Description
We already have bell towers, beach towers, fire towers, water towers, and clock towers. This cache is for the other towers but not the communnication towers which are very boring and ugly. It is also for the totems you see around the place.A cacher can log multiple times. Happy spotting.
These totems are at Darwin Airport.

I saw these guys at Hardings Paddock Picnic Area after a wander up Mount Goolman. Unusually quiet here today.

I don't know the significance of these totems bit they are situated at the New Horizons Club in Mowbray Tasmania.
New Horizons Tasmania has provided sport, recreational and social opportunities for local people with disability since 1986.

I was caching here and found these totem poles located in a secluded garden near the railway station at Robertson. They were created to represent reconciliation between Indigenous and white Australians. I love this idea for a cache and looking forward to seeing more totem poles in Australia in my travels. Thanks for the cache.

Dropped one geokid off at a friends house and had the other one (and the geodog) with me and a big day of caching planned until breakfast came back to visit in a rapid manner for the kid. Thankfully we had the dog poo bag handy to collect the mess, but I didn't want to walk away empty cache-handed and was able to capture this gang of totems at the Addison Road Community Centre before the geokid insisted on going home and getting some rest.

Found this totem in Victoria Park outside Sydney Uni and across from Cleveland Street. I'd passed this totem so many times in my life as my grandparents lived in Redfern and I'd see it each time we visited. Nice to see that it's still there but I somehow remember it being so much bigger.

We found these colourful totems in Toowoomba. They are located in the park next to the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery in Ruthven Street.
There are quite a number of them and are designed around the Aboriginal theme of Sacred Journey Home. The poles represent the tribes. They start small and as they grow throughout the journey so too do the tribes (and poles).
Thanks Corunnaroad

Carrington Smokestack in Katoomba, NSW
I'm going to try to stretch 'Towers and Totems' for this one . . . because it's the most visible landmark in our part of the world (Blue Mountains of NSW), used to find directions, sometimes the site of climbing expeditions, and certainly no longer a smokestack.
I think it's now a famous 'Blue Mountains Tower' in its own right!
(And, of course, it's also a NSW Department of Lands trig point.)
Here's a shot of the structure in question, the 'Carrington Stack,' with my Tom Tom in the photo.

These totems were carved by Eddie Freeman using a chainsaw.
From the Northern Midlands Council website:
"Three macrocarpa trees planted in the 1930s required to be felled due to poor health were turned to beautiful sculptures depicting various features of Campbell Town.
The tree closest to the Red Bridge has a heritage theme with convicts and soldiers.
The second tree features carvings highlighting the area’s natural and agricultural aspects, including platypus, duck, trout, deer, Tasmanian devil and dragonfly.
The last tree pays tribute to some of the prominent people from Campbell Town’s history; these are Dr Valentine, Harold Gatty and Martin Cash."

First a 'Sisters of Charity' convent and boarding school for girls, and then, after 1974, a site for various enterprises, including a 'Creativity Centre,' this Blue Mountains complex of buildings is now entirely vacant.
Seen from the Great Western Highway, near 'The Edge Cinema,' you first notice the tower, slightly forlorn but still eye-catching.

One of these odd 'statues' at the south end of Leura Mall -- on Olympian Parade -- is the closest thing to a 'totem pole' that I've seen in these parts.
The one on the left in my photo, representing 'Olive Oyl' (Popeye's girlfriend) is constructed just like a totem pole . . .
And behind the cartoon 'totems' is a glorious view of the Jamison Valley.
Across the street is the famous 'Railway Museum' -- so this spot is worth a visit.

Its the shot tower in Melbourne, near Clifton Hill. Only one of 2 left standing in Victoria, it has quite a few interesting features, not least of which, for me, is its original function and the windows!
I was fascinated to read the excellent description of the shot tower here - http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC18BKQ
Apologies for the hasty photography. As far as traditional caches go, this was one of many that 'got away' this weekend.

The Shot Tower near Hobart was built in 1870 to make shot for muskets. Molten lead was dropped through a colander down the centre of the tower and it formed roughly circular pellets that solidified when they hit a tub of cold water at the bottom of the tower.
You can climb the tower if you're game. There are 259 steps circling around the inside of the tower but the steps creak and groan and it all sounds very scary if you're scared of heights at all!

These lovely totem poles are carved platypus totems. They are situated across the road from the Lady Franklin Museum in Lenah Valley in Hobart. We were there a couple of weeks ago to look for a cache (GCQ5Z6) and I spotted the totems and knew a photo of them might come in handy one day!
On 13 January 2012 Sharnie’s tribe logged a set of totem poles in the “Poles of Respect” series created as an art project by three local schools and mentioned that there were at least ten sets of totem poles in the area. We have added as second set in the series, those located at the western end of the Cooee shopping area.

In the Somerset/Cooee area there are ten sets of brightly coloured totem poles (that we know of, there may be more). They are titled the Poles of Respect.
In 2007 students from the three local primary schools worked with resident artist Emily Smith on an art project to show the community the importance of respecting and celebrating our past, our place and our people. The poles have been painted with themes and placed in sets of three in appropriate spots in the community. For example, the poles near the cenotaph in Anzac Park have red poppies and the ones near the surfclub are painted with lifesavers and beach scenes.
The totem poles near the cache (GC31RCK) have been placed where the historic Port Maldon was established on the banks of the Cam River.
