Due to the temporary nature of pens and pencils in my geocaches
PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN WRITING IMPLEMENT!!!
I've Cached Everywhere, Man is the largest cache series hidden in Australia. It is made up of the locations made famous by Lucky Star in the song "I've been everywhere" in 1962, lyrics by Geoff Mack. River Murray is the seventy-ninth place mentioned in the song, at line three in verse four. After eighteen weeks on the road, covering over 15,000 kilometres, I only cached in nine towns mentioned in the song or in the extra verses written for Geocaching Australia, but I cached at lots of places beside the mighty Murray River.
I've cached in Ettalong, Dandenong, Woodenbong, Ballarat,
Canberra, Milperra, Unanderra, Captain's Flat,
Cloncurry, River Murray, Kurri Kurri, Girraween,
Terrigal, Fingal, Stockinbingal, Collaroy and Narrabeen,
Bendigo, Dorrigo, Bangalow, Indooroopilly,
Kirribilli, Yeerongpilly, Wollondilly, don't be silly.
Merbein is a town beside the Murray River outside Mildura, Victoria, in the Sunraysia region of Australia. At the 2006 census, Merbein had a population of 2526.
The area was known as White Cliffs until 1909 when the township was established, the Post Office opening on 16 August 1909. The name was intended to be Merebin, which is the Aboriginal word for "white sandcliffs", but an error made when registering the name corrupted it to Merbein. It is on the Calder Highway between Mildura and the Murray River crossing on the Abbotsford Bridge to Curlwaa.
It is the home of Mildara Wines, which W B Chaffey founded in 1911. The Mildara Blass Winery still stands on the cliffs towering above the Murray River, and is open to visitors for a tour and wine tasting. The CSIRO Plant Research Division has a facility at Merbein focused on the grape and citrus growing industries.
The cache is a drab camo'd 450 ml round screwtop container. Initial contents are logbook, stash note, 2 pencils, pencil sharpener, and a bunch of swaps.
Congratulations to deegees on the First To Find. |

Thanks WanAus.....still a few to go.
After meeting the WanderingMrs at the Wentworth Services Club for a sumptuous $5 lunch after yet another Line Dancing Workshop, we headed into Mildura for a bit of sightseeing.
On the way back to Wentworth the WanderingMrs noticed the 'Historic Marker' sign beside the road on the outskirts of Merbein. She decided to visit it, and I realised it was the signpost to the Cairn commemorating Captain Chas Sturt passing near the Merbein lookout, so I took the opportunity to check on my cache. All was well, everything nice and dry.
Still good to go,
Keith
An unexpected family visit gave us the opportunity to find another of yours in this series. If we had known we could have also saved you some postage!
Thanks Steve and cheers,
from Romax.
On the fourth and final day I dropped the WanderingMrs at the Wentworth Services Club so she could watch the line dancing competition and headed out for four hours of caching.
As I travelled through Merbein I hunted down GC1TYM0 River view by doheng and found a great spot I wouldn't otherwise have visited, with terrific views and a lot of interesting history. I decided to place a cache there as part of this series, so I returned to the geoPajero and made up a cache container for "WanAus 204 - River Murray - Merbein ICEM". I took the container with me, and went for a walk upstream, looking for a good spot to hide it, then tried going back downstream, still without success. I was despairing of finding a safe spot, and eventually found an acceptable place for it not far from River view. The container I had chosen wasn't suitable for my hiding spot, so I then transferred everything into a different container.
Ready to roll, enjoy.
