Description

From our various excursions to the northern island we have come to realise that Tassie cachers have limited opportunities to extend their caching skills. We have very many high quality caches but do not have the number and range of really annoying and pesky hides that the inhabitants of the bigger island enjoy(?)!.

Yes, we mean micro and nano caches on large metallic objects such as artillery pieces, historic machinery, 2D and 3D sculptures. We looked for very small caches on guns, tanks (army style, not water), tractors, windmills and markers welcoming visitors to towns and district. It seemed that every town and area visited had one of these caches and we all know how hard it is to drive past a cache – well, you just cannot bypass an opportunity for a smiley.

Although there are some examples in our great island, there aren’t the number to enable us to really hone our skills. This series of caches will enable the southern islanders to develop their skills, to get their own back on northern islanders for the frustrating cache hunts when touring the other side of the strait and for all to curse the hiders of these caches in Tassie. Hopefully the caches will be placed in locations where a true geocacher just cannot go past without having a look. Not all hides will be diabolical – just a few!

There isn't any information on this gun. Our best guess, given others we have seen, is that it is it was used in the Boer war or possibly early World War I. Enjoy getting to know it in more detail.

It took us quite some time to locate this cache - when the cannon was refurbished, those doing the work must have found the nano, put it aside and replaced it when the cannon was returned. It was a great hide. However, as our time for maintenance is quite limited, we have prioritised our caches and it is time for this one to be archived. Thanks to all you found the cache and to others who looked but didn't find this well concealed nano.

Today i was on my way back north from working in Ross for the day when i though id stop to try and find this cache. i pulled up by the memorial park and noticed the ground zero in the corner of the park, i spent only 5 minutes looking for this cache as i was constrained for time. but unfortunately i could not find this cache. i will have to come back and have another look when i have more time available to examine the area a bit better and hopefully find that i was either blind or looking in the wrong spot.
but anyways thanks for bringing me to this beautiful memorial park. i look forward to completing the curse the hider series. Sad

Searched all over. No goods. I then realised the last log was in 2016?

Hi 2y’stassies
We went to Launceston yesterday to look for the Weary Traveller series and on the way home decided to have a look for this one. After our previous experience at Oatlands (about five visits!) we weren’t feeling too confident and decided that we would have to put a time limit of 15 minutes on the search. Time was nearly up when aus, in her usual bossy manner, demanded that the deer look in a certain area, that aus couldn’t reach herself, but believed was necessary to find this little blitter. Oh! the gloating when deercheetah acknowledged the wisdom of the old. Thanks for another one in this Curse the Hider series.
Hope you are enjoying (and we know you would be) your caching on the big isle. Best wishes from ausandaus2, the big and the little deercheetah.

Going past on one of our caching days out we decided to stop. We almost never find these when we look but today 3rd time is the charm! No cursing the hider this time which makes a nice change tftc

I was travelling North with Gooseandegg and this was our first cache of the day while on our way to and event to say goodbye to Mark Choppers Rule. It was a faster find than we had been thinking with Goose putting his hand on it after a few minutes.

We soon added our names to the log and were heading North again.

Thanks for the cache.

SSR and I made an early start today, heading north to attend the event 'Farewell to Choppersrule and Justafan and family'. We had a cache hit list to tackle and this certainly on that list. After a decent coffee at Mood Food, this was our first stop. Time had got away somehow at it was nearly 9.30am so we were desperate for a quick find. After a quick once over, we then eliminated certain parts so were able to narrow down our search area. I was lucky enough to cache a glimpse of something as I contorted myself around the gun and soon had the cache in hand. We were happy with ourselves for a relatively quick find. For me, it was great to tick of another Curse the Hider (without actually cursing the hider). TFTC

At last after at least four tries I have found this pesky nano. I was beginning to think it was not there but it WAS! I found it in under 5 minutes today.

Oh, really. Another one. But I found it though. Yay.
Cheers from the Posspet BOys

A quiet day with only one local to chat to as I checked out the old structure at the gz. Found the tricky little hiding spot by a process of elimination. Gave the security cameras a wave on the way out to the gate. TFTC

Fun find. Our first nano, so we weren't really sure what we were looking for and nearly gave up twice!

