Description

See the ruins of our bygone mining history

This cache is located at the remnants of a river dredge, abandoned many years ago based on the tree growth around it.

A fasinating place to explore, it can be reached from a track off the Gladstone Road at approx S41° 0.263' E147° 58.605'

It's only a short 5 minute walk in, or you can 4x4 all the way to the dredge if you like.

Another fascinating piece of history that not many people know about!

Looking at the river nowadays, it's hard to fathom something of this size being able to float in the river!!

(Note: This is not the Dorset Dredge, that is further north and is not legally accessable due to mining operations in the area)

PLEASE TAKE CARE AROUND THE DREDGE

The metal is VERY thin in places, I reccomend staying on the rivet lines and please, supervise any kids or geohounds!

Hi CraigRat,
Had this cache on my to do list and saw it was archived so made sure I had a replacement cache with me.
Actually...the replacement cache and contents are yours as it was formerly the "Catch the cache #1"...which I had picked up near Liena after the game had expired, around 10 yrs ago or so.
Obviously our paths hadn't crossed to enable me to return..but it has now...lol. Btw...the log book from that cache is still in top condition so will post to you if thats ok?
Anyway...back to this cache...yep logbook etc was satched...have brought it back...so a cleanup and all should be ok....maybe another CraigRat replacement down the track...just never know.
I knew this cache would be at a superb location...and it was. The old dredge was really fascinating....way bigger than I'd first thought.
I love visiting old mining sites and history...so many thanks for placing the cache...thoroughly enjoyed...as did "Murder...4paws"
..cheers ST.

best not trying to drive down to this one. I had a fair bit of collateral damage when I got to GZ

After driving up the last fire trail, I was hoping for the same here, but alas I was to be disappointed...the trail is now a little over grown. So I parked near the start and hoofed it in. Arrived at the general area and started the search. The area is fairly well overgrown, however the hint did the trick and that spot was found...and soon after the cache. Unfortunately the log book was soaked and I could only make a mark in it. Had nothing with me, so couldn't help in any maintenance... Sad

An interesting area, and one I'm glad I took the time to wander in to. Photo of log book attached.

Thanks Craigrat....

A lovely day for a stroll in the bush but got a bit warm on the walk out. Struggled to make the find but eventually found the cache inside a stump! Left it where we found it. TFTC

Hi CraigRat
Really enjoyed this cache.
It had been a long time since some-one had walked this track as the cobwebs came thick and fast as I progressed along the track.
Found and logged the cache at 1208hrs. Could only just write in the log as it was very wet.
TFTC and cheers
OldSaint.

Ok, its not an origianl thought, but one of tne great things about geocaching is the tracks it takes you up that you would have otherwise ignored - and here is a prime example. We really enjoyed visiting this piece of history - many thanks for bringing us here. T hermit crab L frog bracelet

We left our car at the suggested parking spot and walked in - an enjoyable short stroll along a good 4WD track but too narrow for our car because of the encroaching trees. On arrival near GZ we were amazed at the size of the former dredge - not big by dredges used in the Tamar or Mersey but very large for the creek in the area. It would have been an interesting sight when in operation. It took a few minutes for our GPS to settle down (cloud, over-hanging trees) but soon the cache was in hand. TFTC CraigRat

Woo Hoo 2nd FTF today, Mr T took Geobike for a cruise and found this cache. Never knew this dredge was here, but have been to the Dorset Dredge years ago. Followed the bushy track to the dredge, made an easy find. Thanks CraigRat for the cache.
