Description
Hellyer Gorge is a beautiful place in the Tasmanian rainforest. Hard to believe that the road through the gorge used to be the main road to the west coast. Now it's a tourist route but still well travelled.
The picnic area has a shelter, several tables and public facilities. There are several easy walks in the area, so break your trip, go for a stroll and find a cache or two.
The cache container is a regular sized screwtop container that contains a logbook, pen and some small swaps. A suprising number of cars pulled up while we wandering about so patience may be required while you wait for an opportunity to grab the cache.

I've not been through Hellyer Gorge for just over 30 years. It was drizzly but I had 3 caches to find and this was one of them. A quick find with stainless steel rat, very close to the car. TFTC
#GA4072 - 14:20; Today's mission was to collect finds in the four remaining dragonZones on the Tasmanian 'mainland', so I headed off early for Rosebery, stopping off for a catch-up with a fellow cacher in Ulverstone on the outward journey. On the homeward leg now and after stops in Tullah and Waratah I was winding my way through Hellyer Gorge. A nice quick find and sign, before heading along the track for a nearby GC cache. We were heading home from our west coast post-Christmas sojourn (as some unfortunates had to work!)and stopped here for lunch. Finding this cache not far away was a bonus. TFTC
We had planned to come North to visit family in Launceston over the weekend but decided to take the long way detouring via Sisters Creek and Tullah to collect 2 dragon zones we did not have. Along the way we targeted a few caches and this was one of them. Boy this took a while. The gpsr was all over the show and so many places that matched the hint but got there in the end. There were so many caches we went past as time was limited, but it gives us a reason to return. We travelled over 700 km and are still not home. TFTC

Patience certainly was required to grab this one as a caravan was parked nearby. Then another couple arrived & setup their tent yonder. No problem though as we'd planned to spend the night here in our motorhome. So we made do with the nearby finds and "slept on it" hoping they would leave before us in the morning. Rats, we're quicker with our breakfast than they are. A short stroll with furtive checks of the GPSr however proved that things were sufficiently private at GZ to do the deed. Nice recycling job sharnie's tribe!

What's that Beatles song? A Long and Winding Road....yep, and that's what it was. But a lot of fun getting here. Once at GZ, it took a good 15 minutes to spy the cache, and at once stage I thought I was going back up the road empty handed. However, I kept at it and eventually the cache was in hand....and I have no idea how I could have missed it. Suffice to all was good and my name is in the log book...which is slightly damp, but still ok. The second of these caches for the day.....
Thanks again ST....loved the area....

Hi Sharnies
From the fun finding the cache across the road, finding this cache was a lot easier and didn't take anywhere near as long to get to.
Sainted this one at 1450hrs.
TFTC and cheers

Quick easy find whilst stopping to grab the gc cache also in the area. not a single camper to b seen today which was also somewhat of a surprise as this is an extremely popular campervan spot
Quick easy find with muggles seated close by. The muggles from the UK seemed very interested in geocaching in general. After a lengthy conversation re travel etc I was on my way, having met two lovely people. The cache is in top nick...all safely sealed. Many thanks FTC sharnie's tribe...cheers.

Found this cache as part of my and Geo Son E's caching and soccer trip to Burnie. Geo Kid E was playing in a regional cup in Burnie, so we left early and had a great time caching across to Marrawah and back through Burnie and Ulverstone areas.
Thank you for the cache

Camped here over night on a trip to Tullah for the weekend. A quick find and the new container should do the job! Thanks.
Left a Groundspeak Australian micro geocoin here. We didn't realise it was a GA cache until we were a long way down the windy road. Not to worry. If the next geocacher is able to move it onto a Groundspeak GC cache and log it, we would appreciate it. Thanks for the great spot and the terrific cache container. No nibbling on this one.

Previous logs listed the cache container as having been nibbled upon so we've replaced it with one that should present the local wildlife with a bit of a challenge! New logbook to suit the new container.
After staying the night at Smithton we headed off on the geobike to find the caches published since our last visit, and this was one of them. The gorge is a lovely spot and this cache gave us an excuse to return. TFTC

With a gap for today in our GA calendar, we decided to make an early morning trip to look for this cache. It was lovely down in Hellyer Gorge with bright sunshine filtering through the majestic trees. Surprisingly there wasn't anyone around - you can normally count on a camper or two using the area overnight. Accurate coordinates and the hint led to a quick find but didn't prepare us for the surprise. It would appear that a rodent had taken exception to the container and had gnawed four holes of various sizes into the base and lid. A photo of a section of the container has been aded to the Gallery. The contents were still in good order but it is unclear if the rodent has lost interest or will be coming back for another meal of constipating plastic. When we opened the logbook we saw that we were the first to sign the book - hence we will claim FTF at 7:20am. Thanks sharnie's tribe for the cache and for bringing us back to this lovely location.
Sorry, 2y'stassies, but you must have looked at the wrong end of the log-book. Found on Monday morning on the way to Cradle Mountain in company of deegees, so we are entitled to the FTF. The rodents had had a good gnaw at the container, but had made only 3 holes. Also had gnawed through the bag holding the log-book. Replaced the bag, but did not replace container as didn't have a spare. Was my fourth cache, and first FTF. TNLN (other than a new bag for the log-book). SL Pretty place to stop to break up the drive to Cradle Mountain. TFTC
