Description

Frederic Joseph Walker Memorial Fountain

A very strange sculpture indeed!

The Frederic Joseph Walker Memorial Fountain is in Hyde Park, Sydney, Australia is is a magnificent two part memorial sculptured by Gerard Havekas (1925- ), one part is a huge Sydney sandstone sculpture of three figures depicting 'The Labours and Beauty of Pioneering Mankind'. The other part is the fountain which is a very large circular saucer sitting on a pedestal about 600mm above an egg shaped pond and covered in hundreds of handmade coloured ceramic tiles, no two the same. The water spouts about 2 metres vertically and then falls back into the dish which overflows as a curtain of water onto natural round river stones in the pond. The water is blown by the wind giving a sense of restlessness and continuity but there is also a sense of serenity as it is set in a grassy area with a backdrop of shrubs leading many park visitors to sit and relax.

The family of Frederic Joseph Walker donated the memorial to be placed in Hyde Park, Sydney, Australia:

It was opened on 15th February, 1961.

The sculpture’s design was as a result of a competition held by the City of Sydney Council under Lord Mayor Harry F Jensen. One of F. J. Walker’s sons-in-law, Sir William Herbert Northam was, at the time, a Councillor on the City of Sydney Council. The competition was won by Mr. Gerard Havekas, a Dutch sculptor who lives in Sydney having moved to Australia in 1950.

Down in Sydney City to see the Phantom of the Opera for our 10th anniversary and we (mostly Dad) couldn't resist the urge to grab some virtual caches on the way.

An interesting sculpture in he middle of Hyde Park, very different to the others on offer in this area. We were a bit confused at first as we couldn't see a path leading to the statue, but we braved the long grass to get up close.

We had to read the plaque around the shoulders of a resting hiker who seemed entirely unlikely to move out of the way.

Thanks for the virtual cache.

A great day to search through Hyde park today. After the early morning rain it turned into a great day for city caching.

With my commitments finished, I made my way back to Hyde Park to discover this fountain and sculpture. So many surprises in this park (like the fact that it was once a racecourse and the first game of cricket on Australian soil was played here)

I had a few hours to spare this morning before catching a train to visit 2 of my daughters in The Gong. Got up early to get more caching in.

This was an odd looking sculpture. Interesting though all the same. Not really the kind of thing you'd find in my garden. Gathered the appropriate data and moved on to find as many caches as I could before my train. Smile

This area is fenced off at present, but I was still able to photograph the sculpture and get the answers, which I have sent. TFTC Purplepeopleater.

A glorious day to walk around the park and surrounding city streets. I had walked past this sculpture from a distance many times, but I was glad to make a detour and check it out more closely. TFTC Purplepeopleater

Last day in Sydney of three before flying to Brisbane in the morning. We spent two days in the general area just looking around and finding caches of course. Answers to question sent to the CO.
We really enjoyed all of the memorial and sculptures in these parks and the walk in the cool breeze from Liverpool Street to Mrs Macquarie's Chair was good exercise. TFTC Clan MinotaurVery Happy

The Queens birthday weekend had been set aside for a work trip to Sydney. Free time meant geocaching time. With lots of virtual geocaches around the city I decided that would be a good way to spend my time. At each GZ there were plenty of muggles to content with but as most were tourists taking photos I blended in.
Stopping here, I soaked up the information required and waited my turn to take a picture of the sculpture. Permission to log. TFTC

In the city for an appointment and decided to stay behind to do some Xmas shopping. Well...The shopping bit didn't happen and I went caching instead, which was much more fun! Email sent to CO. TFTC!

When the buses replace the train, that is when you change your path. And when you change your path, you see new things. Like this one. Sometimes I walk through the park, but it is a straight line towards the big fountain and this little fountain was not seen until today. Thanks for bringing me here!

Wandered through Hyde Park on the way to work this morning and checked out the Not so Hidden Hyde #1. It was an amazingly quiet spot at 0710 this morning, with lots of action going on at all points of the compass but not at GZ. Checked the answers and sent them off. Our thanks to the CO for a fun virtual and quick response.
Cheers

716 Km from home.
Part of our self-guided walking tour through Hyde Park, The Domain and the Botanic Gardens.
From Museum Station it took over 3 hours to get to this cache (yes, not even half way through the park).
A strange sculpture indeed
We took nothing but memories and left nothing but footprints.

