Description
When Police and Bushrangers meet
When Bushrangers and Police Meet.
The deadly combination of Johnny Gilbert, Ben Hall and John Dunn held up a mail coach between Gundagai and Jugiong and in the ensuing melee shot and killed the 32-year-old Edmund Parry. The battle took place five kilometres from Jugiong.
The death of Parry was the culmination of a very busy day for Hall and his gang. By the time the mail coach had arrived they had held up nearly 60 people in a single day - literally everyone who was travelling along the road.
When the bushrangers tried to hold up the mail coach both Parry and Inspector O’Neil, who were riding as armed escorts, returned fire and Parry was killed. O’Neil survived because he ran out of bullets and had to surrender.
Johnny Gilbert was killed by police in 1865 and is buried at Binalong.

Bushrangers.
Over 2,000 bushrangers are estimated to have roamed the Australian countryside, beginning with the convict bolters and drawing to a close after Ned Kelly's last stand at Glenrowan.
Bushrangers were originally escaped convicts who had the survival skills necessary to use the Australian bush as a refuge to hide from the authorities. By the 1820s, the term "bushranger" had evolved to refer to those who abandoned social rights and privileges to take up "robbery under arms" as a way of life, using the bush as their base.
Bushranging thrived during the gold rush years of the 1850s and 1860s when the likes of Ben Hall, Frank Gardiner and John Gilbert led notorious gangs in the country districts of New South Wales. These Wild Colonial Boys typically robbed small-town banks and coach services.
In other infamous cases, such as that of Dan Morgan, the Clarke brothers, and Australia's best-known bushranger, Ned Kelly, numerous policemen were murdered.
The number of bushrangers declined due to better policing and improvements in rail transport and communication technology, such as telegraphy. Kelly's capture and execution in 1880 effectively represented the end of the bushranging era.

Pretty special one for me for a few reasons.
Mainly John Dunn is my 1st cousin 3x removed.
So mixed interest on the death of a policeman.
The cache was a quick find.

Cache and contents in good condition.
Many thanks Black Bunny your cache placement here, great series.
Umm… what area can I attack this time because I’m very quickly running out of caches to find. After taking a look at the map, I decided on finding the caches between Gundagai and Yass along the Hume HWY. Yes, HWY driving can be quite boring but when the trip is broken up to find caches it makes it a lot more FUN. I also needed five finds for the GCA 2020 February challenge. A few history lessons, unique locations and many different types of hides made the day very enjoyable. The GCA moveable caches I found today have been moved to the above coordinates ready for the next finder. I ended up with 16 finds for the day which is made up of 10 GC and 6 GCA finds. TB visit on all caches. I would like to thank all CO’s of the caches I found and for allowing them to bring joy to me and the rest of the caching community. TFTC’s

This cache might come in handy for us in the summer game.
Thanks Black Bunny.
Accurate coordinates lead to a quick find of a large, well camo'ed container with a nice collection of swoppable objects. It is always a pleasure to find a large sized, well stocked cache. A pity it has not had many visits as kids would love the swops.
Cache container and contents were in very good condition. The safe hide should ensure that this cache has a long life.
Thanks for the cache Black Bunny and for an enjoyable caching experience.
Thanks again BB....haven't stopped here for quite a while.
