Description

At the Memorial to the SS Mildura

On March 8th 1907 the 2,217 ton Mildura left the Kimberley port of Wyndham loaded with 498 cattle, bound for Fremantle. Four days later confronting a looming cyclone, she struck the reef off the point of North West Cape. Five of the crew and two of the passengers set out for Onslow in one of the ship’s boats – they, and the remainder of the party on board were rescued by the SS Burrumbeet. The cattle were turned loose to swim for shore less than a kilometre away but most drowned in the attempt. The Mildura was not badly damaged when wrecked and was subsequently the focus of a major salvage operation and later the hull was used for bombing practice in World War II.

The timing of the event proved crucial in persuading the State Government to add North West Cape to its list of priority location for light house construction. The outcome for the ship’s captain was not so positive – despite (or perhaps because of) having safely passed the cape on 68 other occasions he was found guilty of neglect and his masters certificate suspended for 3 months.

The cache is a medium sized black painted plastic screw top pill container.

Have spent the last 4 days working away from home having just spent 2 and a half days between Broome and Derby. I managed to grab a several caches in Broome and then up to Derby where i grabbed only 2 caches 1 GA and 1 GC due to only a quick stopover in Derby and found both of them as it was getting dark and after dark. It was a long drive back to Broome then having to wait an extra 2 hours due to flight delays tuesday night. Got back home at midnight then back out to the airport at 0830 wednesday for another flight to Learmonth. Spent some time working out on the RAAF base with contractors inspecting runways and taxiways. Managed to finish early today so grabbed a few caches in town and shot out here to grab the lighthouse and this cache in the middle of the day. Beautiful coast line up here. Never been here before. Thanks for the cache and for bringing me here ILUVTREKKING. I replaced the container with a slightly more bigger unpainted fruit container after eating the fruit the last 2 nights. So should be good for a while now. DancingDancing

The Big Western Australia trip in 2018. Day 26. A day spent exploring Cape Range National Park. Yardie Creek was too high to cross and the trip up the range was dramatic !

Compared to the others today, this was a nice simple drive by without any problems.

Thanks
