Description
Frederic Joseph Walker Memorial Fountain
A very strange sculpture indeed!
The Frederic Joseph Walker Memorial Fountain is in Hyde Park, Sydney, Australia is is a magnificent two part memorial sculptured by Gerard Havekas (1925- ), one part is a huge Sydney sandstone sculpture of three figures depicting 'The Labours and Beauty of Pioneering Mankind'. The other part is the fountain which is a very large circular saucer sitting on a pedestal about 600mm above an egg shaped pond and covered in hundreds of handmade coloured ceramic tiles, no two the same. The water spouts about 2 metres vertically and then falls back into the dish which overflows as a curtain of water onto natural round river stones in the pond. The water is blown by the wind giving a sense of restlessness and continuity but there is also a sense of serenity as it is set in a grassy area with a backdrop of shrubs leading many park visitors to sit and relax.
The family of Frederic Joseph Walker donated the memorial to be placed in Hyde Park, Sydney, Australia:
It was opened on 15th February, 1961.
The sculpture’s design was as a result of a competition held by the City of Sydney Council under Lord Mayor Harry F Jensen. One of F. J. Walker’s sons-in-law, Sir William Herbert Northam was, at the time, a Councillor on the City of Sydney Council. The competition was won by Mr. Gerard Havekas, a Dutch sculptor who lives in Sydney having moved to Australia in 1950.

An interesting sculpture in he middle of Hyde Park, very different to the others on offer in this area. We were a bit confused at first as we couldn't see a path leading to the statue, but we braved the long grass to get up close.
We had to read the plaque around the shoulders of a resting hiker who seemed entirely unlikely to move out of the way.
Thanks for the virtual cache.
I was delighted to find this statue of Captain Cook in Hyde Park.

This was an odd looking sculpture. Interesting though all the same. Not really the kind of thing you'd find in my garden. Gathered the appropriate data and moved on to find as many caches as I could before my train.
We really enjoyed all of the memorial and sculptures in these parks and the walk in the cool breeze from Liverpool Street to Mrs Macquarie's Chair was good exercise. TFTC
Stopping here, I soaked up the information required and waited my turn to take a picture of the sculpture. Permission to log. TFTC

Part of our self-guided walking tour through Hyde Park, The Domain and the Botanic Gardens.
From Museum Station it took over 3 hours to get to this cache (yes, not even half way through the park).
A strange sculpture indeed
We took nothing but memories and left nothing but footprints.
The co-ords were good and we found the answers easily enough.
Thanks for the cache Purplepeopleater.

Thanks Purplepeopleater!
Dr THR had been to Hyde Park many times, but this statue never resonated. We were both amazed to see such a strange looking work of art here. The closer we looked the more amazed we were, especially with the fountain. The meaning in this artwork is truly amazing.

For what it's worth, I reckon there is a place in our game for virtual caches and thank goodness Geocaching Australia still allow them. It's just a pity more people don't go for GA caches (although I must number myself as one of these until a few years ago )
Thanks for 'placing' these Purplepeopleater.
(Logged with permission.)
This was the second of the virtuals in Hyde Park we found today. I'd never stopped to actually look at this one before, despite having walked past many times.
Thanks purple peopleeater
A lovely statue, with a history lesson thrown in.
TFTC.
First find for the day. I've seen these before but never read the plaque - thanks Purplepeopleater !
TFTC !!
Thanks for the cache.
The pic was taken at 06.20 this morning in light rain.
I borrowed parking from a film crew nearby to stop and grab the pic, then rushed off to a city gig.
I got to the PC to log this and spotted a log by Blossom* also finding it, but she advised that I had beaten her by several hours.
Yes indeed, Steptoe was first as I didn't stop by until about 3pm today