This curse was lifted quickly. I don't recommend jumping the fence - use the intended entry point!

A relatively quick find, thankfully. Didn't have to curse the hider today. TFTC.

I'm pleased I didn't read the logs before coming to this one otherwise they may have put me off. When I got there, I decided that this one should be easier than others as the gun seemed smaller and with less possible hidey holes. A reasonably systematic search seemed to prove this theory correct (OR just lucky for once). Thanks 2 y'stassies.

I was lucky enough to have my hands on the cache almost immediately - it took me far longer to roll the log up again!
Thanks.

Found on our way home from the event. A well maintained park. TFTC

Well it took a while, and we were stared at by passing locals and passing loacal's dogs, but we were triumphant!
Thanks 2YTs

Found with the aid of some extra information. Hopefully this will get our eye in to tackle the rest in this series. Thanks 2y's tassies.

Can't believe how quickly we located this one. Just as well as the area was busy as school had just got out. Thanks.

A nice easy find thanks to Budgie. My legs aren't built for stepping over the fence and I was going to walk around but he soon had the cache in hand. Thanks for the cache

After our failed attempt at Railton we approached this cannon with some trepidation. Thankfully this time three pairs of hand made short work of it. Thanks 2y'stassies for organising such a challenging series. Two down, many hours of frustration to go!

Found it at 12.15pm. Thanks. Brick Wall

Hi 2ys. Drove to Launceston today to drop geo wife (and one child) to a craft "event". One the way up and back we attempted 3 of the curse the hider series. One in Ross, one in oatlands and one in Perth. Found two of the caches (oatlands and Perth) and a dnf on Ross, not due to muggles, but due to poor searching ability of the 6 of us. Anyway thanks you for the caches as they broke up the trip perfectly. Very Happy

Hi 2y'stassies
Anne and I have finished our three day tour of the West Coast; having stayed at Queenstown, Zeehan and Burnie for two nights, today it was head for the South and home. We also enjoyed visiting the towns of Strahan, Rosebery, Tullah, Waratah and Savage River. Both of us have really enjoyed our sojourn and it is a shame that all good things come to an end. The memories of this trip will be treasured.

This cache was number twelve and the final find on the agenda for today.
Having just found "Curse of the Hider - Longford" cache, drove to this one for a search. Again, the park was vacant which made it easy to search this cache out. However, the speed with which I found the one at Longford was not replicated on this monster. Searched here and there but didn't see the cache anywhere! Looked in one hole and thought I'd found it. Couldn't get it out with my fingers, so used a pair of tweezers but only extracted a rusty nail. Started feeling around other spots on the blaster; felt something move and drop. Looked on the ground for it but nothing to be seen except small pebbles, had I dislodged the cache and had I lost it? Looked in and there it was clinging to a spot where I could now see it. The cache was extracted, the log signed and the container replaced back from whence it had fallen at 1705hrs. Now off home satisfied with a good days caching.

Found five caches in total for day one. Day two, eleven caches found. The third day coffed up nine cache finds and two "Did Not Finds" but I think those two caches maybe missing in action. Day four resulted in sixteen cache finds and today, the final one of the trip, resulted in 12 finds. Total for the trip was 53 cache finds. Happy with that!!
Have had a better time watching Anne's face as she got a better look at the West Coast. She's loved Nelsons Falls, Strahan, the Museum at Zeehan, the falls at Waratah and her visit to Wynyard plus the gear she purchased during retail therapy.
Thanks for the cache and the fun of the find
Cheers OldSaint.

Found on the way back from Launceston, it was our fourth find in this series. It only took a couple of minutes to locate - We were definitely getting our eye in by this stage!

Woo Hoo Very Happy *FTF* Very Happy @18:16hrs. Are your ears burning? Cause we have been cursing. We just spent 10 mins getting close and personal with this cannon Brick Wall nanos, Trekkers and cannons are not a good mix, but we came away jubilant. Thanks 2y'stassies for the challenge and for the cache.