The co-ords were good and we found the answers easily enough.

Thanks for the cache Purplepeopleater.

Work took me nearby today for a quick job, and I had some time to walk around Hyde Park before I headed back to the office. Quite a nice day to stroll around and grab these 3 from PPE, delays in logging as I kept leaving the sheet of paper in the office. Photos to come as soon as I can work out how to get them off the iPhone or upload, as the old XP computer doesn't recognise it now. Thanks Ross for the hides.

Not a bad piece of art, though a little abstract & wacky! Someone had made an attempt at their own piece of abstract art using a couple of beer bottles on the plaques, so I had to carefully move away some of the smashed glass to get the info I needed.

Thanks Purplepeopleater!

#GA150 - 17:50; Out for an evening walk with the geohoney before heading back to the hotel for a quiet tipple after an entertaining day in Sydney which included a lunchtime cruise on a tall ship. The weather was magnificent and the harbour fantastic as usual. Gathered the required information, although it's a pity some idiot though smashing a bottle on the plaque was a great idea Not Talking An email to the CO got the OK and another one of those interesting nooks you might not otherwise visit gets another log. It's always a pleasure to walk through Hyde Park. The war memorial is amazing and perfect for times of quiet reflection and the statues are stunning. As there aren't very many gc.com caches in downtown Sydney we decided to pick up a few GCA caches as we were at it, which was great as they provided an indepth look into the statues of Hyde Park.

Dr THR had been to Hyde Park many times, but this statue never resonated. We were both amazed to see such a strange looking work of art here. The closer we looked the more amazed we were, especially with the fountain. The meaning in this artwork is truly amazing.

Last of this trio of Hyde Park virtuals for me this morning took me to this very interesting work. It didn't take long to gather the required info and take the pickie at 07:30 before heading off to brekky - well after one more city virtual that is. Wink

For what it's worth, I reckon there is a place in our game for virtual caches and thank goodness Geocaching Australia still allow them. Dancing It's just a pity more people don't go for GA caches (although I must number myself as one of these until a few years ago Embarassed)

Thanks for 'placing' these Purplepeopleater.

Back in Sydney for the week, I decided to grab another GCA Virtual to add to the list. Found this one with no problems, but had to wait a bit for some muggles to leave the area so I could get answers to the required questions. Once I had these, I took the required photo, and went to search for a nearby cache that has elluded me on several occasions. Great virtual cache - thanks heaps!

Last cache of the day before the heavens opened, and I had to shelter under one of those magnificent bay trees.

My head might just be a bit too big in this picture for caching purpose..but hopefully you can still see the status! Had a good time caching in Hyde Park. TFTC! My answers will follow.

This was the second of the virtuals in Hyde Park we found today. I'd never stopped to actually look at this one before, despite having walked past many times.

Thanks purple peopleeater Smile

Today the park was unfenced and the sunbathers were out in force.

A lovely statue, with a history lesson thrown in.

Email sent! When I read 'fountain' I walked straight to the Archibald one then realised I was 70m away from GZ Smile Had never stopped to check its cousin out so thanks! Living caching at home again in the sunshine!

I never knew this fountain was here, sadly it was not going today, but the little water left in made a very good bird bath for all the White Ibis, also known as the Sacred Ibis.
Thanks for the cache.

The pic was taken at 06.20 this morning in light rain.
I borrowed parking from a film crew nearby to stop and grab the pic, then rushed off to a city gig.
I got to the PC to log this and spotted a log by Blossom* also finding it, but she advised that I had beaten her by several hours.

This is a great cache, I'd never noticed this sculpture and fountain before even though I've spent many hours around here. It's quite surprising how many very interesting art works there are around here and in the Botanic Gardens and Domain and area down to Mrs Macquarie's Chair.

Yes indeed, Steptoe was first as I didn't stop by until about 3pm today
