Description

Located in the town centre is the Rollup Tree.

As early as 1872 people 'rolled up' under a towering eucalypt tree to exchange news, collect their mail and to read advertisements posted on the tree trunk. At a meeting in 1875 an effigy of the local Member of Parliament at that time was burned under the tree. Sadly the tree caught fire and burnt down. A sculpture of the tree has been erected to replace the eucalypt. Family names of the people who lived in those times are inscribed on the leaves. The leaves on the sculpture act as wind chimes when the breeze blows.

To log this virtual, roll up and take a photo of the tree with yourself (or body part) or your team.

Congratulations youngoldfella - FTF

I noticed this cache a while ago and added it to my to-visit list. An interesting history here. I've driven past it many times. Today I had some extra time on my schedule so decided to check it out and also look at the nearby Adventure Lab waypoint. The artwork across from the tree instantly reminded me of a location in Gozo Malta and a great lasagna story. An unexpected but pleasant triggered memory. Thanks for the cache.

To be honest, this cache wasn't loaded onto my GPS and only after logging another nearby cache did I see this virtual. However I did stop and take photos (as I do of most unique things) but did not have my nametag or GPS in the photo. Doh

The thing I love about caching is the interesting stories, the extra interest and attention you take when travelling, the sight-seeing, the history, the interests of the individual CO’s, the fantastic photo opportunities and sometimes finding places that even some locals don’t know about. I, like most cachers, look for more than a mint tin or a container under a bush. I appreciate the time that most CO’s take to construct a cache and write up a comprehensive listing and to create an interesting cache. I love travelling this big land of ours. I love taking the roads less travelled seeing the sights, the amazing colours, the natural beauty. I love the diversity of the land, the different scenes in the different seasons, the fresh air, the open plains, the lofty vistas and the magnificent waters. Dancing
I love the different coffee shops I find. I love every unique thing I photograph. I enjoy the times I cache with others but I usually cache on my own. I enjoy taking my time and meandering around rather than going from one cache to the next and so on… The geocaches are a great bonus of my travels. It's amazing to see the country in the eyes of a Geocacher. Thank you for adding this virtual cache to my real-life treasure hunt. I appreciate your efforts geono. Clapping

Oh there shall never be
Something as lovely as a tree

or something like that. We were staying in Stanthorpe overnight and walked up to this tree after dinner. With the gentle breeze, it was lovely to hear the tingle of the leaves and the evening light made them look like jewels. I got Suzy to take a video and she said she would upload it later and edit this log with a link. In the meantime, here is a photo of me, the lovely Samboo Bear and the tree.

Thank you for showing us this lovely tree.

The Rollup Tree

133 Km from Home

We had loaded up Scooby Doo (Car) & the Mystery Machine (Caravan and mobile GEO HQ) and headed off for 6 days of camping and caching. Our first stop was a lavender farm not too far from Stanthorpe where we set up the Mystery Machine and headed off to do some of the local caches.
We took nothing but a photo and memories; we left nothing but footprints, $5 with the busker and a couple of empty coffee cups at the café.
Thanks for the cache geono..
Cheers

I have had this one on the radar for a few weeks now, so when Pa was about to pull the pin today I managed to convince him just one more. He was convinced and luckily we scored a park right beside the tree. A quick jump out, press the button and we were on our wzy again. Thanks geono.

Was supposed to be a cache free day but Pa had other ideas. The most important one was a Ploughmans Lunch out at the Cheese factory. I knew that would be fatal - ate too much; spent too much on cheeses etc and we were soon sidetracked into looking for caches.
Thanks to all the COs involved . We found the caches to be in good condition and all logs were signed, though in some I used SG as I often do in small caches to save space. TN but left my new PT in one of them.

This is my first cache found this year. Visiting Stanthorpe and saw that this one was in town and where we were staying was only 10 minutes away by walking. At 6.15am in the morning there were very few people around. Took photo and walked back to where I was staying. TFTC. Very Happy

Found this one quite by accident - was playing a different game and stumbled across this...unfortunately i didn't realise this was a virtual GCA cache but signed the log anyway. I pulled up my geocaching app but thought it was glitchy when it didn't show it...end game - no pic but did sign log - do i get to claim this? If yes - awesome. If no - fair call Very Happy

Out and about during the Mega and stopped off to check out the tree. Luckily I had seen the changes to the cache page a couple of days ago and saw where the tree should be. I have added a photo of me at the other lovely tree nearby.

Almost forget this one....stopped by on our first full day in town (for the Mega) and grabbed a photo of the.......well, we took a photo at GZ. Talking to the CO's later at the Mega, they confirmed we were in the right spot....so luckily all was good.

Thanks geono....

QLD Mega trip 2015 with Sol de Lune. On this almost 400km road trip we drove from Canberra to Stanthorpe caching in all the towns along the way with mostly great success. Around the Mega there were heaps of caches to be done including a few power trails. Despite the weather we got all of the planned caches done.

The Tree is missing at the moment, but the stand in object is there. Thanks.

I turned up today and while there was a market on (surprising for Good Friday) there was still no tree. I found a map showing the scupltures here, and where the tree should be is a big red cone so maybe it isn't coming back. I took a photo of me with the cone.

We believe we can log this as 'found' even tho' a Christmas tree occupies the space at this time of year. We asked a local lady walking through the Piazza and she confirmed this. We got talking and she said her whole family paid $5 each to have their names put onto the Rollup Tree leaves. And she works with the partner of the artist who made the tree. She was full of information. Actually we checked out lots of street artwork around - impressive.
Thanks for the fun geono.

I was on a big caching run from home to Northern NSW via Toowoomba and all the geocaches in between that I needed to convert to yellow smileys. Left Nanango at 0700 on 24th and arrived home at 1800 on the 25th and caught up with my good friends at the Robins Nest and crystal, whilst in their neck of the woods.

53 all together with no DNF's. Whilst in Stanthorpe I gathered this one but I did not check google earth before hand or my GPSr and I followed the Gizmo and it wanted me to park at the back of the square near the NAB car park but when I walked down the lane way I could have parked in the main street. Talked to a couple of locals and they both did not like it. Oh well. TFTC
