The Bethungra Rail Spiral is a 1940s engineering feat to allow rail engines [steam] to negoiate the steep slope.On the Sydney to Melbourne linethe spiral goes through two tunnels and over the top of the hill and through a big cutting at the spur.The trip from Melbourne to Sydney is two killometers longer.This is the onlyexample of a 360 degreespiral in Australia.
