spread of the metropolitan area.

Dandenong's population was estimated at over 133,000 in 1995. Industry and manufacturing provide the main employment, with service industries becoming more important. Dandenong still retains some of its regional status, attracting shoppers from the country to its large retail complex. Regional police headquarters, Magistrates' Court, large hospital and associated services and TAFE college are located there. It is still at the centre of an extensive transport network, with a busy railway station and bus interchange. The cattle market is to close in 1998. Although still one of the busiest markets in Victoria, it is located on prime real estate close to the centre of Dandenong and is earmarked for redevelopment.
Dandenong has a popular Arts Festival. An historical precinct is centred on three old and significant buildings. Part of the Police Paddocks had been incorporated into Churchill National Park. An obelisk and bronze plaque mark the site of the old barracks.

I had a dnf here many years ago so was hesitant coming back, but saw there were found logs. I annoyingly didn't read those logs as I would've realised earlier I didn't need to jump the kinda hard fence. upon realising there had been a replacement I followed that until I found a small cache. good to finally be cleared of this one

I drive past here nearly every day but either I don't have time to stop or the area is full of muggles. Not so today, only a solitary worker but nowhere near GZ. I checked under the bush where 2y'stassies put the replacement cache but there was no sign of it. Fortunately I carry a few different sized containers and some sheets of stone paper and ziplock bags in my caching bag. Left another replacement. A 200 ml Sistema, tucked behind the bush, tight up against the fence support. I sent you a message but as yet have not received a response. Hoping this is okay with you, it would be good to keep this ICEM cache in the game. Thanks for the cache Daryllm123.

I looked everywhere even in a no. access area due to a fence. the bushes near the bridge didn't see it there. looked under the bridge and nothing. if in fact it is under bridge it's very dangerous and unacessable to public due to council fence. think it might need to be moved to a safer location.

As we own a number of ICEM caches in Tasmania we were looking forward to finding this cache.

We searched without finding anything except for a rather tattered, wet strip of paper with a dated signature, it may have been the temporary log left earlier this year.

We returned to the park where we met a council worker who pointed out the no access to the area beyond the fence signs that have been errected along the fence. We explained about the cache and he said that the council would not allow the cache to be placed under the bridge.

As we enjoy the ICEM series so we have left a replacement log book in a small sistema in the garden bed under a bush close to the base of the bridge. We hope this is OK with the cache owner.

Thanks for placing this ICEM cache Daryllm123. We enjoyed reading the information about Dandenong.

Was pretty chuffed to see anICEM in my old home town so on the way to a meeting checked it out.
A thorough hunt revealed nothing so I was unsure what to do.
I couldn’t let this series and iconic song go so back to the car and my mints were ditched.
An impromptu log book and I placed this at gz.
Hopefully the trolls don’t get this one.
If the original is found, please let me know and I’ll delete this log.

Today I was out with Emily, my 10 week old puppy making sure to find a cache or two on leap day. This was our 2nd cache found 'on the way' to our second event. We had to make a loop around the fence, or rather I did and Emily got carried as her legs are too short. The cache was quickly located and the log signed, then we were on our way into Albert Park for the event there.
Thanks for the cache, and my second one in this series, only about a million to go!

Started off this bike trail day with a GCA cache. Not too much of a struggle to find. The park had nobody in it at this time. TFTC

Thanks

#GA722 - 08:15; In Melbourne with Sol de lune and Albida33 to attend the Melbourne Mega and associated events and activities, as well as a bit of caching of course. After a busy day out on the trail yesterday, it was time to head for home again. We decided to grab this cache to start the day as it was just down the road from our hotel. Found a convenient park and we were soon at GZ where Sdl made the find. Log signed and we were headed north and out of Melbourne. TFTC Daryllm123 Very HappyClan Cerberus

Nice easy find when the park is vacant.
Not so during high activity times.
As Rigger64 has said the cache needs moving as it now behind a reasonably high fence.(terrain about a 3)
Thanks daryllm123

A nice easy find found in the first place i looked
This one Needs to moved as there is now a fence that blocks access to the cache unless you climb over the fence which is not advisable.

[*FTF*] Out on our usual Monday night caching run, this time accompanied by rain and cold weather. We headed south today to clear some caches in the area and some which I have not done. Slowly but surely, we moved east instead of going further down till Pakenham when we made a turn and headed back towards the city. Caching in the cold weather isn't much fun but anywho we still needed to do what's necessary.
I had about 30 finds tonight and we had a few DNF's.

Seeing that no one has found it, we made an attempt to grab this cache today on our caching run. Glad to see that the log is empty as we scribbled our names on the log. TFTC Smile

*FTF* - 5:20 pm. Our big plans for a long caching run out west were squashed by cold weather and, on occasions, driving rain. Jsmyong55 suggested we head south, which we started to do, but eventually headed out east to clean up a few undiscovered caches out that way as far as Pakenham. There were times during the night when we questioned why we were playing this game in the poor weather, but a bag of about 25 caches was pleasing enough given the conditions. We decided to stop early; well at least I did before I pushed J to the limits of hypothermia (or at least a very bad cold). This was the second cache for the night and a nice *FTF* with J.
