Description

This cache has been designed, named, located and described by the Smaller Half of Nutwood as she's too young to have her own caching identity. The note is the only contribution by the Larger Half of Nutwood.

This cache is hidden in the home of  Australia's oldest timber span bridge which was built by convicts. There is a lot of interesting history about Tunbridge so I will only tell you a little bit. The bridge crosses the Blackman River. The bridge is a rare example of sandstone and wooden decking. The cache is hidden in a midway stop for people traveling from Launceston to Hobart. Tunbridge is a very"off the main road" town these days, even the post office closed down in 1994! My family and I were on our way to Hobart when I decided that it was time we hid my cache! My dad (nutwood33)  helped me hide this one since he has hidden some caches before. The cache contains various swapables and is a medium clear plastic container. I hope you all enjoy finding my very first cache!

sighend: the smaller half of nutwood.                                                                                       byebye!

Note on land ownership: As far as we can make out from checking The List, the cache is located within the river reserve, however the land  between the river and the railway line is private so a little bit of tact is called for when accessing the cache. It appears that both the Midland Highway and the railway clipped the end off a larger property, located the other side of the highway, which used to have the river for a boundary.

This one has bugged me the last few times I have came past for work so this morning on my way to Richmond I needed to stop and stretch my legs so I made a point of stopping and having a look for this one. Found this one today after our failed attempt previously. TFTC Clan Cerberus

Thanks for the cache nutwood33. RLD4963 and I were on our way to Burnie for a couple of days, and Tunbridge was chosen as one of our stops on the way to stop and look for caches. Was a bit concerned given the previous DNF but this was found easily. Top spot.

Will have to check on the situation at GZ but the last time we were there, there was no need to engage with blackberries to access the cache.

Stopped in on our way to hobart to look for this one but unfortunately could not find it and didn’t wanna battle with the big blackberry stems any longer. TFTC

Unexpectedly found myself in the general area so took a small detour to find this cache. Nice to see that this is a most impressive historical timber bridge has survived the test of time and hasn't fallen victim to 'progress' and been replace with steel and concrete, excellent.. thanks..!!

#GA2838 - 15:35; After an early morning arrival in Devonport, the geohoney and I disembarked from the Spirit of Tasmania II with a bit of time on our hands before we headed to Port Sorell for breakfast with friends. Finally located a bakery in Latrobe after failing to do so in Devonport, but we did find a couple of caches there. After a nice breakfast in our friends' new home, it was time to head off again for Hobart. Following a few more finds we made it to Launceston and then along the Midlands Highway with caching stops in Campbell Town, Ross and now Tunbridge. Parked the geomobile on the opposite side of the bridge and made my way back for the cache. I made this one much harder than I needed as I made my way under the bridge and back, finally locating the cache in the first placed I looked, but obviously not hard enough. All good and log signed before heading off again. TFTC nutwood33 Very HappyClan Cerberus

On the way North for a big caching trip I spotted that this one had been replaced and so we just had to call in on the way South so I could find it.

In the time it took the Goose to turn the car round I had found the cache (where I had looked before) and added my name to the nice clean logbook.

I had a good look at the bridge last time and its great what caching shows you isn't it?

Thanks for the cache.

After sorting through various aspects of the dz trophy points it looked like another rather long day trip was in order. The prime objective being a cache in the southern midlands area then collecting any other available GA caches on the way back home with side road diversions where needed. After days of abysmal cold weather up in the NW, the forecast for today over the midlands was for a frosty start then a generally clear morning.Set off at 8am in very over cast and freezing conditions but further south the skies had cleared for a rather sunny morning. After 2 3/4 hrs driving, gz for the main cache 'C u on the highway' was closing in. Signed the log then headed back north to this cache Timber Span.
The previous visit found the cache was missing so called back in today to replace with permission from the CO. Cache is all snug, covered well but not obvious to the eyes of muggles. There was further evidence of numerous foot prints so expect it has been visited by many geocachers but no one has logged any dnf's...a real bugbear to CO's.
Lets hope it stays put for many years.
While timber span bridges are the norm on logging roads etc, I've never seen one used in a main road. It will probably last around 30 yrs or so...depends on loads I guess.
Many thanks for bringing us here Nutwood33...cheers ST.

Have been sorting through all the various dz trophy points and found that I need to add two more zones to my dz list and selected two available GA caches which fitted the bill. As I had another specialist appointmenttoday in Launnie, a plan was hatched to head up through the Great Lakes road then down the Interlaken road through to Tunbridge then onto Launceston. So as long as the published caches were still available or more importantly found, then the dz requirements should be met.The weather forecast for today was for a sunny day but with severe frosts and some snow likely up in the highlands.Set off at 8.30 am so as not to be too early encountering the frosty areas.Murder(the younger of the canine family who loves a drive) was as keen as, so took up his regular back seat position keeping a keen eye on anything that goes past. My elderly(16.5 yo) canine companion Sirius, stays at home these days keeping his old bones warm in front  of the wood heater....after all, he is 102 y.o. in human years, so has definitely earnt the privilege.Approaching the upper sections of the Great Lakes the frost and snow were soon apparent with very icy conditions, just so glad to be in a 4wd. On the plateau the snow had settled to be around 0.3m deep...a beautiful landscape indeed.
Stopped at the 'Steppes' where the first cache on the list was found then continued onto Tunbridge where I thought this cache 'Timber Span' would be a formality as I hadn't seen the last log.
Saw plenty of fresh foot prints but the ensuing search failed to find the cache. Only one or two spots a regular cache could be so expect it's gone. Hard to believe it was muggled but reckon an animal has dislodged and recent rains washed it away.
Don't think I've been more disappounted in not finding a cache but that's geocaching...many highs and lows.
Many thanks Nutwood for placing the cache...cheers ST.

