Description
Sturt Street Reserve, Southbank
In celebration of GIS Day (20th November 2013), we have stocked our cache with GIS Day goodies! :D
Captain Charles Napier Sturt (28th April 1795 - 16th June 1869) was a British explorer who wanted to be the first among his peers to stand in the centre of Australia. He led expeditions from both Sydney and Adelaide, following rivers that flowed west on his search for a great inland sea. On his mulitple trips into Australia's wild interior he survived drought and developed scurvy, discovered the Murray River and Lake Alexandrina and influenced the settlement of South Australia and it's capital, Adelaide. A significant discovery of Charles Sturt was that the Maquarie, Bogan, Castlereagh, Hume, Murrambidgee and Darling Rivers all flowed into the Murray River and out to the ocean. Unfortunatly, this was contrary to Sturt's belief that these rivers led to an inland sea.
With this in mind, we invite you to explore Melbourne and discover that Sturt Street, Kings Way and Coventry Street all flow toward this gorgeous park in Southbank. Complete with toilets, picnic tables and BBQ facilities, it is not the inland sea Sturt was looking for, but in this park we encourage you to reflect upon the significant contribution made by Charles Sturt during the period of Australian exploration. Located at the intersection of the Number 1 and Number 55 trams, this park is also within walking distance of Flinders Street Station / Federation Square.
And remember to stock your picnic basket with oranges to ensure that you do not develop scurvy duing your expedition!

Logs
Coming from Adelaide, and from the Charles Sturt Council I already knew quite a bit of Sturt's exploits. Each December I also play in a band, playing community carols in front of his old house at Grange. It is a lovely setting that his house is in.
This cache is in a lovely little setting too. A great escape from the hustle of the nearby roads, especially during peak-hour when I came here.
Cache was quickly found, and I grabbed a band in commemoration of GIS day.

Cheers
Nice back story on the cache page of this one.
TNLNSL. Thanks ArcPad Team.
I saw this pop up yesterday but I ran out of time to stop on the way home. At this time of the morning there are plenty of parks and very few muggles, although I still had to wait for a couple before I could duck into gz for a quick find.
Thanks ArcPad Team for the cache and happy GIS day.
