Description
This cache is located at the old mail tree on the Cradle Mountain Road. This was found the be the intersection of the VDL Co road and the then new pack track from the Bell Mountain. The tree was used as a drop off point for the mail. It was used by trappers, miners and and stockmen in the area. We are talking in the era of 1910. There is a good description of the mail service and the tree in question in the book A View To Cradle. The book also gives a great description of the area around Cradle Mountain and the people who lived there. This will be an easy find on your way past.

Last time we passed this spot it was mid-winter and we were staying at Cradle Mountain in a cabin. We decided to leave it for the return journey but ended up on a pickup truck as the diesel froze! Today was different story and we made the quick find on a warm sunny day. A nice hide but we had to be careful as the old tree is fragile. TFTC!

Today we decided to venture to cradle mountain via wilmot road. Knowing that this cache was along the way we stopped to see if this one was here, I walked over to the stump and found a hole to get my foot in to boost myself up. When i looked in the top the cache container was sitting there looking at me grabbed it down and signed the log. Then placed it back ion the stump and took a photo with the sign. TFTC

I found the base of this cache on the ground full of water. At that stage I didn't know where the lid was, so I fetched a stool to stand on and stretching as high I could, I felt around the top and located the lid. The log might be up there too, but even on a stool I was not tall enough to reach, and definitely not to see over the edge. Speaking of that/terrain; I see you (the CO) consider this is both a one star terrain and difficulty. If I needed to stand on a stool, there is no way that someone in a wheelchair could reach (your one star terrain). I would suggest that you correct the terrain and difficulty to 2.5. Most people will need to have something to stand on to get the cache.
I dried out the cache and left a new waterproof log in a sealable plastic bag in the cache. Then I placed the cache back on top and placed on that a flat rock, both to hopefully stop the cache falling down again, but also to give it some sun protection. This a GREAT place for a cache and it's nice to keep it going. Only, please give more realistic ratings. I suggest 2.5 for both. TFTC Landy_clan.
Attached photograph of how I found the base.

Stopped whilst coming back from a trip to Cradle Mountain. cache located and log signed. TFTC
Heading home from our long weekend of caching on the West Coast finally got around to picking this one up. Very delayed since we go past this spot a couple of times a year and only just got around to it but better late than never. Quick find TFTC
On the way back from Cradle Mountain we stopped in here after reading the cache description. I had employ a TOTT to get access to the cache, but it was all safe and sound once found. Thanks Landy_Clan.
Stopped on the way to Cradle mountain to grab this cache.
Don't think it is one terrain - I'm not short and I struggled to grab the cache - Maybe 2/3 would be fairer

We spotted this likely cache spot on our way to the Cradle but were too busy concentrating on the moron trying to overtake us and decided to leave this one until the return journey.
Later in the day it turned out to be a very quick stop and stretch.
Thanks Landy_Clan

A quick stop late in the afternoon soon had this in hand. Mrs T was worried that there was a remote camera by the stump but I found there were 2 mini solar panels powering some lights put there for a display by the owners of the property by the stump. I did wonder if the property owners had stuck the spare key to their house in a notch on their property side of the stump without realising there was a cache close by bringing people searching around the stump.

After looking all around the large stump I eventually located the cache (only just within sight) in the spot identified by the hint (which I hadn't read at the time).
Don't usually bother with these type caches but the infuriating driver in a V8 silver Cruiser doing 50-60kmh and braking for ever corner no matter how gentle tried my limits of frustration after following him for some time. Getting off the road and stretching the legs was in order. All the cars that went past were in for a surprise just around the next corner! Cache in good nik.

Found along the way between Strahan and Launceston. This would be the largest mail box I have ever seen. TNLN TFTC.

A quick find on the way to the west coast for the weekend. A top spot to put a cache as even though there is a sign at the tree we wonder how many people see it as they drive past. An information sign for tourists here would be handy too. Thanks.
An interesting part of our history highlighted by this cache. We have driven past her numerous times without noticing it. Thanks for opening our eyes and for the cache.

Heading up to Cradle Mountain, this seemed like the obvious place to stop. We got spotted by a local, who kindly offered us to come up for a cup of tea. TNLN TFTC
Our first GA find! But not our first GA hunt.
This one was straight forward. And a historic element too - thanks

Good stuff Dippy....looks like the hide is muggle proof and there to stay...cheers.
Ripper Dippy, that saves us a trip to see if the cache was still there. It was not our Landy there may be just tourists.
Yay, found it! Wondered if it was there under that rock, no, but that's kind to place a step up! Can't be accused of unsavoury activities with it there! Interesting history and thanks for placing the cache to highlight it, Landy-clan. When we went by this morning, there was a landy parked in front of it...I wondered if it was a cacher, or owner. Passing again this afternoon, I did wonder if I'd find it/if it was still there, but there it was, Thanks!
We will contact and speak with spreyton22 regarding the cache. It is highly possible the tigeress that lives behind the cache got hungry and ate it.
Struggled with this one, and as the previous logs indicated a move, we decided to await confirmation of co-ordinates before having another go!
Top spot with awesome history.

We thought all Tassie tigers were extinct but by the sound of it one lives behind the tree. Glad sirius survived the encounter.
Found and all logged ok. Apparently the nearby land owner wasn't happy with the cache next to the stump and accused us of all sorts of unsavoury activities. Checked the location on way back and the cache was sitting on top of the cement sign in plain view. Removed to a new spot...to be conveyed to the cache owner.
Apparently the P.O. tree had a steel box chained to it where the mail was deposited. The track past the Bull Creek crossing was extremely poor for many years and was only upgraded to Cradle around 1935. Prior to that the first machinery to reach Cradle were 3 Indian motor bikes. A great story can be found in the book.."Three Indians and a Caterpillar" describing the history of transport in this area. TFTEC Landy_Clan...TNL..10 marbles...Cheers.

This is an iconic location on the way to Cradle Mountain. The cache description mentions the official use of the Post Office Tree but, from memory, there was unofficial use of the Post Office Tree until the late 1950s (or possibly the early 1960s). One of us has been a stamp collector from the mid 1950s and one of the recollections was leaving an envelope addressed to home at the Post Office Tree and it arriving about a week later. Recollection of details is not good but we seem to recall that there was a bus service from Wilmot to Cradle Mountain (probably twice a week) and the bus driver would collect any mail left at the Post office Tree and take it to Wilmot where it would be postmarked "Wilmot" and included in the regular mail. The cache was a quick find. TFTC Landy_clan and for reviving the memories.
FTF at 9.30 am. Thanks for the history of the area. Would not have known about it -very interesting. TFTC.
