Description

This cache brings you to the site of Hanson's Farm in Werribee Gorge

The house was built of stone collected on the property. This served the purpose of also clearing the land of rocks for farming. The only remnant of the home is the chimney and the wall foundations.

Nearby is the site of the horse works. A circular track for the horse and nearby a few pieces of the chaffcutter that was driven.

A little further down the slope is a stone wall, evidence of further gathering of stones off the land and the building of a shelter wall for the farmyard.

An oak tree still remains nearby, also several plum trees, a pear, an old mulberry tree and a plane tree. Potatoes were grown up  the hill on the way to picnic point. This was in basalt soil and no doubt was very successful. To the east of this the slope was cleared of stone but was not successful with potatoes as this was glacial soil of low fertility.

Please note no rocks need to be moved to find this cache.

Out today in this area and knew about the farm but not that there was a cache here. Alan and I took the sjort walk out here wearing our masks and soon discovered another well stocked cache and a clean one to boot. Thanks for this one g_ordo ClappingClapping

I found this with caughtatwork and Lady caughtatwork today. caughtatwork came up with the goods as we all looked carefully so we didn't have to move any on the stones in the wall. We eventually found this one when we found a frog cache nearby. I think this is an excellent place to visit even though the walk up hill was a little bit tough. Thanks for this cache here today.

GabGab, Lady caughtatwork and I decided to go gnoming after we ran late at Ballarat yesterday and we had to bypass Ballan on the way home. Today we decided to head back to Ballan to clean up the local movable caches and collect a couple of new ones.
A not too tough walk up the track from the carpark and we were soon at GZ. We despaired at finding the cache with all of the stones and the growth at GHZ but we kept on looking and looking. We came across the cache about 2-3m towards the end of the rock wall than we were looking and it was in a position where NO rocks had to be moved. That's a very nice placement.
The cache has been visited half a dozen times since it was placed by non-geocaching finders who have left their mark in the log book and replaced the cache nicely.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks g_ordo for this cache here. It's been here a long time and for some reason it's taken me over 3 years to get out here and find it. It's a glorious location and it's a pity it doesn't get more finds. This area should be on everyone's find it list.

Found this one at 11:30 while on today's bushwalk around this beautiful area, with the glorious weather conditions not detracting too much from it I might add. Very Happy The find here was probably a little too quick as the stash was sitting there in plain sight.

After signing the log, I replaced it where I'd found it but gave it a bit more cover.

Strangely, this one was found by "Zac" on 9 June this year even though there's no on-line log for it. A muggle perhaps? Think

TNLNSL. Thanks g_ordo.

Was out today with my caching mate SedgwickDave finding as many of the caches in this park as possible. This was a bonus cache, and we had the advantage of having the CO with us to help with the find.

Thanks for the cache Gordon.

The rest of the family were meeting friends for yum cha, but I needed a decent physical challenge for the weekend. One option was to attack another chunk of the Dandenong Meanders; a call from a friend needing help getting her latest furniture purchase to her home in the western suburbs highlighted another possibility: Werribee Gorge.

Headed up the hill onto the Centenary Track, this was the second area on the list. By the time I'd completed my meandering journey among the ruins, they'd yielded no less than three happy finds. This was the second of these... and it had amphibious company.

Found during an (eventually aborted) attempt at the wiindows (sic) trail through the gorge. Came up from the Meikles carpark with a dodgy ankle and while uphills were ok, downhills were a bit awkward. Regardless, had a great day out and found this one before exploring the remains of the farm buildings. Not much left after little more than a hundred years! Found a leapfrog too, but didn't move it on. Thought there might be more finds giving the early popularity of the GC trail..? Thanks.

In Bacchus Marsh for International Earthcache Day, and finding my GC pocket-queries didn't extend this far, I had a chance to target GCA caches instead. The log records seemed to suggest this one was as yet unfound - surely that can't be right?... In any case it was close by and with another Act of Gord close by so I came to see. After struggling to locate the right way on my city-centric car GPS (not helped by some discrepancies in street names between it and OpenStreetMaps...) I managed to find the right way to the parking area, albeit one that seemed to be the long way around, grabbed my camera and headed up the path. Although, it turned out not be be exactly the right path, being some well-worn shortcut across the river gully, but I was soon on the right track. After negotiating the stairs up the hill (argh! another hill!) GZ was soon reached and I started my search. I soon realised the obvious place was not the right one and moved to where the GPS was indicating where I soon spotted something and extracted a Leapfrog, followed by this cache. I spotted the GCA pathtag and yipee! an unmarked log sheet Smile I recorded my visit and swapped the pathtag with one of my own (g_ordo you are most welcome to grab it yourself). TFTC and another GCA FTF Smile
