Description

The Archibald Fountain, properly called the J.F. Archibald Memorial Fountain, widely regarded as the finest public fountain in Australia, is located at the Northern end of Hyde Park.

The fountain resulted from a bequest by the founder and editor of The Bulletin, J.F.Archibald, who stipulated in his will that:

"a proportion of his estate should be devoted to the creation of some beautiful bronze symbolic open-air memorial by a French artist, commemorative of Australia and France having fought side by side for the liberties of the world. … such memorial to take the form of an electrically lighted fountain to be placed if possible in the Botanical Gardens Sydney or if not in some suitable place in one or other of the public gardens of Sydney."

Archibald specified that it must be designed by a French artist, both because of his great love of French culture and to commemorate the association of Australia and France in World War I. He imagined its civic design and ornamentation developing to rival his dream city Paris. The artist chosen was François-Léon Sicard.

To claim this cache take a photo of yourself and or GPS in front of the fountain and answer the following questions:

a) When was the fountain unveiled and by whom?

b) What is represented by the figures on the three plinths radiating from the central column? (Some research may be required)

c) Who stands on the middle column of the fountain?

d) Name at least 3 animals that are sculpted into the fountain.

I was looking forward to seeing this fountain today but work was going on behind a very big fence. Answers have been sent to CO. My photo shows my caching teddy Miss Chief near the fence.

Down in Sydney City to see the Phantom of the Opera for our 10th anniversary and we (mostly Dad) couldn't resist the urge to grab some virtual caches on the way.

This fountain had a big old construction fence all the way around it today, but despite being within the designated working hours, there wasn't a lot going on so we were able to grab some shots over and through the fence.

We will be sure to come back at a later date for an unobstructed view of this impressive fountain.

Thanks for the virtual cache.

I think we all know this is an awesome fountain! Although I admit this is the first time (thanks to the questions for which I have sent off the answers) I have thought too much as to its history and what it is all about. Love it! TFTC! Very HappyVery Happy

In Sydney on a business trip (a very scary one; I was having my capability assessed!) and I decided to de-stress with some geocaching. This fountain is super familiar; last time I was in Sydney (uh....I wasn't married and my 10th anniversary is next year so, it's clearly been a while), my boyfriend-at-the-time-future-husband absolutely laughed himself to tears at the projectile vomiting creatures in the fountain. I kept a lid on it this time, a smirk was enough for me, whilst I gathered the data. Answers are imminent. TFTC Purplepeopleeater!

A great day to search through Hyde park today. After the early morning rain it turned into a great day for city caching.

I was in the city today and due to a delay needed to fill in some time. What better way to fill in time then to collect a few GCA caches.

This was the second find of the morning and while I have walked past this fountain a few times before I took some time today to really take in the detail and significance of the elements of this wonderful fountain. I have sent the answers to the CO and logging this cache in the hope that they are satisfactory.

Thanks for an interesting virtual cache, purplepeopleater.

Walk around Hyde Park and a couple of caches.

I had a few hours to spare this morning before catching a train to visit 2 of my daughters in The Gong. Got up early to get more caching in. Very Happy

I really enjoyed finding these virtuals as they took me on a kind of monument/memorial tour of the park. I thought this one was kind of funny how there were this monument of a bunch of Gods and almost right beside it was another larger monument to one God. hahaha

I visited Sydney for the weekend to visit friends and go out to a show. I have walked through the park many times but today was the first time that I made the effort to look at the plaques and fully appreciate this feature of the park. IT was early so not too many people and access to the plaques was quite easy. TFTC Purplepeopleater

Second last day in Sydney of three. Arrived yesterday on the Train from Perth and Fly out to Brisbane tomorrow. Spen our time walking through Hyde Park and surrounds looking for the caches on our list. Managed to get them all with no DNF's. thanks for bringing us to this area as we would not have come to Hyde Park had it not been for geocaching. Staying not far from Hyfde Park and Museum railway station. Answers to questions sent via gca email contact. Required photo attached to log.TFTC Clan MinotaurVery Happy

The Queens birthday weekend had been set aside for a work trip to Sydney. Free time meant geocaching time. With lots of virtual geocaches around the city I decided that would be a good way to spend my time. At each GZ there were plenty of muggles to content with but as most were tourists taking photos I blended in.
I spent a long time trying to read the inscription under the flowing water before noticing a plaque around the front of the fountain. Did a bit of study on this when I got home too. Permission to log. TFTC

Eventually got around to logging this virtual cache. I was supposed to be doing some Xmas shopping but got sidetracked! Nice to now learn what the fountain is all about. Never really looked at it in detail before. Email sent. TFTC!

Even though it was a wet day, the tourists (and the cleaning crew) were out and about. I was here to be part of a flash mob in the gardens but took the opportunity to grab some virtuals before we started. Thanks for the cache Purplepeopleater.

Today was another day by bus, and as such I walked through the park again. Yesterday I logged a different fountain and today I saw this huge one. It's very impressive.

