Description
The Archibald Fountain, properly called the J.F. Archibald Memorial Fountain, widely regarded as the finest public fountain in Australia, is located at the Northern end of Hyde Park.
The fountain resulted from a bequest by the founder and editor of The Bulletin, J.F.Archibald, who stipulated in his will that:
"a proportion of his estate should be devoted to the creation of some beautiful bronze symbolic open-air memorial by a French artist, commemorative of Australia and France having fought side by side for the liberties of the world. … such memorial to take the form of an electrically lighted fountain to be placed if possible in the Botanical Gardens Sydney or if not in some suitable place in one or other of the public gardens of Sydney."
Archibald specified that it must be designed by a French artist, both because of his great love of French culture and to commemorate the association of Australia and France in World War I. He imagined its civic design and ornamentation developing to rival his dream city Paris. The artist chosen was François-Léon Sicard.
To claim this cache take a photo of yourself and or GPS in front of the fountain and answer the following questions:
a) When was the fountain unveiled and by whom?
b) What is represented by the figures on the three plinths radiating from the central column? (Some research may be required)
c) Who stands on the middle column of the fountain?
d) Name at least 3 animals that are sculpted into the fountain.

This fountain had a big old construction fence all the way around it today, but despite being within the designated working hours, there wasn't a lot going on so we were able to grab some shots over and through the fence.
We will be sure to come back at a later date for an unobstructed view of this impressive fountain.
Thanks for the virtual cache.

This was the second find of the morning and while I have walked past this fountain a few times before I took some time today to really take in the detail and significance of the elements of this wonderful fountain. I have sent the answers to the CO and logging this cache in the hope that they are satisfactory.
Thanks for an interesting virtual cache, purplepeopleater.
GCA find #152
I really enjoyed finding these virtuals as they took me on a kind of monument/memorial tour of the park. I thought this one was kind of funny how there were this monument of a bunch of Gods and almost right beside it was another larger monument to one God. hahaha

Love these sculptures and fountain.
Thanks Purplepeopleater for bring me here and virtual.

I spent a long time trying to read the inscription under the flowing water before noticing a plaque around the front of the fountain. Did a bit of study on this when I got home too. Permission to log. TFTC

While researching the plinths, I saw that the Wikipedia was vandalized and fixed it in on the way there. CITO
Thanks to the CO for the great cache and for the quick response.

An email was sent to the CO and a quick reply gave "the thumbs up".
Many thanks to PPE for bringing us here.
I've walked past this Fountain so many times - nice to grab a Virtual here.

715 Km from home.
Part of our self-guided walking tour through Hyde Park, The Domain and the Botanic Gardens.
From Museum Station it took over 3 hours to get to this cache (yes, not even half way through the park).
What a fantastic piece of art work. I think I had been here 30 years ago but in the rush of youth didn’t appreciate what was here. Thanks for the reason to revisit this wonderful place.
We took nothing but memories and left nothing but footprints.
The co-ords were good and we found the answers easily enough.
Thanks for the cache Purplepeopleater.

Discovering Australia and the World, one hidden treasure at a time.
At the fountain I squatted and twisted to read each plaque through the water streams. I was joined by others at times who wondered what I was doing and then got interested in the whole theme themselves. I think we all had a bit of fun here. Thanks PPE.
Had some dramas with this one as one sign that may or may not have been useful was fenced off by tree trimmers, and had to read the info through the falling water, but PPE confirmed my answers.
This was also total find across all geocaching sites #4800!
Thanks Purplepeopleater!
This statue/fountain is immaculate. It's huge and definitely one that all the brides were using for their wedding photos. Mrs THR was amazed at such amazing artwork.

Another goodie to highlight the best of what the park has to offer.
Thanks again Purplepeopleater.
(Logged with permission.)
I've sent all the info to the cache owner. Thanks for an interesting lesson on the fountain and what it means!
Cheers PPE! Hacking down JustinCBR's Mayorality in Sydney
This was one of several virtuals that we did on Saturday. I've never bothered to stop and read the information at the base of the statues before. Thanks
Had a nice walk around Hyde Park today with Team Canary & bikerbuddy (& his boys) & completed the 3 virtuals. This was the first one visited. I've often stopped to look at this fountain, today was time to actually look at all the element & figure out what they all were.
Thanks purple peopleeater
