Description

Mt Oakleigh Wolfram mine

many years ago there was a mine here, the wilderness around is truly wonderful.

the track to get to the cache has been cleared for 4 wheeler and trail bike only, you will not get a vehcile to this cache, you can drive in a high vechile about 12kms in but there is an unpassable bridge.

this is a 4-5 hour cruise ride round trip but you could do it faster, depends on experiance.

roughly 50kms round trip so take a packed lunch and enjoy the day out, some realy good fishing holes as well.

Enjoy

Start of the track is at  S41° 36.268'  E146° 8.388'

From there you can travel along Patons Road untill you come to an old quarry, best place to park your car and unload bikes, etc, from the quarry you come back 100yards give or tank and turn into the track that has been slightly washed away, you will know it when you see it. follow Patons Road to the very end and you will find the Mt Oakliegh Wolfram mine, once you start the riding there is only one way in and out.

This cache has been on our might do sometime if the opportunity arises list since it was published in February 2013. It has had only one find, shortly after publication. A chance conversation at a family gathering almost a week ago resulted in Mrs Y'stassie being offered a ride into the mine with a member of the team that maintains the track into the Mt Oakleigh Wolfram Mine on Patons Road.

We left Melrose at 9:00am and made our way to the quarry where we unloaded the ATV and begun our ride in along the private road which has public access. On the way in we could see evidence of the destruction that has occurred during recent floods. All of the old bridges on the track have been damaged and most have been totally destroyed. Locals have constructed river crossings that are navigable by most ATV's. Initially we were travelling through gum scrub but as the track got closer to the river the gums became taller and the scrub was replaced by myrtle and manfern. The river was clear and the water very cool, refreshing on a warm day, 26 degrees today. After almost two hours we reached the sandy beach below GZ. After a short search the container was located in a hollow in the tree described in the hint. The GPS was unsettled but led us to the hide.

After extracting the container from its leaf litter camo we found it full of water. The log book, in its plastic bag was saturated as were the swaps. Fortunately the day was hot so we spread the contents out in the sun and left them to dry while we explored the area. There are two adits nearby. The lower adit is very wet with a considerable water at the entrance so we did not enter this. The upper one is dry and able to be explored more easily. There is a track, a short distance from this area that leads to the Overland Track and Mt Oakleigh and from there on to Mt Ossa. We did not have sufficient time to do this walk today but maybe next time.

We had lunch in the shade under the trees but were not encouraged to stay too long as we were attacked by squadrons of large, very hungry mosquitoes. When we ventured into the sun march flies descended in dozens. When the cache contents were dry we signed the log, after Beetles x2 who had visited on Feb 24 2013 - about six weeks short of 6 years unfound. We replaced the container in the tree hollow. Hopefully it will remain dry. Then it was time for the journey out.

We made many stops on the way out to take photos, explore some pretty areas and to paddle in the river arriving back at our starting spot at 15:30.

Thanks Moeyy for a great caching experience, one we will add to our caching stories. This is a cache for those who enjoy exploring old mine sites, 4W Driving and isolated areas.

You can reach the area following the directions on the cache page. Most people access the area via ATV or mountain bike. Forestry and the owner of the property beside the first section of the track monitor the traffic into the mine site. We had to stop and remove a lot of trees from across the track, some had been cut down others had fallen. We will add some photos of our journey soon.

An afternoon's outing on the ATV to a place Mr B had ridden many times before. A quick easy find once there. Always good to get a FTF even if we did this the easy way. Thanks.

I'm surprised it's 50km round trip but my memory could be faulty - I've been in there several times in a 4WD but it was a few years ago. Next best option to motorized transport would be a mountain bike I would think.

Was present when Moeyy placed this cache....... Easiest way to start looking for this cache is to follow the gravel road that leads past the Lemonthyme Power Station into the quarry and park there. Ill get the Co-ords for the quarry when i get a free moment.
