Description

From our various excursions to the northern island we have come to realise that Tassie cachers have limited opportunities to extend their caching skills. We have very many high quality caches but do not have the number and range of really annoying and pesky hides that the inhabitants of the bigger island enjoy(?)!.

Yes, we mean micro and nano caches on large metallic objects such as artillery pieces, historic machinery, 2D and 3D sculptures. We looked for very small caches on guns, tanks (army style, not water), tractors, windmills and markers welcoming visitors to towns and district. It seemed that every town and area visited had one of these caches and we all know how hard it is to drive past a cache – well, you just cannot bypass an opportunity for a smiley.

Although there are some examples in our great island, there aren’t the number to enable us to really hone our skills. This series of caches will enable the southern islanders to develop their skills, to get their own back on northern islanders for the frustrating cache hunts when touring the other side of the strait and for all to curse the hiders of these caches in Tassie. Hopefully the caches will be placed in locations where a true geocacher just cannot go past without having a look. Not all hides will be diabolical – just a few!

This cache is hidden on a World War I German 7.58cm Leichte Minenwerfer mortar.

Well, as usual I gave up but not aus2, he is getting good at finding these little caches. Only four more finds to complete the series. Thanks 2y'stassies.

Nice easy find.

An early start today and I was here before there was really too much going on. Had a good look at one...but nadda...so walked on a bit more and after doing the usual around these hides, the little cache was in hand. Log signed, and it's now full, and all was good.

A good start to the day and it was off to the next one....and Launceston by night fall. Thanks guys.

we pulled up here in desperate need of the conveniences and consequently put ourselves a few short metres away from this cache. we were not cursing today as miss J had a quick find for us. Another one ticked off. Still got a few to go! TFTC

Wow, at long last I finally get to log this as found. I hadn't even planned on going looking for it today, either, as I'd taken my son to the nearby playground. However, when he wandered over to have a look at the two mortars I figured I'd have another look for it. Wouldn't you know it, I found it within 2 minutes, in the first place I looked. How I missed it every other time I do not know. Of course, not having planned to go caching I had no pen with me, so my son got another trip to the playground so I could sign the log.

Thanks for the challenging cache Smile

We always struggle with these type of caches (i.e. nano's on artillery!) but geowife found quite quickly. TFTC

24-Aug-15
A quick find which is unusual on this type of cache. Found in a lovely park on our way South. TFTC

23-Jun-15
Well, this cache is certainly frustrating me. Confused

I had another attempt to find it today when I took the mini-cacher to the playground with his granddad. Clearly I'm either looking in the wrong spot, or not recognising the cache. I swear I'll find it eventually...

18-Apr-15
Found with the family's help during a pit stop on our return from Smithton. TFTC!

06-Mar-15
Not our first attempt at this one!! This time had a muggles free search and had The cache in hand very quickly. Helps when by luck you search the right one first. Thanks.

Laughing happy to find this one after a DNF at Perth today at a similar structure. No one around today as it was too hot.

I hate these type of caches. That is until I find them.
Cheers from the Posspet Boys

Spent about 20 minutes trying to find this one, in between dodging muggles. In the end the prospect of imminent rain and a number of school aged muggles playing on the nearby play equipment forced me to cut my search short. Next time I'll try not to look for it when school gets out...

31-Oct-14
It took a little while but I stuck with it, a great challenge TFTC

19-May-14
Found on our way home from a weekend of caching in the Hobart and New Norfolk area. First thought, they aren't very big, shouldn't be too hard. So we were wrong and it took a bit longer than we thought, but we got it! TFTC

08-May-14
Found with a group, I've got better eyes than they do. thanks

Curse you 2y'stassies, curse you!! Stopped and had a search during our trip to Hobart but no luck. That makes me 0 you 2 (no luck at Oatlands). We'll be back some day........

Enjoyed the area and cache

20-Jul-13
Very nicely looked after war memorial park. No one around as it was late in the day and starting to get quite cool. After a few minutes poking around the old mortar the cache was found.

02-Jun-13
I'm glad we did this one as a foursome, late at night...despite the ground being very cold. We all were laying on it at some point, feeling every inch of the mortar until finally contact occurred. I don't know if the four made this search quicker or more prolonged - it would hardly seem likely that that was possible. Thanks 2 y's.

02-Jun-13
With four people searching in the dark and at 4 degrees we all wanted a quick find. It still took a while for the cache to be located in a spot where two of us had already looked/felt. Maybe we gave it a "man's look", but Dippy didn't miss it!

02-Jun-13
Looked and looked and looked and then hey presto - Dippy makes the find !! YAY
Thanks for the cache 2y'stassies

Loving the challenge of these nano caches

Hi 2ys

Another Nano on a piece of miltary equipment. Luckily it was not as big as the previous. Made use of the amenties after finding the cache in about 5 minutes. The large group made hiding from muggles easier.

Thanks for the cache

This one needed a bit of a hunt but we got there in the end. Thanks for the cache

We must be getting our eye in... or maybe we just got lucky. A quick nano find by our standards. Thanks for organising such an enjoyable series.

Hi 2y'stassies
Anne and I have finished our three day tour of the West Coast; having stayed at Queenstown, Zeehan and Burnie for two nights, today it was head for the South and home. We also enjoyed visiting the towns of Strahan, Rosebery, Tullah, Waratah and Savage River. Both of us have really enjoyed our sojourn and it is a shame that all good things come to an end. The memories of this trip will be treasured.

This cache was the eleventh on the agenda for today.
Having just found "Sandy's South Esk #1" cache, drove to this one for a look. The walk from where I parked to ground zero was quick and most enjoyable. The park was vacant which made it easy to search this cache out. I didn't need to hone my caching skills on this one as the cache was in the first place that I looked; which was a real "blast." I got real big "bang" out of locating the cache so quickly. Being the second to find this cache was made it an "explosive" experience. The cache was extracted, the log signed and the container replaced as found at 1614hrs. Now off to the next cache find as we head south.

Found five caches in total for day one. Day two, eleven caches found. The third day coffed up nine cache finds and two "Did Not Finds" but I think those two caches maybe missing in action. Day four resulted in sixteen cache finds and today, the final one of the trip, resulted in 12 finds. Total for the trip was 53 cache finds. Happy with that!!
Have had a better time watching Anne's face as she got a better look at the West Coast. She's loved Nelsons Falls, Strahan, the Museum at Zeehan, the falls at Waratah and her visit to Wynyard plus the gear she purchased during retail therapy.
Thanks for the cache and the fun of the find
Cheers OldSaint.
