Description

A bit of History...

Building new roads is quite a challenge for today's politicians... It's much easier just to re-brand an old one!
Over the years many of Adelaide's roads have changed name, some more than once...

Below is a list of roads from 1949. What you have to do is find what the current name is and count the number of letters in the current name.
Exclude any road/street/ave/drive/ect. ie. Sir Donald Bradman Drive would be 3+6+7=16

A = Eastwood Tce
B = Irish Harp Rd
C = Tapleys Hill Rd (I know this one still exists but it used to be quite a bit longer)
D = John St
E = Sweetmans Rd
F = Burnside Rd
G = Victoria Tce
H = Rowland Rd (This one has changed a bit over the years!)
I = Wellington Rd
J = Lower North Rd
K = Shierlaw Tce
L = Routledge Rd
M = Outer Harbour Rd
N = Felixstow Rd
O = Nottingham Ave
P = Kircaldy Beach Rd

They are all major roads today, but may not have been back then...
If you get more than one answer use the longest one (longest distance NOT name)

The cache is at:
S 34° 55.[A-B-C+(D*E*F)+G+(H*I)+J*K+(L*M)+N*O-P+8]
E 138° 36.[(A+B)*(C+D+E+F+G)+(H+I)*(J+K)+(L-M-(2*N))-O-P-26]
Getting a good GPS signal at GZ was quite difficult for some reason but the coordinates have been checked on google earth and there is a hint if you get stuck

And the listed coords are for a road that didn't exist in 1949 (well it was no where near as major as it currently is!)
And the mound of dirt that GZ is on was once a tramway many years ago...

And there is a pathtag for FTF!
Good Luck!

This one took some time and lots of research, happy to make the find today.

Thanks Laighside Legends.

Found this cache while caching in the area. TFTC

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Early in 2021 I received an invite from GoosenEgg and Stainless Steel Rat to join them on a caching trip to the Mega in South Australia. As planning got underway some caches with high Favorite points, very old caches, and the On Your Bike Series were listed as "must-dos"

The trip ended up being 10 days of solid and very enjoyable caching with quite a few highlights. The find count for the trip was around the 950 mark when all GCA, Adventure Lab, and GC caches are included. The high point for finds was a day of 335 finds in the one day, which would have been more, but a sudden storm put the end to caching for the day. No one was interested in getting out of the car to find a cache in a downpour in the dark Smile

We were lucky enough to find Gawler Fort Knox, Dustin's Cache, and my favorite for the trip Barossa High (From 21st of January 2001 with the original log book still in place) all in the one day.

Unfortunately, the caching around the mega was beset by bad weather and the day we had put aside for Mount Gambier was scrapped due to a covid case in Mount Gambier on the previous day, so we avoided the area. We all enjoyed the Fishing series and just managed to get the remaining of these before the light failed for the day.

In the end I managed to completed my D/T grid for the first (and possibly the second time) which was my aim for the year, although some of the D/T combinations were not really achievable in Tasmania without a 3 day overnight bush walk.

I worked on this puzzle with stainless steel rat and budgietas. We finally got it solved and corrected coords but the CO needed to replace the cache and we recalculated a new GZ. Today the find was made. TFTC

after much looking at maps and problem solving and messages to CO we finally solved it and even replaced it and this morning we went and found it
thanks for the cache

I replaced the cache today. The tree it was originally in is not there anymore so it is hidden nearby at slightly different coordinates. The puzzle has been adjusted to reflect the change. Please re-calculate the final if you already have coordinates.

super happy to find this one after spending quite a while on researching roads and calculating coordinates. second ever find. Researching which roads were called what was a fun challenge, harder than you'd think but possible with some hard digging. pro tip: consult some old maps for the hard ones! definitely our favourite one so far and wish there were more like on in Adelaide.

The construction of the big expensive bus tunnel is well underway. However it will still be another 12 months or so before it is complete.

As the cache has been disabled for greater than 90 days so to stop it turning up in the search lists we'll archive it. If the owner can confirm it's in place they can reactive the listing by placing an unarchived log against the cache.