While researching the plinths, I saw that the Wikipedia was vandalized and fixed it in on the way there. CITO Smile

Came and checked out this absolutely sensational fountain in the middle of Hyde Park on the way to work this morning. Was able to walk around a couple of times and check out all the amazing detail. Wow they really knew how to make memorials back then!
Thanks to the CO for the great cache and for the quick response.

Mum and myself popped by this one while in Sydney for a few days. She and myself were very impressed with the fountain. So a quick selfie and we were on our way.
An email was sent to the CO and a quick reply gave "the thumbs up".
Many thanks to PPE for bringing us here.

715 Km from home.
Part of our self-guided walking tour through Hyde Park, The Domain and the Botanic Gardens.
From Museum Station it took over 3 hours to get to this cache (yes, not even half way through the park).
What a fantastic piece of art work. I think I had been here 30 years ago but in the rush of youth didn’t appreciate what was here. Thanks for the reason to revisit this wonderful place.
We took nothing but memories and left nothing but footprints.

The co-ords were good and we found the answers easily enough.

Thanks for the cache Purplepeopleater.

A rare city visit and I recalled PPE had this virtual nearby. On the way, I found two Macquarie statues that I'd not seen before, as a bonus.
At the fountain I squatted and twisted to read each plaque through the water streams. I was joined by others at times who wondered what I was doing and then got interested in the whole theme themselves. I think we all had a bit of fun here. Thanks PPE.

Work took me nearby today for a quick job, and I had some time to walk around Hyde Park before I headed back to the office. Quite a nice day to stroll around and grab these 3 from PPE, delays in logging as I kept leaving the sheet of paper in the office. Photos to come as soon as I can work out how to get them off the iPhone or upload, as the old XP computer doesn't recognise it now. Thanks Ross for the hides.

Had some dramas with this one as one sign that may or may not have been useful was fenced off by tree trimmers, and had to read the info through the falling water, but PPE confirmed my answers.

This was also total find across all geocaching sites #4800!

Well this was a popular spot today, with lots of people out for a stroll & enjoying the sunshine. For question d, I was tempted to add "dog", because of the dog that was swimming in the fountain, and clambering onto the plinths, to fetch the sticks being thrown in there. He was having a lovely time.

Thanks Purplepeopleater!

#GA146 - 09:50; Located this one on a weekend in Sydney with the geohoney. I was on my morning walk and took the opportunity to bag a few of the GCA virtuals sitting at the top of the listing of closest caches on the GPSr when I'm in this part of the world. I was amused by another statue further to the north which I passed on the way to this one, which was adorned with a traffic cone crown. Hope the miscreants were sober when they undertook the coronation, but probably not Think Once at GZ, all of the required information was available with a little effort, although gathering some of it strained the eyesight a little Embarassed Logged with CO OK. It's always a pleasure to walk through Hyde Park. The war memorial is amazing and perfect for times of quiet reflection and the statues are stunning. As there aren't very many gc.com caches in downtown Sydney we decided to pick up a few GCA caches as we were at it, which was great as they provided an indepth look into the statues of Hyde Park.

This statue/fountain is immaculate. It's huge and definitely one that all the brides were using for their wedding photos. Mrs THR was amazed at such amazing artwork.

Second of these Hyde Park virtuals while on my pre-brekky sojourn around here this morning. Despite the guys cleaning the fountain while I was there, I was able to collect the relevant data and take the required pickie at 07:25. Very Happy

Another goodie to highlight the best of what the park has to offer. Clapping

Thanks again Purplepeopleater.

I was visiting Sydney for work, and got my hands on a train pass, so decided to make my way into the CBD to do some GCA caches. I gathered the clues without too much worry. A young couple were having their wedding photos taken in a spot I needed to access, so I waited a few minutes, and the coast was clear.

I've sent all the info to the cache owner. Thanks for an interesting lesson on the fountain and what it means!

Late log (23/10) I sent the CO all the info required a week ago but have not heard back from him. Perhaps he is away, anyway I am logging it now and if there are any problems I am sure the CO will let me know.

Logging with permission Very Happy Last week Zhaoy was let loose in the city by herself while I was at work. Afterwards we met at the fountain and set about getting the info and photos. It was a busy day in Hyde park and a lovely day to be out in the city. We met some brand new cachers at "Jeckyl and Hyde" and then Zhao got some more caches nearby. Been past the Fountain hundreds of times, even taken a look before, but never in such detail Wink

This fountain reminded me of a certain children's book by Pamela Allen that I'll be interested to go back a read now. I didn't see any ducks in the water today, but I did enjoy hearing two groups of musicians trying to out perform each other on opposite sides of the fountain. From the little I heard, it seemed pretty clear that the Beatles cover band was beating the gospel folk group.

Found while in the city. Logged with permission from the CO, as I actually got all the questions right Dancing Nice fountain that gets past many time a day. I wonder if people actually read into the history?? Confused

Had a nice walk around Hyde Park today with Team Canary & bikerbuddy (& his boys) & completed the 3 virtuals. This was the first one visited. I've often stopped to look at this fountain, today was time to actually look at all the element & figure out what they all were.