searched for 10 minutes with past finder but couldn't find it, the CO may want to look in on it

We had to "toddle down" to Oatlands to check out a few windmills (enough said) but filled in a few gaps between the vanes on the way back. Nice bit of history here.
Actually, Tunbridge figures in the Tardis family history too - for rather nefarious reasons. Way back in the 80's our aging car (being totally mistreated by being called upon to cart half a ton of camping gear around the state) finally gave up the ghost on the bypass (yes it was bypassed back then too). So, after a hike to find a public phone in the non-bypassed bit (none of that new fangled mobile stuff back then), followed by a long wait, we got a tow all the way into Oatlands to enjoy another long wait (& an even longer putter back home to Hobart constantly stopping to top up the radiator). Ah, memories! TFTC & M's

Haven't detoured through Tunbridge for years and years and it looks like nothing much has changed here. Mr Beetle made the quick find of this cache at an interesting location. Must have travelled over it many times in the past without realising its historical significance. It is even mentioned and a photograph of it is on the town sign as you approach from the south. Thanks.

After finishing off the apple series we headed up the highway and this is one of the caches we ended up at. Thank you for putting a cache here, because it is a great old bridge and it is not somewhere that we would have looked at closely if there hadn't been a cache here. Tnlnsl TFTC

Yes, Tunbridge is still as quiet as ever.
Where is everyone?
A completely undisturbed wander below the bridge to find the cache and wonder if there was ever water in the river.
Thanks!

Certainly a very "middle of nowhere" kind of town, isn't it? Nice to see that some new caches have been placed since the last time we were down this way. A very interesting bridge, thanks Little Nutwood for the cache! Smile

Hi Miss nutwood! Thanks for placing a ggggrrrrreat cache. I was driving from Hobart to my Mum's place near Burnie and this made a perfect stop to stretch my legs and have a break. It was a very interesting location to place your very nice cache and I enjoyed reading the bit of history, and stopping to have a closer look at it. As I was walking back to the car, I noticed an old man at the back of the house near the bridge and by the time I was to my car he had come out the front. So I had a quick chat and he was friendly, he'd had a very quiet Christmas day, I think he was pleased to see someone he could say hello to. Hope that Santa Claus found you and you had a great Christmas! Thanks for the cache!

We were heading home after being in Hobart for two days. The sun was setting but there was still adequate light as we approached Tunbridge which encouraged us to stop and look for this cache. Accurate coordinates led to a quick find. The cache and contents were in good condition. TFTC nutwood - a very good first hide.

Found this cache during a road trip with Old Saint to find the Octogon Series in Port Sorell. We successfully found all 14 Octogon caches and another 14 or so as a bonus. It was a great and long day from Hobart, leaving at 7am and returning at 10pm.

Collected this cache on the drive up to the North west coast from Hobart. A good hide and good location for the cache

Hi nutwood and nutwood33
An early morning start this morning (0500hrs) leaving home at 0600hrs in order to meet Budgietas in Hobart to travel to Devonport to try and complete the Octogon series by 2y's tassies Octogon Series.
Left Hobart around 0700hrs and this cache was the first that we had not found.
A quick search soon had the cache to hand, the log being signed at 0812hrs. Congratulations "33" on your first hide - well done!
No leeches today, "too much blood, maybe!"
From here, onto the North West Coast to continue our caching - we achieved the objective of the day and I ended up with twenty-nine finds for the day.
Finally arrived back in Huonville at 2330hrs.
Enjoyed the cache, the stone work of the bridge and being able to report another find on a "nutwood" cache. Congrats to red tag and wilco on getting the FTF for this one.
TFTC and cheers
OldSaint.

To the clever nutwood that hid her very first cache - WELL DONE Clapping
You picked a really pretty spot and you did such a great job filling your cache with such awesome toys.
We loved reading what you wrote in the log book. Your writing was very neat but the thing that was best of all was the special things you did for the person who found your cache first!
The bracelet was lovely and the skeleton was very scary but very cool Cool
I found the cache just after 'wilco' so he got to keep them but i was lucky enough to see all of them.
Thank you for the cache. I hope you put another one out. I will have to beat wilco to the next one Razz
from red tag
PS: a funny thing happened I thought I would tell you.... after we found your cache I was playing near the water, wilco called out "don't fall in!' and guess what? .. I fell in! Surprised ... i had very wet feet and very wet trousers for the trip home! LaughingLaughingLaughing

Red tag and I were heading North to Launceston for a weekend of caching fun. This cache was published when we were about an hour North of Tunbridge, but we decided not to return to chase the FTF. On the way back this evening we stopped for the cache and were thrilled to discover an empty logbook in a quality cache container hidden under a beautiful old bridge (they don't make them like that any more!) Thank you for the FTF bracelet - I shall keep that with my other caching momentoes that I have collected over the years Smile