Since GZ is going to be turned into a massive road works site in the next few weeks/months I went to remove the cache today. However I couldn't find it. Mad March doesn't seem to treat this cache well. Anyhow, this cache will be offline for at least a year while the expensive tunnel is built. I'll reassess the cache hiding spot once construction is complete.

Solved this one some time ago after stumbling across just the right kind of information. Having already cleaned out this area of Adelaide, I have not had reason to return for a while but today by chance I found myself nearby and decided to remove this one from my to-do list. Nearly walked away with a DNF but spotted the cache at the last minute.

This was a very interesting puzzle as it gave us an insight into one small part of the history of Adelaide. We searched for some time but gradually most of the information cam together from a variety of sources. We were stuck with one piece of data in particular and the CO put us onto the right track. We were very pleased when we got confirmation of teh coordinates and were looking forward to the hunt. We became a little disappointed when the cache went off line for a period but maintenance was completed in time for our visit. Early this morning (mainly to get a parking spot nearby) we headed off to look for this cache. The hint was useful in focussing our search and the cache was soon found and signed. Thanks Laighside Legends for a very enjoyable and informative puzzle and cache.

Finally Very Happy
Nice to get this off the unfound list, although I did make it a driveby and not a walk.
Took a while to locate the cache and was almost about to walk away, but I decided to check somewhere else and finally spotted it.
This is an enjoyable puzzle and a cool hide, and a lovely final GZ. Just a pity that only a handful of us will get to appreciate.
Brought Fritz The Cat along for the visit as I knew he'd appreciate the puzzle too.

Cache has now been replaced. A slightly different hide to the original - see how long it lasts.

I've built a replacement and it's sitting on the front seat of my car. I will endeavour to get it out sometime this week...

No cache yet Ben?? I was right there this morning and could have replaced it.

23-May-14
I couldn't find it either. I'll make a new one and replace it soon.

Working in the city, thought I should finally solve and look for this one.
One of those roads looked quite familiar with Fritz getting lost there last year Razz and the rest were quickly worked out.
A minor problem with sorting Embarassed and I had a dodgy location, but was soon back on the right path, and a "Those coords are good" from the GCA checker.
Walked to GZ in my lunch break, but alas couldn't find anything - and wow, no visits for almost 2 years.
I'll be back (after some consultation).
Cheers Cool

A combined effort from both J's last night had this one solved.

At first, trying to find answers on the Internet was getting us nowhere. It turns out, I already had all the answers on my PC, so it was just a matter of trawling through it all and finding the necessary names. There sure were a few surprises in there!

Today we made our way to the calculated GZ and found the cache almost immediately. The padlocked metal box nearby almost fooled us as a decoy. We then made our way to find another puzzle cache nearby that we've had the corrected coords sitting in GSAK for years.

Thanks Laighside Legends, nice puzzle.

Well I was in the area today looking for a nearby puzzle cache gz so I went and checked on this one. Then as I was walking away I see a familiar face walking towards me... So thanks hgl for showing me where the other cache was! Very Happy

I paved a path to solve this one, starting with my Father-In-Law who was around at the time, although quite small and has spent a lot of time driving around Adelaide. He thought it would be easy and knew a handful straight away, but soon he was getting stumped and we turned to the Internet for the rest of the answers. There was one specific resource (you'll know what I am talking about when you find it) that was very useful but also great fun to look back in time and see what Adelaide was like!

The whole family helped search for the answers and soon the solution was in hand. The was one failed attempt to find the cache (school holidays, way too many muggles near GZ) today was a little quieter and as I approached GZ I was spotted! Great to catch up with Laighside again and to make the find, Definitely recommend this one for a great puzzle!

Finally got this one solved and found and can also claim a GCA FTF!!!! After finding out most of the street names, I had about 6 more street names that I just could not find. After a little help from the cache owner, pointing me in the right directions, I finally got the coordinates that I needed. TFTC took FTF pathtag - thankyou.

(I think the fact that most of the people watching this cache are all at the ozmega, is probably the only reason that I was able to claim the FTF!!!)
