Description

An easy cache in memory of a great Australian!

Mary MacKillop was born in Melbourne in 1842. When she was in Penola she met Julian Tenison Woods and together they opened the first St Joseph's School in 1866.
Mary MacKillop founded the Sisters of St Joseph, who have established schools all over Australia and New Zealand as well as other institutions to help the poor.
The location of the cache is on the site of Mary MacKillop Place, Mount St North Sydney where Mary MacKillop lived and died. She is buried in the Chapel and along with the museum on site, it is a place of pilgrimage for thouands of people - people of faith and people of no faith.
Take time to read about the history of this wonderful woman on her website: www.marymackillop.org.au

Mary MacKilop's famous saying was "Never see a need without doing something about it"
Well..... there was a need, a geochache in her honour, and something has been done about it!
This is the fourth of many caches placed in significant locations of her story.

Mary died on August 8th, 1909.

She was declared Australia’s first Saint in 2012.

I was walking through this area and spotted an apparently unfound cache. As I approached I recognised the spot and remembered the unusual cache container. I found this several years ago, but failed to log it. I think it was 12/11/2017.

However, unless I need a trip to the optometrist, I think the cache has gone missing. I knew what I was looking for, and had a very good look and failed to see it.

I found the GC "version" of this cache almost exactly 6 years ago (how time flies, eh), and have somehow never noticed that it was also listed here. I decided to re-log it, so headed up from Milson's Point on a pleasant autumn evening. Once at GZ it didn't take too long to make the find. TNLNSL TFTC

I ended up in North Sydney after work tonight for an appointment, so before heading back to the train I walked up the hill to find this one. Not sure how I missed it before as I had found the GC incarnation of it quite a while ago. Must have missed the 2 dots on the map being in the same place. Anyway signed it again to make sure. Thanks for the hide.

A long train trip from Lithgow to north Sydney (3.5 hours) and a short walk in the sweltering heat. Lucky I remembered that the arcade from the station went as far as Mount Street so only a short walk in the blazing sun.
Saw the cache straight away but there were so many muggles today that it took a while before i could reach and sign and quickly return the prize.
Thanks for the cache.

This is a dual listed GC.com cache. Odd it has only come on to my GCA radar and GSAK now?! Oh well, here is my log from when I found it a few months ago on gc.com.

Bit windy today! Spotted the creative cache container easily enough, it was more the timing between muggles that made it tricky. Nice area and dedication to a great Australian. Cheers!
