Description

Bushranger Series - Ned Kelly Avenel

The Kelly Family at Avenel

This is where the Kelly family moved after they sold their Beveridge home.  Avenel is also the town where John 'Red' Kelly died.  Ned, only a 12 year old boy, registered the death himself.  You can visit the grave in Avenel cemetery.

Ned Kelly and his family moved to Avenel when Ned was about 8 years old. They lived here for about four years. Sadly, Ned’s father, Red, passed away here, shortly after which the family moved north to be closer to Ned’s mother Ellen’s family in Greta.

Bushrangers.

Over 2,000 bushrangers are estimated to have roamed the Australian countryside, beginning with the convict bolters and drawing to a close after Ned Kelly's last stand at Glenrowan.

Bushrangers were originally escaped convicts who had the survival skills necessary to use the Australian bush as a refuge to hide from the authorities. By the 1820s, the term "bushranger" had evolved to refer to those who abandoned social rights and privileges to take up "robbery under arms" as a way of life, using the bush as their base.

Bushranging thrived during the gold rush years of the 1850s and 1860s when the likes of Ben HallFrank Gardiner and John Gilbert led notorious gangs in the country districts of New South Wales. These Wild Colonial Boys typically robbed small-town banks and coach services.

In other infamous cases, such as that of Dan Morgan, the Clarke brothers, and Australia's best-known bushranger, Ned Kelly, numerous policemen were murdered.

The number of bushrangers declined due to better policing and improvements in rail transport and communication technology, such as telegraphy. Kelly's capture and execution in 1880 effectively represented the end of the bushranging era.

2 day trip to Melbourne to drop a car off and stopped off for this one on the way past. Took a couple of minutes to make the find, however all was good and my initials were soon in the log.

Thanks BB.....another on in the series crossed off.

#GA3851 - 14:10; Headed home solo after dropping the geoson in Melbourne to collect a car. Decided a bit of caching as I head north is in order, after collecting some in Seymour I stopped to try for this one in Avenel. Made my way to GZ and parked across the road. The likely hiding place seemed fairly obvious, but despite my best efforts, couldn't locate the cache. After a good 15 minutes of searching, I checked the logs and adjusted my approach. Eureka! Located the cache safely tucked away in a spot I'm sure I'd checked earlier, but no matter, I managed to add my name to the log today. TFTC Black Bunny Very HappyClan Cerberus

After disembarking from the Spirit of Tasmania this morning we headed north, only stopping to grab a few random GC caches and any GCA that were not too far off the highway.
This one took a while to locate and after an unsuccessful search we tried objects further afield, but with no luck there either we returned to our original 'suspect' and Mr Beetle found the container in no time at all this time.
Think what foiled us a bit was the container size. This one was way smaller than we were expecting.
Remember visiting this cemetery before caching and Ned Kelly's fathers grave was part of that search. Did wonder if that cache is still active.
Thanks, left with a nice peppery smell on our hands too.

Today we returned to this cache, one we had visited unsuccessfully nearly eight months ago, armed with the new coordinates and the spoiler photo. Mrs Y'stassie hopped out of the car, walked to the tree, poked the litter that filled the tree hollows and found a cache. After signing the log she checked the GPS and found it indicated we were at GZ. It was found about hip high.

Thanks for this cache in your bushranger series Black Bunny. It is always interesting to read the information provided on the cache page.

Found the sign but nothing in the large tree next to it. These trees have tags on them so would be checked regularly. I can't find anything.

We made a slight detour on our way to Seymour today to look for this cache - no luck after an extended search. The published coordinates had us in the cemetery 12m from anywhere where we could locate a cache at shoulder height. We searched the trees in the cemetery and some outside but found nothing. We hope this one can be checked as we really enjoy finding your Bushranger series.
