Description

When Police and Bushrangers meet

When Bushrangers and Police Meet.

The deadly combination of Johnny Gilbert, Ben Hall and John Dunn held up a mail coach between Gundagai and Jugiong and in the ensuing melee shot and killed the 32-year-old Edmund Parry. The battle took place five kilometres from Jugiong.

The death of Parry was the culmination of a very busy day for Hall and his gang. By the time the mail coach had arrived they had held up nearly 60 people in a single day - literally everyone who was travelling along the road.

When the bushrangers tried to hold up the mail coach both Parry and Inspector O’Neil, who were riding as armed escorts, returned fire and Parry was killed. O’Neil survived because he ran out of bullets and had to surrender.

Johnny Gilbert was killed by police in 1865 and is buried at Binalong.

Bushrangers.

Over 2,000 bushrangers are estimated to have roamed the Australian countryside, beginning with the convict bolters and drawing to a close after Ned Kelly's last stand at Glenrowan.

Bushrangers were originally escaped convicts who had the survival skills necessary to use the Australian bush as a refuge to hide from the authorities. By the 1820s, the term "bushranger" had evolved to refer to those who abandoned social rights and privileges to take up "robbery under arms" as a way of life, using the bush as their base.

Bushranging thrived during the gold rush years of the 1850s and 1860s when the likes of Ben HallFrank Gardiner and John Gilbert led notorious gangs in the country districts of New South Wales. These Wild Colonial Boys typically robbed small-town banks and coach services.

In other infamous cases, such as that of Dan Morgan, the Clarke brothers, and Australia's best-known bushranger, Ned Kelly, numerous policemen were murdered.

The number of bushrangers declined due to better policing and improvements in rail transport and communication technology, such as telegraphy. Kelly's capture and execution in 1880 effectively represented the end of the bushranging era.

With the country going into lockdown & meat / chicken / rice & dunny paper Evil or Very MadTwisted Evil in short supply I figured it was time to go for a caching run & drop of some movables & complete some caches, needed to clear my head as job insecurity is of real concern & I had enough of the bullshit – so cache on – this was the 1st 1 completed after dropping off the movables. I have been here many a year ago to complete a GC cache so it was nice to return. Many thanks for the history lesson - TFTC / TFTH / SL Clan GriffinClan Griffin

Big Grin 02/02/2020 Souvenir Day Trip! Big Grin
Umm… what area can I attack this time because I’m very quickly running out of caches to find. After taking a look at the map, I decided on finding the caches between Gundagai and Yass along the Hume HWY. Yes, HWY driving can be quite boring but when the trip is broken up to find caches it makes it a lot more FUN. Big Grin I also needed five finds for the GCA 2020 February challenge. A few history lessons, unique locations and many different types of hides made the day very enjoyable. The GCA moveable caches I found today have been moved to the above coordinates ready for the next finder. I ended up with 16 finds for the day which is made up of 10 GC and 6 GCA finds. Big Grin TB visit on all caches. I would like to thank all CO’s of the caches I found and for allowing them to bring joy to me and the rest of the caching community. Big Grin TFTC’s Big Grin

Pa and I have had a wonderful couple of weeks away starting with the Tumut Invasion which was lots of fun with fellow cachers from ACT and the Goulburn region. We continued on through Omeo, Licola and the Howitt High Plains before dropping down to Mansfield and Bonnie Doon. Today we stopped in Jugiong having made quite a long day of it by collecting as many GCA caches as possible to take advantage of the double points. This was one of those caches and we thank all COs for placing these caches which add interest and fun to our trip. DancingDancing

Found this cache on the way to, at or on the way home from the Mega at Clearwaters. My trip to the Mega was great, found lab caches which while like gadgets are new icons to me. Found some great caches and brought back some neat ideas for new caches in Tasmania.

All done successfully! Loved the cache container Black Bunny. A bulletproof beauty! All in good nick.

Adelaide Trip Summer 2017-18. Day 10. In the rain showers on a hot day it was good to get off the road for a few minutes and fight spiders instead of divers.

We were heading north when we came reached GGundagai where several GCA caches had been published since we were last here. This cache was some distance further down the track in an area we had visited previously when looking for a cache based on the nearby memorial plaque. As there was quite a lot of fast moving traffic we appreciated the large pull off area near GZ.

Accurate coordinates lead to a quick find of a large, well camo'ed container with a nice collection of swoppable objects. It is always a pleasure to find a large sized, well stocked cache. A pity it has not had many visits as kids would love the swops.

Cache container and contents were in very good condition. The safe hide should ensure that this cache has a long life.

Thanks for the cache Black Bunny and for an enjoyable caching experience.

Last for the day and just a find for me as LuckyL10n had grab the cache on the way home from Melbourne a few days ago. Pulled up in parking area and soon had the neat container in hand. Log signed, cache replaced and it was time to head for home.

Thanks again BB....haven't stopped here for quite a while.

#GA2081 - 18:50; After a few days in Melbourne to visit the geoteen, it was time to head back up the Hume Highway for home and collect a few of the new caches as well as some which are still on the 'to do' list along this stretch of road. This one was a recent addition to the 'to do' list for the trip home and surprisingly it was also a *FTF*! A nice well stocked container which I hope sees many more visits. I have visited the nearby memorial before and look forward to collecting more caches in this series. TFTC Black Bunny Very HappyClan Cerberus
